| For all the children who should be loved always, but especially on this wondrous night, with our arms around them and a long good-night kiss on the temple, a kiss more precious than anything wrapped in a box. He is the gift!
[Amen... A Must Read... again and again... and from Chicago]
FTA: And for everyone who keeps hold of what is important about this night: It is that message brought to us by the child who came to light the world, that perfect child born in that manger in Bethlehem so very long ago.
He is the gift.
In the words of Tiny Tim..."God bless us, Everyone!"

What a beautiful article. Thank you for posting it and to the man who wrote it. I found myself in the listing and loved ones. My son-in-law wrote that their family has recovered from the flu, and it was good to hear the sound of laughter in their home again. This Christmas, especially, seems less than perfect for so many people, but may we all find some reason for laughter today. Even if there is no laughter, may there be the joy of knowing the Lord Jesus Christ who said He would never leave us nor forsake us.

One more: For the clergy. I´m grateful for the priest at Mass who is there for me (and the rest of the congregation). I don´t know what they do after the services but I hope they have visitors and family and gifts, too.

The Christmas Eve candlelight service was so beautiful. A gift and a blessing in these stressful times. Thank You John Kass for a great reminder of what is important. Thumbs down to the Chicago Trib that makes you "pay" for "Digital Plus" just to read John Kass´s column; it´s the Chicago Way!

Given recent events here and around the world and what we´re facing in the next four years, this is the perfect day to focus on our Lord and our families and to count our many blessings.
Here in northern Virginia we have a rare and unexpected blessing - a White Christmas. Just enough snow, 3 inches, to make everything look gorgeous, but not enough to be annoying.
Blessed Christmas to all!

Merry Christmas to all.
Let us remember the parents in Newtown and the sadness in their hearts as they linger in a doorway, hoping those empty beds are all a bad dream.
Let us remember those who had no one to share the day. Your phone call would have made a difference.

Bethpage, N.Y. — Alex and Jamie Schneider run seemingly on instinct, saying nothing and drifting into a cone of concentration. They are autistic 22-year-old identical twins from Long Island whose passion is to run for miles at a time. The twins, who are nonverbal and can exhibit severe behaviors like self-injury and tantrums, have completed more than 120 races, including five marathons and eight half-marathons, over the past seven years. “They thrive on the repetition and routine of racing,” said their mother, Robyn Schneider. “You finish, get a medal, high-five everyone

A front-page Washington Post story by one of the nation’s top political reporters, Dan Balz, points out that a new Washington Post-ABC News poll found 47 percent saying they approve of the Bush presidency–an approval rating today that is equal to President Obama’s. This complicates just a bit the misguided arguments made by Walter Russell Mead the other week and which I rebutted here.[Snip] And every day he was president–even when he got decisions wrong–he dignified the office.

Thirty years ago, the fabled 1983 N.F.L. draft gave the league John Elway, Dan Marino and Eric Dickerson. But the last player picked in that draft, with the 335th overall pick in the 12th round, left a mark as well. His name was John Tuggle, a fullback out of California. While he might have been 1983’s Mr. Irrelevant — the nickname traditionally given to the last player picked — he was anything but to the Giants, who selected him, and to their starting fullback, Rob Carpenter, who mentored him. “I think about him every day,” Carpenter said. Wide headline split by Staff.

Really? Bobbie Smith, too? Geez. This is what I´m thinking when word comes that the lead singer of the Spinners has died. It comes a month after Richard Street and Damon Harris, who sang on "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" with the Temptations, passed away just days apart. [Snip] But - and you don´t quite understand this when you´re 12 - for as much as life takes, it also gives: the solace of memories, the tough teachings of experience, the hard-won recognition of the difference between marathon and sprint. Brandon Wyzbinski-Gelzer didn´t read much, but when he did, he usually picked up Reader´s Digest condensed books. So when his parents decided to turn a kitchen cabinet built by their son into a mini-library and install it in front of their east side home, an artist decoupaged pages from Reader´s Digest condensed books on the tiny repository, which features a handmade sign: "Little Free Library Brought to You by Brandon´s Tool Shed."

