Cardinal Gibbons athletes
offer heartfelt gift

Luke Raymond cannot wrap up one of his most heartfelt gifts this Christmas. His offering is much too personal. Raymond and about 30 of his classmates at Cardinal Gibbons High offer a different kind of gift – support for those grieving the loss of loved ones. As members of the school’s Pallbearers Society, the group assembles several times each year to help carry the coffins of people they have never met. They generally know almost nothing about the deceased. Gibbons is a nonboarding parochial school, but pallbearers are available to any family in the community,

What a touching story - unusual from the N&O!!! Have been in this area for 25 years and this is the first I have heard of this service. Also, I can see how this service is needed and how much it is appreciated. God Bless these young men!

This is a noble and meaningful service. God bless these kids.

When my mother died, we were newcomers in the parish, didn´t know anybody, and were about 1,000 miles from Mom´s hometown: really didn´t expect anybody at the funeral. I just humbly mentioned to the pastor that Mom would´ve appreciated something like a "Kyrie": it was the tradition of her earlier years.

I was so grateful when the choir came and did the main parts of the Mass in Latin, and the associate pastor sang "Panis Angelicus." Some young guys from the State University Catholic students group joined the ushers in carrying the coffin.

Just inexpressibly beautiful and consoling. Or in the words of the Mass: right and just.

When my brother died in the south and was brought back north for burial, (alongside his wife), the kids had to pay paulbearers. Sad but true. There was no family or friends left around there to help.

The Obama administration is dropping some new hints about how it has moved money around to fund Obamacare without Congress — but not nearly enough to put the controversy to rest.Forced to reveal more details under a provision tucked in this year’s bipartisan budget deal, the Department of Health and Human Services declared Friday how it used Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’s authority to move about $1.6 billion in departmental funds around last year — the Cabinet secretary’s version of looking for change under the couch cushions and hitting the jackpot. But HHS didn’t say exactly how it spent the money, and

Fertility is the missing chapter in sex education. Sobering facts about women’s declining fertility after their 20s are being withheld from ambitious young women, who are propelled along a career track devised for men. The refusal by public schools’ sex-education programs to acknowledge gender differences is betraying both boys and girls. The genders should be separated for sex counseling. It is absurd to avoid the harsh reality that boys have less to lose from casual serial sex than do girls, who risk pregnancy and whose future fertility can be compromised by disease. Boys need lessons in basic ethics and moral reasoning
