Los Angeles may ban

LOS ANGELES- Los Angeles could become the first major U.S. city to ban elephant acts in circuses if it passes a measure backers say will eventually be adopted "universally." The city council is expected to vote early in the new year on an ordinance that could force the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus either to drop its annual stop in the country´s second-largest city or pull one of its most popular acts, , The New York Times reported. Paul Koretz, the councilman who sponsored the ordinance banning elephants, predicted other big cities will follow suit

I hope they do ban elephants.
Years ago a circus came to our town, and I took my young son to watch them set up.
The handlers were beating the elephants to force them to pull the ropes to set up the big top. It was horrible the way they treated those poor animals.
My son was horrified. Time to end the practice of tormenting animals in circuses.

#2´s allegation is serious and troubling. But I´m a bit cynical and question what ´beating´ an elephant means. Is it like prodding or vicious beating.

I don´t know enough to address the poster´s issue, but I do know enough that almost everything done by governments in California is imbecilic, so I´m inclinesd to think this action is imbecilic.

Reply 4 - Posted by: Coy860, 12/26/2012 9:30:45 PM     (No. 9085026)

Let me clarify: The elephants were kicked with a heavily booted foot, and the handlers had poles with hooks on the end that were used to repeatedly hit the elephants. The beasts were forced to pull ropes and were having great difficulty pulling such a heavy load as they raised the huge tent.

Mahouts in Africa and India have been using sharp clubs to guide the elephants. Their skin is very thick and loose. I had the fun of touching one in CA one time. Very gentle, but it got restless with the music and noise and we backed off.

Glad to see LA has solved all its other problems and has time for this.

It maybe looked brutal but I can absolutely guarantee you a man can´t hurt an elephant. Prod one maybe, but not hurt one.

LA doesn´t want competition with its city council circus. That´s why it doesn´t want an animal circus in town.

I couldn´t help myself, I had to find out if the objection was the green house gases from the farts, the symbolism associated with the GOP, or something else. Circuses have utilized elephants to raise the tents for the 60 years I´ve been on the planet. Its a prime example of serendipity that one of your main draws also helps erect the tents. If I were the circus I would tell CA that they were no longer on the schedule. Tell them to go watch the governor´s project of sterilizing fruit flies in preparation for the next outbreak of fruit flies.

Interesting to note that circus elephants will soon have more rights than the unborn humans in California.
Wow.

I work behind the scenes with the circus every year when they come to town. I have never seen anyone beating an elephant.

However, when I used to spend time at a horse stable - I used to see people whip, spur and hit horses.

Maybe LA should ban stables?

The big scare seems real enough, but only the terminally unobservant would not notice that the timing of it is awfully convenient for the White House and the fans of the security state. Who would put a leash on the National Security Agency now, with all the static, chatter and high anticipation about what mayhem might (or might not) come down on the Middle East? There’s no evident link between the chatter picked up by the NSA about the big scare, and the cellphone conversations of blue-haired Lutheran grannies in Minnesota, teenage prom queens chattering about their boyfriends

On Tuesday, CBS This Morning pounced on a new study by the Center for Media and Public Affairs (CMPA) showing that President Obama is now the butt of more jokes on late night TV than any other politician. "Since his re-election, late-night comedians have aimed 300 jokes at the President," CBS´s Jeff Pegues announced. "That´s only 100 fewer than all of those directed at Republican politicians combined." But the real news is how, in two presidential campaigns and in his first term as President, Obama has largely evaded the harsh barbs of TV´s comics.

On Monday morning, a Republican National Committee spokeswoman revealed that a major announcement was coming about the future of the Republican presidential primary process. In that moment, full of promise, the future of the Republican Party looked bright. Perhaps the GOP had finally gotten serious about the profoundly broken methods by which it selects its nominee to become the most powerful person on the planet. But that hopeful moment was only a mirage. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus declared later that day that his announcement was merely a public relations ploy aimed at antagonizing an old foe –

WASHINGTON —In a few days, President Obama and his family will arrive on Martha’s Vineyard for a family vacation. For centuries, Martha’s Vineyard and the town of Oak Bluffs in particular has been the epicenter of black elitism. It has been said, “it does not matter where America’s wealthy black families winter … they summer in Martha’s Vineyard.” The island has often been called self-segregated, with most African-Americans residing in Oak Bluffs. Its harbor drew freed slaves, laborers and sailors in the 18th century, and white locals sold them land. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, middle-class blacks

For nearly a year, we have had no answer to why the administration lied about Benghazi — why it told the world, not to mention the parents of our murdered SEALs at the funeral of their sons, that the cause of that fatal conflagration was an anti-Islamic video no one saw, when the various arms of our executive branch (White House, State and intelligence) already knew, or strongly suspected, it was a terror attack orchestrated by al-Qaeda affiliates. You only have to read the now infamous talking points to know that. That this lie was deeply immoral is obvious.