The soft and at times obsequious interview Steve Kroft of “60 Minutes” did with Barack Obama (and Hillary Clinton) has received a lot of justifiable criticism. (Conor Friedersdorf demolishes Kroft in this piece.) Mr. Kroft didn’t help himself when he told CNN’s Piers Morgan that one of the reasons the president turns to Kroft so often is that he doesn’t use “gotcha questions” on Mr. Obama–the kind that “60 Minutes” routinely used against President Bush and other Republicans like Representative Eric Cantor.

A lot of talent, a dash of luck, some leadership and a comedian — every undefeated, top-ranked, on-top-of-the-world Notre Dame team has required one “great clown,” Ara Parseghian, the former Fighting Irish coach, said recently. Then he thought: well, Lou Holtz’s 1988 championship team had three.

When it first became clear that the CIA’s Benghazi talking points had been altered, many of us viewed the White House as the prime suspect. After all, it served President Obama’s political purposes to claim, at the height of a political campaign in which he was taking credit for the fall of al Qaeda, that the death of a U.S. ambassador was down to spontaneous outrage over a video, rather than pre-planned terrorism. It turns out, however, that the State Department was the prime culprit. It was State that pushed back hard against the original talking points.

Republican lawmakers, who have spent months seeking to tie President Obama to last year’s deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, are increasingly focusing their probe on a new target: former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton. The GOP-led investigation of the Sept. 11, 2012, assaults that killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three others now centers heavily on the State Department and whether officials there deliberately misled the public about the nature of the assault. Three State Department officials are scheduled to testify before a House committee on Wednesday about the Benghazi attack and its aftermath.

If ponies rode men and grass ate cows, And cats were chased into holes by the mouse … If summer were spring and the other way round, Then all the world would be upside down. Once in a long while, an event evokes one of my favorite historical images: the British Army band, at Lord Cornwallis’ surrender at Yorktown which sealed the Americans’ revolutionary victory, playing “The World Turned Upside Down.” In this case, the event is the dramatic change over the past two weeks

The Seattle Police Department collected more than 700 guns during a buyback in January, and now city officials have a plan for what to do with them. Mayor Mike McGinn is expected to announce Tuesday that they´ll be melted into bricks carrying messages of peace, and the bricks will be placed around the city. The buyback program was announced a month after last December´s elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., by city leaders sick of hearing about gun violence. Former Gov. Mark Sanford completed the trail to political redemption Tuesday with a win over Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch to reclaim his old seat in Congress. Sanford defeated Colbert Busch 54 percent to 45 percent, according to full unofficial results. Turnout was heavier than expected, with about 32 percent of the district’s 455,702 registered voters casting ballots. Sanford, who has never lost an election, returns to the 1st District seat he held for three terms from 1995-2001. It’s a remarkable comeback for a man many pundits had written off after his highly publicized affair with an Argentine

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee took to the House floor Monday night and implied that the right to health care and education exists in the Constitution. Ms. Jackson Lee, Texas Democrat, also made the case that the moral authority for such services is also derived from the Declaration of Independence. “One might argue that education and health care fall into those provisions of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” she said. Ms. Jackson Lee added, “I think that what should be continuously emphasized is the president’s leadership on one single point: that although health care was not

Mark Sanford has won the South Carolina special election in a competitive race for what in normal circumstances is a safe Republican seat. The former governor beat Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert Busch, for the state’s 1st congressional district. The AP called the race for Sanford early in the evening, with the Republican leading Colbert Busch 54 percent 46 percent.

From the start, the Obama administration’s account of what happened in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11 last year didn’t quite square for Sharyl Attkisson. So the veteran CBS News reporter dug in, and kept digging. The result: Attkisson has been a persistent voice of news-media skepticism about the government’s story. On the air and online, Attkisson has questioned the administration’s timeline and its response. (Snip) While other media, particularly Fox News, have been similarly skeptical about the official narrative about Benghazi, Attkisson and CBS might put the story in a different light. British physicist Stephen Hawking has dropped plans to attend a major international conference in Israel in June, citing his belief that he should respect a Palestinian call to boycott contacts with Israeli academics. The University of Cambridge released a statement Wednesday indicating that Hawking had told the Israelis last week that he would not be attending "based on advice from Palestinian academics that he should respect the boycott." University officials said they had "previously understood" that Hawking´s decision was based solely on health concerns — he is 71 and has severe disabilities — but had now been told otherwise by Hawking´s office.
