What a beautiful article. Thank you for posting it and to the man who wrote it. I found myself in the listing and loved ones. My son-in-law wrote that their family has recovered from the flu, and it was good to hear the sound of laughter in their home again. This Christmas, especially, seems less than perfect for so many people, but may we all find some reason for laughter today. Even if there is no laughter, may there be the joy of knowing the Lord Jesus Christ who said He would never leave us nor forsake us.

One more: For the clergy. I´m grateful for the priest at Mass who is there for me (and the rest of the congregation). I don´t know what they do after the services but I hope they have visitors and family and gifts, too.

The Christmas Eve candlelight service was so beautiful. A gift and a blessing in these stressful times. Thank You John Kass for a great reminder of what is important. Thumbs down to the Chicago Trib that makes you "pay" for "Digital Plus" just to read John Kass´s column; it´s the Chicago Way!

Given recent events here and around the world and what we´re facing in the next four years, this is the perfect day to focus on our Lord and our families and to count our many blessings.
Here in northern Virginia we have a rare and unexpected blessing - a White Christmas. Just enough snow, 3 inches, to make everything look gorgeous, but not enough to be annoying.

A front-page Washington Post story by one of the nation’s top political reporters, Dan Balz, points out that a new Washington Post-ABC News poll found 47 percent saying they approve of the Bush presidency–an approval rating today that is equal to President Obama’s. Brandon Wyzbinski-Gelzer didn´t read much, but when he did, he usually picked up Reader´s Digest condensed books. So when his parents decided to turn a kitchen cabinet built by their son into a mini-library and install it in front of their east side home, an artist decoupaged pages from Reader´s Digest condensed books on the tiny repository, which features a handmade sign: "Little Free Library Brought to You by Brandon´s Tool Shed."

The soft and at times obsequious interview Steve Kroft of “60 Minutes” did with Barack Obama (and Hillary Clinton) has received a lot of justifiable criticism. (Conor Friedersdorf demolishes Kroft in this piece.) Mr. Kroft didn’t help himself when he told CNN’s Piers Morgan that one of the reasons the president turns to Kroft so often is that he doesn’t use “gotcha questions” on Mr. Obama–the kind that “60 Minutes” routinely used against President Bush and other Republicans like Representative Eric Cantor.

When it first became clear that the CIA’s Benghazi talking points had been altered, many of us viewed the White House as the prime suspect. After all, it served President Obama’s political purposes to claim, at the height of a political campaign in which he was taking credit for the fall of al Qaeda, that the death of a U.S. ambassador was down to spontaneous outrage over a video, rather than pre-planned terrorism. It turns out, however, that the State Department was the prime culprit. It was State that pushed back hard against the original talking points.

The Seattle Police Department collected more than 700 guns during a buyback in January, and now city officials have a plan for what to do with them. Mayor Mike McGinn is expected to announce Tuesday that they´ll be melted into bricks carrying messages of peace, and the bricks will be placed around the city. Former Gov. Mark Sanford completed the trail to political redemption Tuesday with a win over Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch to reclaim his old seat in Congress. Sanford defeated Colbert Busch 54 percent to 45 percent, according to full unofficial results. Turnout was heavier than expected, with about 32 percent of the district’s 455,702 registered voters casting ballots. Mark Sanford has won the South Carolina special election in a competitive race for what in normal circumstances is a safe Republican seat. The former governor beat Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert Busch, for the state’s 1st congressional district. The AP called the race for Sanford early in the evening, with the Republican leading Colbert Busch 54 percent 46 percent.

British physicist Stephen Hawking has dropped plans to attend a major international conference in Israel in June, citing his belief that he should respect a Palestinian call to boycott contacts with Israeli academics. The University of Cambridge released a statement Wednesday indicating that Hawking had told the Israelis last week that he would not be attending "based on advice from Palestinian academics that he should respect the boycott." University officials said they had "previously understood" that Hawking´s decision was based solely on health concerns — he is 71 and has severe disabilities — but had now been told otherwise by Hawking´s office.
