If public education is allowed to survive, all efforts to resuscitate the inert husk of modern civilization will fail. It is time to unravel the most wasteful and destructive entitlement program of all. Cancer cells do not divide into healthy cells. A corrupted, power-intoxicated political class will not willingly raise a freedom-loving, self-reliant populace. Governments must no longer be allowed to pre-determine their nations´ fates, by mass producing the populace that serves their interests.
Allowing the "general welfare" phrase in the Constitution to legitimize things like public schooling and Social Security is the mother of all cave-ins the Right grants to the Left, pulling the floor out from under its own feet and nullifying any ideological advantage it would have against Marxism-creep. Since when do free people allow the State to "educate" their children? Answer: they don´t.
If you want to see innovation, a return to serious standards, a choice of educational paths and methods, a committed group of parents, a supportive community, high academic standards, and intellectually serious educators engaged in honest and productive debate, stop by your local homeschool convention. Sure, some people don´t do it as well as others, but as the author says, that´s an isolated problem rather than a systemic one. Given a choice, a randomly chosen homeschool parent would be far more likely to provide a quality education to your child than the public education system.
Excellent article, worth the cup-of-coffee length reading time.
FTA: [I]f Barack Obama wishes to send his children to Bill and Bernardine´s house, he is free to do so. The problem is that in a public education system, you are not free *not* to do so with your children.
This is why some countries have made home schooling illegal to the point that the State could take your children from you. The Bible says to train your child in the way that they should go and they will never depart from it. Notice there are no ages mentioned here. I say that that is an admonition to home school for the life long benefit of your child and not send your kids to be brainwashed at a public school.
A good beginning would be to abolish Jimmy Carter´s Department of Education and return control to the individual States. Once the pride of the nation, the Public Education System has steadily deteriorated since control was given over to the Feds. In my State, the Feds provide about 11% of the funds for PE, but insist on 100% control over most aspects of the system. In addition to the therapeutic effect on education, abolishing the Dept of Ed would save billions--a beginning to dissolving the debt.
Reply 8 has put his finger on the source of the problem. It was the establishment of a Federal department - the Dept. of Education.
Before that, the system this writer advocates, whether he knows it or not, was in effect and worked well for 100 years. The states were in charge of education. I saw it at work and count myself lucky to be old enough to have received that education. t. One of my children, now in his fifties, remembers being vaguely aware that an old system was passing away. His teacher was old school and in defiance of orders taught her to read by the phonics method. His older brother got phonics legitimately. I was amazed at how much he could read in only six weeks. Their sister was stuck with look/say. That she ever learned to read at all is a confirmation of her intelligence. Many did not. Remember, Johnnyt can´t read?
Can a federal department ever be abolished? Ronald Reagan said they were the closest thing to immortality we would ever see. And, think of all the unemployment!
The ruling libertards claim the "little people" can´t be trusted with their own money, because they can´t grasp complex issues like personal finance. That´s an airtight indictment of public education not doing its job. One thing that all Americans should be, once through primary education, is competent with money, not experts on diversity, and equalization of outcomes, aka socialism, American Idol, etc.
Interesting piece and comments. As a "teacher educator" who sees the rot from the inside, I have a few reactions. One is that until local school boards wean themselves from the state and federal teats flowing with progressive milk money, things will keep getting worse.
Solutions? If you think our Republic is already lost, why bother? If you think there is still a chance -homeschooling is great and getting better. It will preserve a remnant of Constitutional Americans.
Beyond that we have to think outside the box, become more competitive with the public schools. For jr./sr. high, skilled trade organizations might offer training programs for plumbers, mechanics etc. that bypass BOCES. Give young kids on-the-job training and require 2 or 3 hours of schooling for essential skills. Unions have helped demolish apprenticeship programs; this might be time to bring them back. Good paying life-long jobs with little or no college debt sounds like a winner to me.
continued: For those who cannot see their way out of public schools, talk to teachers. Acknowledge the hard work so many of them do as they are held accountable for the joyless and impossible - to get every student to score above average on a standardized test. Organize other parents to keep children home on test days.
Gift your school libraries and your teacher´s classroom libraries with traditional American folks stories and music. When they ask for community members to read to children, bring in Paul Bunyan (remember him?) or Froggy went a Courtin´, or a beautiful picture book with words to our patriotic songs.
