Senators Returning With Little
Urgency as Fiscal Clock Ticks

New York Times, by Jonathan Weisman

Original Article

Washington - President Obama and members of the Senate are set to return to Washington on Thursday to make a last-ditch effort at a deal to avert more than a half-trillion dollars in automatic tax increases and spending cuts just five days before they start kicking in. Even with so much at stake, there appeared to be little sense of urgency. Senate aides say most senators are not likely to be back on Capitol Hill before Thursday evening. And while the House may technically be in session, Republican leaders told members last week they would be given a 48-hour notice before they should return,

Comments:
This could get interesting, if somehow, Boehner had a sudden bout of stomach flu, or just fell and had a concussion while getting up from a tanning bed. The GOP needs to go at slow speed and not let 0bama lead them anywhere but over HIS "fiscal cliff." Vote "Present," please, if there is one.

Can someone who really knows inform the rest of us if the president or the members of the House and/or Senate are monetarily subject to ANY of the results of the so called ´fiscal cliff´...do they have to pay, considering the fact that practically ALL of them are MILLIONAIRES or have they as usual EXEMPTED themselves from any and all penalties, responsibilities, and or effects of the law?

Boehner will walk in and sit down with Obama. Obama will then reach under the table and pull out a dossier on Boehner."Hey John,I wonder what your wife and kids would say if they saw this?"

Boehner replies "Did you say you need two trillion or 3 trillion?"

Those who are on the dole have nothing to lose nor do the extremely wealthy. The folks who are going to be squeezed are the middle class.
What many people do not realize if all the money the multimillionaires and billionaires was totaled, and was confiscated by the BHO government, the amount taken wouldn´t even pay for a few weeks or less of running the country.
This cry of BHO´s to TAX the RICH is a bunch of baloney. If he gathered all the wealth as I said before it wouldn´t last more than a couple of weeks. Its effect on the debt is like a mousquito biting and elephant.

Malaysian authorities say new satellite images from France have identified about 122 objects floating in the Indian Ocean, about 2557km from Perth. Minister of Defence and Acting Minister of Transport Hishammuddin Hussein said the satellite images were taken on March 23. He said objects ranged from 1m to 23m in length, and some were brightly coloured. Malaysian authorities say they have received new satellite images of a possible debris field. Mr Hussein said they received new satellite images from France yesterday. “Australia, China and France have already released satellite images showing objects that may be related to MH370,”

The Obama administration is prepared to give prospective Obamacare enrollees another half-month to signup for insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act website, healthcare.gov, treating the law´s March 31 regulatory deadline as a formality for Americans who claim they tried in earnest to sign up in time. During a March 12 congressional hearing, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told Texas Republican Rep. Kevin Brady that there would be no such extensions. ´Are you going to delay the open enrollment beyond March 31?´ Brady asked. ´No, sir,´ she replied. The Obama administration will grant extra time to Americans who say they are unable to enroll in health care plans through the federal insurance marketplace by the deadline set for the end of March, the Washington Post reported late Tuesday. All consumers who have begun to apply for coverage on HealthCare.gov, but who do not finish by Monday, will have until about mid-April to ask for an extension, federal officials confirmed to the newspaper. The paper reports that users will have a chance to check a box on the website indicating they tried to enroll before the deadline, though the government will not try to determine whether the person

Virtual currencies like bitcoin will be taxed like property — not currency, the Internal Revenue Service said Tuesday. The IRS says bitcoin is not legal tender. You can´t use it to pay your taxes. However, if you receive wages in bitcoin, you have to pay taxes on it just like you would if you got paid in dollars. Or if you got paid in chickens. The IRS issued a series of 16 questions and answers Tuesday to clarify the tax treatment of virtual currencies like bitcoin. In general, the IRS says it will apply the same rules that govern other barter transactions. If you receive wages in bitcoin, they would be taxed at their fair market value at the time you were

Ralph Hall is the oldest person to sit in the House of Representatives in American history. The Texas Republican, who was born in the Harding Adminstration, was first elected to Congress in 1980 and has represented Northeast Texas´s 4th Congressionial District ever since. But his time on Capitol Hill may come to an abrupt end in Texas´s primary runoff on May 27th as conservatives sense blood in the water. It´s never a good sign for an incumbent to be held beneath 50% and forced into a runoff but that´s just what happened to Hall in his primary earlier this month. Income growth was slower in 2013 than the year before in every state, according to new federal data. But don’t worry, it was all just the result of a year-old political fight. (Snip) But compare each state to its own recent record, and you’ll see incomes decelerating. Why? Well, the “fiscal cliff” — the end-of-2012 fight over tax hikes and spending cuts. One of those expiring cuts, the payroll tax cut, was putting money into the hands of Americans. Once it expired, that money started flowing back to the government. Also, the comparison isn’t quite fair. Income growth in 2012 was artificially higher due to the fiscal cliff because of concerns

Judging by the recent royal temper tantrums and the parade of op-eds suggesting ways to soothe the Saudis, President Obama’s trip to Saudi Arabia on Thursday is shaping up as one of the more awkward diplomatic encounters this side of the “Red Wedding.” Saudi officials have made no secret of their displeasure over the United States’ support of democratic change in Egypt and across the region, its refusal to leap into a Syrian quagmire and its role in the nuclear negotiations with Iran. The Saudis have hardly been assuaged by U.S. deference to Riyadh on their human rights abuses or passive acceptance of Saudi support for Egypt’s

Not too long ago, the Greens of Oklahoma City were law-abiding people running an arts-and-crafts chain called Hobby Lobby. They weren’t disturbing the peace, or denying anyone his or her rights. They were minding their own business — quite successfully and in keeping with their Christian faith. The roughly 600 Hobby Lobby stores stock Christian products, close on Sundays, and play Christian music. Then one day Uncle Sam showed up to make an offer that the Greens couldn’t refuse — literally. As part of Obamacare, federal law demands that the chain cover contraceptives that the Greens consider abortifacients.

A pair of potentially catastrophic cases will be argued before the Supreme Court on Tuesday. These cases are brought by privately held, for-profit corporations that are arguing their religious convictions should preclude them from offering employees the health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers don’t want to allow their employees’ insurance to cover some forms of birth control because, contrary to medicaland scientific evidence, they believe some birth control causes abortions. A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the sweeping acceptance of gay marriage in recent years is owed in large part to Christianity. Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,
