| LOS ANGELES — Charles Durning, the two-time Oscar nominee who was dubbed the king of the character actors for his skill in playing everything from a Nazi colonel to the pope, died Monday at his home in New York City. He was 89. Durning’s longtime agent and friend Judith Moss told The Associated Press that he died Monday of natural causes in his home in the borough of Manhattan. Although he portrayed everyone from blustery public officials to comic foils to put-upon everymen, Durning may be best remembered by movie audiences for his Oscar-nominated, over-the-top role

Charles Durning was a great actor. His role as Governor in "O Brother where Art thou," was brilliant. However, I think his best role was as a soldier on Omaha Beach June 6, 1944.

Ironic that this man´s life is much more interesting, amazing and heroic than almost any role he played. I am pretty sure most of today´s actors simply could not imagine the life this man had.

That was also one of my favorite episodes of NCIS #16. Especially when Gibbs ´schooled´ those MP´s without saying a word. He just pulled back Durning´s jacket and let the medal speak for itself. I did not realize that Charles Durning was an actual war hero though. Makes this episode even more special.

You could tell as he was going through the story line..that it was real for him and his portrayal of a haunted man was perfection. May you rest in peace Sir, for you have served your country well...

Durning didn´t talk about his militay service, but Burt Reynolds discussed Durnings service on an episode of "Dinner for Five".
From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Durning):
´Reynolds revealed that Durning was in a group of gliders who overshot their landing zone and that he had to fight alone all the way back to the beach. Reynolds also stated that his own father was there fighting about 15 yards away and that Durning was probably the most decorated veteran (then) still alive from World War II. (Snip) Durning was wounded by a German “S” Mine [a.k.a "Bouncing Betty"] on June 15, 1944 at Les Mare des Mares, France. He was transported to the 24th Evacuation Hospital. By June 17 he was back in England at the 217th General Hospital. Although severely wounded by shrapnel in the left and right thighs, the right hand, the frontal region of the head, and the anterior left chest wall, Durning recovered quickly and was determined to be fit for duty on December 6, 1944. He arrived back at the front in time to take part in the Battle of the Bulge, the German counter-offensive through the Ardennes Forest of Belgium and Luxembourg in December 1944. After being wounded again, this time in the chest, Durning was repatriated to the United States. He remained in Army hospitals to receive treatment for wounds until being discharged with the rank of Private First Class on January 30, 1946.´
A real hero - Rest in Peace.

From IMDB: Was one of a few survivors to the infamous massacre of American POWs by German SS troops at Malmedy, Belgium, during World War II.
The surrendering engineering battalion, captured behind enemy lines when the main American forces retreated, were gathered together and brought to a large field. As the German guards backed away from the prisoners, machine guns that were hidden in trucks opened fire on them.
Approximately 88 US soldiers died, a good number of them by a single shot at close range through the head, indicating that those who survived the initial volley were subsequently executed.
Only about 20 of the group of approximately 100 managed to escape the massacre and make their way to American lines.

WASHINGTON— Two Miami police officers were injured Wednesday while participating in President Barack Obama´s motorcade in Florida, police said. Neither of the injuries was life-threatening. The Miami Police Department said Sgt. Rufus Devane III, 42, and Sgt. Santiago Cruz, 49, were traveling on Interstate 95 when they were involved in a crash while approaching an onramp. A preliminary investigation indicated an abandoned vehicle on the shoulder of the road may have contributed to the crash, though the investigation is not complete, police said. After Barack Obama was elected to his first term as President but before he took the oath of office, Vice-President Dick Cheney gave an exit interview to Rush Limbaugh. Under George W. Bush, Cheney was the architect, along with his legal counsel, David Addington, of a dramatic expansion of executive authority—a power grab that Obama criticized, fiercely, on the campaign trail, and promised to “reverse.” But when Limbaugh inquired about this criticism Cheney swatted it aside, saying, “My guess is that, once they get here and they’re faced with the same problems we deal with every

President Barack Obama traveled to Massachusetts Wednesday to deliver a campaign speech in defense of his own record, with Senate candidate Rep. Ed Markey along for the ride. Obama took shots at his familiar foils – the Republican House, Washington gridlock and obstruction – and took credit for advances on the economy, the environment and health care since taking office. And the Roxbury Crossing crowd, ostensibly gathered to support Markey’s Senate bid against Republican Gabriel Gomez, chanted the familiar O-ba-ma in response.

Former Alabama Governor George Wallace was many things: segregationist, lawyer, Methodist. But one thing he most certainly was not: a Republican. But during a segment of last night’s All In on MSNBC, a chyron mistakenly identified the well-known racist governor as a member of the GOP, despite his affiliation with the Democratic Party of that era. While making the case that Wallace was the clear villain during the civil rights movement for his actions in blocking black students from registering at desegregated public schools, host Chris Hayes noted that, at the time, many believed it was not clear who was

For the first time in over nine months, Gallup´s tracking poll has President Obama´s job approval rating sinking to 45%. The last time that happened was back in September of 2012. Moreover, the president´s disapproval rating has climbed to 47%, meaning he is upside down. The last time that happened was nearly as long ago. Another reliable way to tell if Obama´s job approval ratings are sinking is when the media stops talking about it -- which is exactly what we are experiencing now. The media is avoiding talk of Obama´s falling poll numbers like the plague.

A massive line of fierce storms forecast to wallop the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic on Wednesday and Thursday has meteorologists warning about the possibility of a derecho. So what exactly is a derecho, and why is it so dangerous? A derecho is a widespread, long-lived wind storm associated with a band or shelf of rapidly moving thunderstorms. By definition, a derecho has to be at least 240 miles long and have winds of at least 58 miles per hour or greater. However, meteorologist Howard Bernstein says many classic derechos have winds that can top 100 miles per hour, causing

Meanwhile, another Gallup poll shows President Obama with only a 47% approval rating, with 44% disapproving. If you think about it, this makes perfect sense. Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) said Wednesday that the incidence of pregnancy caused by rape is "very low," prompting criticism from Democrats who said the GOP is waging a "war on women." Franks made the comment during a committee mark-up of his late-term abortion ban bill, which is expected pass the House next week. The Republican lawmaker was arguing against a Democratic amendment allowing rape and incest victims to procure abortions. As written, the bill only exempts women whose lives are in danger.
