| Santa Monica, Calif. - A crusade against toy guns that began in 1987 is being re-launched following the elementary school shooting in Connecticut that left dozens dead. Santa Monica activist Jerry Rubin says a personalized merit award will be sent to children who write to him about why they don´t like playing with toy guns. Rubin says his anti-toy gun project used to reward children who sent in their toy guns with teddy bears in exchange, but stopped after he ran out of the 5,000 donated stuffed animals. Less than two weeks ago, 20 children and six adults were gunned down

His campaigns may have made him a familiar figure, they´ve done no good. They´ve probably done harm. Why does something this stupid receive attention.

Gee, Santa just brought my grandson a toy gun. With this toy he can have fun playing and still learn the safety rules. Rules like, dont point it at people, and dont carry a (foam) round in the chamber. He is very consciencious about the rules, and when he does mess up there is no injury because it is a toy. Or he could be like a neighbor I had some years ago who had never held a gun. I brought home a Mauser rifle I´d just bought, and the first thing he did when I showed it to him was swing it around and point it at me.

Rubin is obviously a liberal nut-case and needs to be mandatorily shipped off to a nut house.

What boy in his right mind would prefer a teddy bear over a toy gun?
Methinks the moms are behind this. Again.

How do these kids know that the teddy bears aren´t insane and will try to choke them in the middle of the night?

Sure, take the toy guns away. Yeah, plastic toys, that´s the real problem! But don´t even think about touching that Mortal Combat video game or unsupervised cable! Looks like Jerry wants another 15 minutes of fame...

Will they try to take sticks and pointer fingers away from children too? Will they continue to get all upset if a child even draws a picture of a gun in school? Forbid something and curiosity and desire grows.

If George Washington´s troops carried teddy bears instead of guns, we would all have British accents. Boys being boys and playing with guns and GI Joe is normal. I wish this feminizing of boys would stop.

Heh. I think I will send Mr. Rubin some pictures from our local paper showing kids (ages six and up, boys AND girls) with the deer they have shot. It is common practice here in East Texas for papers to print these pictures during hunting season. Lots of kids here don´t get toy guns for Christmas - they get the real thing! I was a late bloomer - didn´t get my first ´real´ gun (not counting the BB guns) when I was 10 - a bolt action .410. Got a .22 single shot Ithaca lever action when I was 12 (still have that one in my closet - my favorite gun ever!) Back then, the Boy Scouts had firearm safety training as part of the program, plus every dad taught their kids firearm safety. The first rule I learned was never point a gun at anyone, even a toy gun. I think that was drilled into me when I got my first toy gun! Second was there is no such thing as an unloaded gun. And lots more. I learned these from my father, and reinforced by Scouts and even school.

Growing up in the ´70s and early ´80s my brother & I had dozens of toy guns, cap guns, etc. A couple of favorites were an "M-16" that I had that produced the sound of automatic fire when the trigger was pulled, and my brother´s toy "FAL" which not only made the sound of automatic fire, but also shot sparks out from its muzzle!
Other friends had inoperable/plugged M1911s, Mausers, and one even had an inoperable M-1 carbine! As best I can tell, none of us grew into spree killers, and in fact most grew into lawyers, doctors, contractors, etc. that enrich their communities.
Growing up learing that guns are machines and tools whose value is priceless in the hands of good men and women, you don´t grow up as a hoplophobe (as these handwringers would prefer).
Accordingly, I´m a proud owner as an adult of more than a couple of AR-15s and at least one FAL.
I would suggest Mr. Rubin, or someone who thinks more highly about freedom, liberty, and the resistance of tyranny, give each one of these essay writers some reading as their "reward." I would suggest The Black Book of Communism: Crimes, Terror, Repression. This way they can learn how democide killed over 100 million men, women, and children just this past century alone. And one thing they almost all had in common is the governments that killed them all prohibited the keeping and bearing of arms by those whose necks they rested their boots upon.

So... violent movies, video games, TV shows, etc. don´t have a negative influence on children, but toy guns do?

Our politics have become so polarized and corrupted that a president of the United States cannot even attend an event devoted to drawing people closer to God and bridge partisan and cultural divides without being lectured about his policies. Last Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., Dr. Ben Carson, director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and a 2008 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, broke with a 61-year-old tradition and publicly disagreed with some of the president´s policies, such as "ObamaCare," taxation and the national debt.

