#1 is correct. The "nut free school" is a common theme as well as an oxymoron. It doesn´t work, makes the kids and parents annoyed at the parents who demanded it, and does a disservice to the child with the allergy who must ... I´ll say that again - MUST ... learn to live in a world full of danger.

I have a friend who is very allergic to a common type of food and he´s actually had experiences where he was certain he wasn´t going to make it to the hospital in time. I sympathize. But he´d be dead by now if he had been given the belief that the world would cater to his allergy and that he was "safe" anywhere.

As a parent who has kids in school, and who thankfully has no children with life threatening allergies, I have NO problem with a cafeteria banning something like peanuts so that a kid who is deathly allergic to them can attend.

If my kid not eating peanut butter is the absolute ONLY thing I had to worry about with my kid in public school, then it would be a cake walk.

Honestly. It´s not that big of a sacrifice for me or my kid.

Re #7, don´t forget that it isn´t just the cafeteria. Other kids in the school are not permitted to take any peanut or other nut-containing item in their bag lunches.

I don´t think it is surprising that these kids might not be the most popular in the school. But these days a simple tease or funny look is called "bullying", so it´s hard to determine just what is going on.

I imagine the nut-allergic kids are using their having been "bullied" as a means of trying to get their mothers to ease up? Kids don´t want to be "different" for any reason.

PS. The allergens mentioned cover a rather broad spectrum. I have never known a lactose-intolerant kid to have a special dispensation from a school. They need to learn to avoid the thing that upsets them. And upset can range from gastric distress to a headache to a life-threatening anaphylactic shock. Some proportional thinking is required.

#7, having raised children prior to these "nut-free" zones, I ask does this just mean no PB&J or does it mean no trail mix, no peanut M&Ms, no Snicker bars, and on and on? I would hate to have to think of that every morning while packing my child´s lunch.

"Bullying" is a political crime. It would be interesting to see how those interested in the subject attempt to define it. It would seem to mean whatever the user chooses it to mean. There is something comical about this revenge of the nerds crusade against bullying. The softness and rottenness at the cultural core it represents, however, is not funny. It is a manifestation of decline. America is well on the way to becoming a nation of self-righteous, inexplicably entitled sissies afraid to eat a peach. This has happened before. It has been claimed that Rome´s final defeat of Carthage in 146 B.C. deprived it of the adversary it required to sustain the virtues upon which the republic was founded, and that decline thereafter was inevitable. Whether that is so or not, a society that devotes its attention to bullying among schoolchildren has clearly had too much, too easy, for too long. It has begun to lose its nerve and the fountainheads of its virtue from sheer lack of real adversity.

In all the time I went to school, for years, one girl I knew had an allergy to milk and some dairy. Solution? She didn´t drink it.

Do people know that there are therapy programs at an allergist that will build up immunities to many allergies?

Nearly half of Americans are bullied by the person who is called pResident. Get used to it, bullying can make you stronger if you reject the people doing the bullying. We have become a nation of complainers/of wimps.

I had food allergies....and I was bullied.

One had nothing to do with the other. I was bullied until I stood up for myself and beat the crap out of my antagonist. Kids will always pick on those whom they perceive as week.