Many teachers are Democrats by choice. They think that Republicans and Conservatives don´t care about children. Give them reasons to reconsider that myth. Establish strong, helpful relationships and then, when you see content that is unacceptable or one-sided, you can have a conversation that begins with respect.
These are very minor suggestions - there is much more to be done on the national stage in terms of changing the conversation on education. We need strident outspoken leaders who speak to the underlying theoretical issues, like Jonescu does in this article. But for individual moms and dads, remember that most elementary teachers want children to behave, to read well and to love reading. The system has failed them, too. Let´s get them on our side. Ramona (the Pest)
NEO - the Network for Educational Opportunity - a coalition of private, church-related, and homeschoolers with a PLAN to free the next generation from the handcuffs of the failing public school establishment.
A good site to visit for workable strategies to get our kids out of the public schools.
The federal government has no business being involved in education at any level. While I support the concept of K12 being financed and administered at the local school board level, realistically I think privatizing is the way to go. As long as government is involved, nothing will change. We sacrificed material things to get our kids out of the government system. Homeschool or private school. Your kids are worth it.
Wait until that cryin´ Arnie Duncan plants a Race to the Top flag in your community. Funds will go to a regional school board, taking everything out of the hands of the parents, and local school boards. Of course the money will be redistributed to inner-city schools, your tax dollars flowing to already failing institutions. Not a pretty picture, looks like Detroit meets the local school district, failure ensues.
Before "if you like your plan, you can keep it," the Obama left made a whole spate of false promises in the realm of sexuality. It´s worth connecting the dots between the folly of ObamaCare, an issue for which I wasn´t personally on the front lines, and the sweeping folly of sexual radicalism, an issue for which I was. In the rhetorical battlefield over sex and sexuality, the left rehearsed and perfected public-opinion warfare. These seasoned tactics led to the triumphal hubris of ObamaCare and the collateral damage of its inexorable implosion. Pick your antique allegory of overconfidence: the Tower of Babel,
"I´ve written two books," Senator Barack Obama told a crowd of teachers in Virginia on the campaign trial in July of 2008. The teachers applauded. "I actually wrote them myself," he added with a wink and a nod, and now the teachers exploded in laughter. They got the joke: Republicans were too stupid to write their books. Although few fussed over Obama´s second book, a first-person memoir/ policy brief published in 2006 titled The Audacity of Hope, Obama´s 1995 memoir Dreams from My Father had emerged as the sacred text in the cult of Obama "There is no underestimating the importance
Elect a Chicago community organizer (twice) as your president and you should not be surprised to find that all he is capable of is spewing propaganda and dividing us by personalizing attacks on those who oppose his grandiose, wildly impractical efforts at reshaping our lives to suit his sophomoric view of the good life. As the obvious failure of ObamaCare has become evident to all but his most blinkered cultists, Obama fell back this week on upping the propagandizing and deflecting attention from his failures with even more lies. His organizing arm OFA (Organizing for America) urged supporters to use this year´s
Those who wrote the PPACA legislation were much more brilliant than most conservatives have given them credit for. They have hidden a landmine in the way it all works that will ensure an eventual takeover of the entire health care industry by the government. Let me first clarify my professional interest. I have been a vendor of software and services to both insurance companies and providers, and therefore have a deep understanding of the health care industry and what the ACA will do to it. I do not work for any insurance companies or medical providers, nor do I own stock
MONTICELLO, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A video recording shows the mayor of the Sullivan County municipality of Monticello in a heated confrontation after being arrested by his own police officers. (Snip) He was taken into custody after showing up to take a look at a serious car accident on Main Street. A volunteer firefighter noticed the mayor looked drunk, according to police, and notified law enforcement. Jenkins was arrested on the spot. In a video recorded at his own police headquarters, a man identified as Jenkins was shown seated in a chair with one hand handcuffed to a wall. During the first
If you think ObamaCare is bad, just wait till you hear the new "peace" agreement that is due to be imposed on the Middle East over the coming weeks. Even if it works, a giant if, it will make the world much more dangerous: 1. Iran will have nuclear weapons, or it will be balanced right on the edge -- within one month or less to make nukes. 2. Saudi Arabia and Egypt will go nuclear, to balance Iran. 3. America´s role as a guarantor of peace will be blown, crushed by Obama´s betrayal of Israel and the Arabs. America´s nuclear umbrella, which
How fitting that abortion zealot and self-proclaimed Marxist Gloria Steinem received the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Wednesday from Barack Hussein Obama. The male-bashing, anti-family, anti-American Steinem beamed as the guy who voted three times against a partial-birth abortion ban while in the Illinois state Senate placed the medal around her neck. What exactly is the meritorious contribution Steinem has made to our national interests that would warrant such an honor? Ever since the radical feminist attended an "abortion speak-out" in 1969 hosted by the radical man-hating group Redstockings, she was "instantly committed" to the abortion movement.