On Tuesday Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) cited "Biblical compassion" as a reason to support the "Gang of Eight" immigration bill. Rubio told CBN that he supports the bill because “[o]ur faith has always been about compassion and it compels you to do something. "Now, we have an obligation to be responsible to our country and not do anything that hurts America but also our faith calls us to compassion. If you took compassion or the principle of compassion out of the Bible, it would be in tatters because it’s all over the place.” Mark Tooley, President of the Institute

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is really struggling to explain why he told Congress in March (see video above) that the National Security Agency does not intentionally collect any kind of data on millions of Americans. His latest take: It´s an unfair question, he said, like "When are you going to stop beating your wife?" And it seems to depend on the meaning of "collect." "I responded in what I thought was the most truthful, or least untruthful, manner by saying ´no,´" Clapper told NBC News on Sunday.

President Barack Obama said Tuesday that America “owes” it to certain illegal aliens to pass legislation providing a “pathway to citizenship.” “We owe it to America to do better,” Obama said in the East Room of the White House. “We owe it to the Dreamers to do better.” Obama then went on to cite several young people in the audience. Obama and supporters of the immigration reform legislation have called people who were taken into the United States illegally by their parents “dreamers.” Democrats previously supported the DREAM Act that would allow illegals who attend college or

The Obama administration is considering resettling thousands of refugees who left Syria during the country´s ongoing civil war to multiple towns and cities across the United States, the L.A. Times reports. A resettlement plan under discussion in Washington and other capitals is aimed at relieving pressure on Middle Eastern countries straining to support 1.6 million refugees, as well as assisting hard-hit Syrian families. (Snip) U.N. refugee officials, along with diplomats and non-governmental relief groups, are scheduled to meet in Geneva this week to discuss potential resettlement plans. Germany has already agreed to take 5,000 refugees.

Senator Barbara Boxer celebrated the rekindling of talks about gun-control legislation after a shooting at Santa Monica College last Friday. “Every single time something like this happens, I think this does give us wind at our back,” Boxer said on MSNBC over the weekend. On Friday, a gunman opened fire on the school’s campus in the state of California, killing six people, including the gunman. She said she does “worry about” the failure of the legislation after the Sandy Hook shooting last year, but knows that gun-control supporters “never give up.”

In a Gallup tracking poll released Tuesday, former-President George W. Bush currently stands with a favorability rating of 49%, compared to 46% who see the 43rd president unfavorably. Meanwhile, another Gallup poll shows President Obama with only a 47% approval rating, with 44% disapproving. If you think about it, this makes perfect sense. After all, Obama fooled everyone when he ran as the anti-Bush in 2008. Everyone thought Obama meant he would be less hawkish than his predecessor. But as we have seen, Obama apparently has no problem killing American citizens

The Obama administration was facing renewed pressure over the secrecy of its surveillance programs, as a group of US senators demanded it reveal how it interprets the laws that underpin them and foreign governments expressed growing concern. A bill, to be introduced in the Senate on Tuesday, would force the US government to disclose the opinions of a secretive surveillance court that determines the scope of the eavesdropping on Americans´ phone records and internet communications. Separately, a leading member of the Senate intelligence committee came close to saying that James Clapper,

WASHINGTON — The State Department has hired an alarming number of law-enforcement agents with criminal or checkered backgrounds because of a flawed hiring process, a stunning memo obtained by The Post reveals. The background problems are severe enough that many of the roughly 2,000 agents in State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security can play only limited roles in agency efforts to police bad conduct and prosecute wrongdoers. The problems in the bureau are the latest revelation in an exploding scandal that also involves accusations that members of former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s security detail

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) said Wednesday that the incidence of pregnancy caused by rape is "very low," prompting criticism from Democrats who said the GOP is waging a "war on women." Franks made the comment during a committee mark-up of his late-term abortion ban bill, which is expected pass the House next week. The Republican lawmaker was arguing against a Democratic amendment allowing rape and incest victims to procure abortions. As written, the bill only exempts women whose lives are in danger. "You know, the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low," Franks said.

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) made history Tuesday, becoming the first senator of the modern era to deliver a Senate floor speech entirely in Spanish as he explained his support for a bipartisan immigration bill up for consideration. Over the course of a 14-minute speech, Kaine said he wanted to use the Spanish-speaking skills he learned working in Honduras in order to explain aspects of the bill to the roughly 40 million Spanish speakers living in the United States. “El senado ha comenzado un debate histórico sobre una reforma migratoria comprensiva,” Kaine said at the start of his remarks.
