Bill McBride, Florida gubernatorial
candidate defeated by Jeb Bush in 2002,
dies at 67

Miami Herald, by Steve Bousquet

Original Article

Bill McBride, a gregarious Tampa lawyer with a common touch whose dream of becoming Florida’s governor ended in a one-sided 2002 loss to Jeb Bush, died Saturday. He was 67. McBride, the husband of Alex Sink, the 2010 Democratic candidate for governor, suffered a heart attack while on a holiday trip to North Carolina.

Comments:
A combat Marine officer who wept when he read ´Matterhorn´, Bill will be missed by all who knew him. He ran a great campaign to beat Janet Reno in the primary and an honorable campaign against Jeb Bush. A good life and great family.

Trucker Bumps I-5 Bridge,
Sees Horror Behind Him

Mt. Vernon, Wash. - The trucker was hauling a load of drilling equipment when his load bumped against the steel framework over an Interstate 5 bridge. He looked in his rearview mirror and watched in horror as the span collapsed into the water behind him. Two vehicles fell into the icy Skagit River. Amazingly, nobody was killed. The three people who fell into the water escaped with only minor injuries. Officials are trying to find out whether the spectacular collapse of a bridge on one of the West's most important roadways was a fluke — or a sign of a bigger problem with thousands of

Five or six years ago a distinguished writer-director (if I may be permitted the epithet in connection with a Hollywood personage) was co-author of a screen play nominated for an Academy Award. He was too nervous to attend the proceedings on the big night, so he was listening to a broadcast at home, pacing the floor tensely, chewing his fingers, taking long breaths, scowling and debating with himself in hoarse whispers whether to stick it out until the Oscars were announced, or turn the damned radio off and read about it in the papers the next morning.

They say it´s a story of survival. Protect yourself and what´s yours by whatever means necessary. “It´s either kill or be killed,” said Eric Anderson, 18. “It´s playin´ for keeps. You gotta live like this.” Mr. Anderson was one of 199 people in Toledo who were shot in 2012, down slightly from the 210 reported shootings the year prior, but still a dramatic increase from 121 shootings in 2010, the first year the Toledo Police Department started keeping track of such statistics.

Home Amid Chinese Highway
a Symbol of Resistance
ABC News, by Didi Tang    Original Article

In the middle of an eastern Chinese city´s new main road, rising incongruously from a huge circle in the freshly laid pavement, is a five-story row house with ragged edges. This is the home of the duck farmer who said "no." Luo Baogen and his wife are the lone holdouts from a neighborhood that was demolished to make way for the main thoroughfare heading to a newly built railway station on the outskirts of the city of Wenling in Zhejiang province.

Bill Clinton: American Military Is

Weekly Standard, by Daniel Halper    Original Article

At a campaign rally for President Barack Obama yesterday in Virginia, former President Bill Clinton talked about bringing "this country together" and crossing "all of its diversity." Then, Clinton added this: "One of the things the decider-in-chief has to do is decide whether he’s going to bring this country together across all its diversity or let it drift apart. Look at how much stronger the American military is because it is less racist, less sexist and less homophobic and we’re just looking for people who can do the job," said Clinton.

Singer Miley Cyrus may have thumbed her nose at critics of her risqué Bangerz tour, but parents and concerned citizen groups are still weighing in on what many see as a performer who is evolving into a symbol of cultural decay. As Breitbart News’ Christian Toto has reported, Cyrus tweeted a message to critics of her racy on-stage antics: “Save your complaints for the McDonalds drive thru when they forget the ‘fries with that.’” People has reported Cyrus’ latest surprise. Dressed in a sparkling black cat suit and platform pumps, the former Hannah Montana, while singing Adore You during her