If no one else, WND, the New York Post, and now Fox News have started paying serious attention to an urban pastime known as "the knockout game" or occasionally as "polar bear hunting," a phenomenon that has caused at least seven deaths and countless serious injuries. The "polar bear" refers to the invariably white or at least non-black victim of a hunt by a young black male, usually one of a pack of the same. The hunters tend to prey on those who seem vulnerable. This includes old people, women, children, and, most often, clueless male liberals-- like the Pittsburgh teacher
With the "fumbled" rollout of Obamacare giving us all a 24/7 inundation of administration statements such as: "This is the law of the land, it was voted on by Congress, upheld by the Supreme Court and will be enforced by a rabid pack of gun-toting IRS agents." Alright, I confess, I made up that last bit about the gun-toting IRS agents. Neither Obama nor his talking sock puppets ever said that -- at least out loud. Within a month of these spirited defenses of an indefensible law, the White House did what became an impression of the "Saturday Night Live" character, the
On the night of July 17, 1996, President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary attended a gala for the Women´s Leadership Forum of the Democratic National Committee at the Sheraton Washington Hotel. We know this from the 11,000 pages of Hillary´s schedule as first lady that the National Archives released in 2008. At 8:35 that evening, after working the rope line, the Clintons left the Sheraton by presidential motorcade and headed back to the White House where they arrived at 8:45. A 8:31 that same evening, two FAA veterans at the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center observed a target arching
Derelict: (´der??likt/) neglectful of duty, delinquent; a person guilty of neglect of duty; a bum. SYNONYM-see Obama, Barack. A thought experiment can be useful to explain why America is in a mess. Let´s take Barack Obama at his word -- a stretch certainly for anyone who would lie about his own mother´s death to score partisan points will lie about...well, anything. But let´s put the most positive spin on what President Obama has been conveying to his fellow Americans. One can try to be optimistic even in these perilous times -- it is one of the great traits of being
What will the United States of America be like after Barack Obama leaves the presidency on January 20, 2017 (assuming he does leave)? Five days before the 2008 election, Obama declared he would "fundamentally transform" America. Obama has done much to fulfill that promise since January 20, 2009. If he completes his agenda, the U.S. will be very much like a European-style welfare state. Obama is not personally responsible for some of the changes in American society that have facilitated the welfare state´s growth. Charles Murray (Coming Apart), Bill Cosby and Alvin Poussaint (Come On People), and Nicholas Eberstadt (A Nation of
I have never been much of a conspiracy theorist. For me it was always Oswald by himself from the Texas School Book Depository and nothing in the intervening fifty years has disabused me of this notion. For the most part, I’m an Occam’s Razor kind of guy — the most obvious explanation is likely to be true. (Snip) To put it bluntly, Occam’s Razor has moved. Things that were once possibilities now seem almost certainties to me. Principal among those is that Obama’s academic records are perpetually unavailable for a reason — and that reason is most likely that they reveal
Last summer on his $100 million family tour of Africa, Barack Obama hoped for a priceless photo op with Nelson Mandela, the ailing freedom pioneer who went from prison cell to the presidency of South Africa. Mandela´s family suggested that wouldn’t happen. So, the Obamas did a photo op in Mandela´s former prison cell. Which Obama’s White House quickly tweeted upon word of the icon´s passing at 95. [Skip] But Obama was also caught staring at television coverage of Mandela’s passing, which became Obama’s Photo of the Day.