On Sunday evening, award-winning actor and prominent left-wing activist Alec Baldwin announced that he was leaving "public life"--and blamed "Roger Ailes. And Fox. And Breitbart." In an extended rant to Joe Hogan, posted on vulture.com and published in New York magazine, Baldwin recounted his run-ins with paparazzi, his gay slur controversies, and his ill-fated talk show on MSNBC--but he reserved special resentment for Breitbart. "There is a core of outlets that are pushing these stories out. Breitbart clutters the blogosphere with ´Alec Baldwin, he’s the Devil, he’s Fidel Baldwin,´" Baldwin claimed. Employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) destroyed veterans’ medical files in a systematic attempt to eliminate backlogged veteran medical exam requests, a former VA employee told The Daily Caller. Audio of an internal VA meeting obtained by TheDC confirms that VA officials in Los Angeles intentionally canceled backlogged patient exam requests.“The committee was called System Redesign and the purpose of the meeting was to figure out ways to correct the department’s efficiency. And one of the issues at the time was the backlog,” Oliver Mitchell, a Marine veteran and former patient services assistant in the VA Greater Los

Former Vice President Dick Cheney responded Monday night to the Obama administration’s proposal to cut the U.S. Army to its lowest point since before World War II. Calling into Fox News’ “Hannity,” Cheney declared the proposed cuts to be “absolutely dangerous” and “just devastating.” “I have not been a strong supporter of Barack Obama. But this really is over the top. It does enormous long-term damage to our military,” Cheney said. ”They act as though it is like highway spending and you can turn it on and off. The fact of the matter is he is having a huge impact

She may not look anywhere near her 76 years but Jane Fonda says she is well aware of her age. The Hollywood legend – who has made her career in an industry which isn´t exactly kind to aging actresses - admits she has been brought to tears on more than one occasion recently as she comes to terms with her own mortality. In a thoughtful blog post entitled ´Crying´, which has since been removed, Jane wrote: ´[I´ve been thinking], how come my tears are so close to the surface? And I’ve come to feel it has to do with age

Mitt Romney on Tuesday joined a growing chorus of Republicans urging the Arizona governor to veto a bill that would allow business owners to cite their religious beliefs in refusing service to gay people. The former Massachusetts governor tweeted at Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R), saying it “is right” to veto the bill passed by the state legislature last week. Brewer has not said whether she will sign or veto the measure. However, a number of media outlets have reported people close to her expect her to veto it. Brewer told CNN she would weigh both sides before deciding the right thing to

It has the makings of a royal mess for “King Barack.” Monday morning’s Supreme Court argument about the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases went badly for the Obama administration — so much so that the real question before the justices seemed to be how severe the EPA’s loss would be. The administration’s solicitor general, Donald Verrilli, pleaded with the justices to recognize the “urgent problem” of climate change, because the “threat to future generations gets worse” with each passing year. But as the argument played out, the court’s swing justice, Anthony Kennedy, made clear that he

If this Harvard University student got her way, free speech on campus would be abolished and professors with dissenting views fired, because radical leftism is the only permissible political philosophy and the First Amendment is a barrier preventing modern colleges from fulfilling their proper role as indoctrination camps. Her name is Sandra Korn. She is a senior at Harvard and columnist for the Harvard Crimson. In a recent column, Korn unambiguously insisted that the university should stop guaranteeing professors and students the right to hold controversial views and pursue research that challenges liberalism. “If our university community opposes racism, sexism, and heterosexism, why

DETROIT -- In a fiery speech Sunday delivered to 18,000 at Joe Louis Arena, Minister Louis Farrakhan blasted the judicial systems in the U.S. as being biased against African Americans, calling upon the community to set up their own courts. We have to have our own courts." With Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., and Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones sitting behind him, Farrakhan spoke for nearly three hours, reiterating the Nation

Were he alive today, Richard Nixon would have to doff his hat to Barack Obama. Compared with how the Obama administration has swept under the rug the Benghazi attacks of September 11, 2012, Nixon’s attempt to cover up the Watergate burglary was rank amateurism. To be fair, Nixon’s team of Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell, and Dean were not in the same league as Obama’s, which includes not only his cabinet but most of the national media and much of Congress. If a president were intent on covering something up—something big, such as an illegal gun walking operation to Mexico or a dereliction

Republican lobbyist Jack Burkman is pushing for legislation that would ban openly gay athletes from the National Football League, spurred on by the recent news about Michael Sam publicly coming out. He is appealing directly to Republican members of Congress to propose a bill on the issue, telling The Huffington Post that there are five House members and one senator “interested in co-sponsoring the bill” and he expects more to join on. Burkman acknowledges that normally, conservatives don’t like the idea of imposing policy on private businesses, but says that this belief is now “trumped for reason of great urgency or