Hardly a week goes by without Hillary Clinton receiving another award. Last month she was named a “Global Champion” by the International Medical Corps, received the American Patriot Award at the National Defense University Foundation and the Hermandad Award from the Mexican American Leadership Initiative. [Snip] At this rate, if a bunch of elderly left-wing Swedes toss her the Nobel Peace Prize early on, the way they did to Obama, it will barely rate mention among all the other glittering trophies that have been bestowed on a woman whose only actual accomplishment was being married to a crooked governor with
Speaker John Boehner said his party should support gay Republican congressional candidates and urged his colleagues to “be a little more sensitive” when running against women. “Some of our members just aren’t as sensitive as they ought to be,” Boehner said. When asked if he thinks his party should support gay candidates, Boehner simply said: “I do.”
In February, the Bush family’s personal emails were hacked by Guccifer, a hacker who uncovered photographs of former President George H. W. Bush in a hospital bed and George W. Bush’s oil paintings in the process. It seems Guccifer has struck again, this time targeting former President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Library. The hacker has reportedly uncovered doodles of Clinton drawing on what were, at the time, classified documents. Among the doodles is apparently a picture of a penis. The document uncovered is a briefing of the strategic measures the United States could take prior Clinton’s decision to intervene in
Denver - A baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex ceremony must serve gay couples despite his religious beliefs or face fines, a judge said Friday. The order from administrative law judge Robert N. Spencer said Masterpiece Cakeshop in suburban Denver discriminated against a couple "because of their sexual orientation by refusing to sell them a wedding cake for their same-sex marriage." The order says the cake-maker must "cease and desist from discriminating" against gay couples. Although the judge did not impose fines in this case, the business will face penalties if it continues to turn away gay
Amid an array of “knock-out” attacks against a number of Jews in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, a city councilwoman pointed to the success of the Jewish community as triggering the aggression. Councilwoman-elect Laurie Cumbo emphasized that while she “admire[s] the Jewish community immensely” for its work ethic, black teens may see it differently. “While I personally regard this level of tenacity, I also recognize that for others, the accomplishments of the Jewish community triggers feelings of resentment, and a sense that Jewish success is not also their success,” Cumbo, who was recently elected, wrote in a letter. Chief among the issues
On Tuesday, The Boston Globe reported that Onyango “Omar” Obama, uncle to President Obama, says that his famous nephew stayed with him while a student at Harvard Law School in the 80s, in contradiction to The White House’s contention that the two had never met. At Thursday’s White House daily briefing, Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed that the President had, in fact, briefly stayed with “his father’s half-brother,” as Carney described Omar Obama, and that no one had actually asked the President about it when the White House initially commented. The 69 year-old Omar Obama has been facing deportation back
Former President Bill Clinton shared an anecdote regarding Nelson Mandela and the aftermath of his impeachment Friday on CNN. Clinton revealed shortly after the “impeachment business” finished on Capitol Hill, Rep. Henry Hyde (R., Ill.) who managed the impeachment trial requested a meeting at the White House. The former president granted the meeting out of lessons of humility and forgiveness he learned from Mandela, he said: BILL CLINTON: I remember one day, oh, about a month after the whole impeachment business was over, Henry Hyde, who had run the whole show, unbelievably enough, maybe a few months after, it was
The world premiere of the “Ballad for Trayvon Martin for Orchestra and Jazz Quartet” is set for tonight. Princeton University’s director of its jazz-studies program composed the work in honor of the Florida teen. Anthony D. J. Branker told the Star-Ledger that the piece is intended to “be a form of healing” after Martin’s death and the controversial court case that followed it. The ballad, which will be performed by the university’s official orchestra and jazz ensemble, is intended to be a tribute to victims of racial violence, Branker explained. He hopes that the performance will be “one that speaks to
WASHINGTON – A fourth straight month of solid hiring cut the U.S. unemployment rate to a five-year low of 7 percent in November, an encouraging sign for the economy. The Labor Department says employers added 203,000 jobs, nearly matching October´s revised gain of 200,000. The job gains helped lower the unemployment rate from 7.3 percent in October. The strengthening job market is likely to fuel speculation that the Federal Reserve may start to scale back its bond purchases when it meets later this month. The economy has now generated an average of 204,000 jobs from August through November. That´s up
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has high praise for potential 2016 contenders Vice President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “I think Joe Biden will go down in history as one of the best vice presidents ever, and he has been with me, at my side, in every tough decision that I’ve made,” Obama told MSNBC in an interview Thursday held at American University. “Hillary, I think, will go down in history as one of the finest secretaries of state we’ve ever had, and helped to transition us away from a deep hole that we were in,
