Egyptians approve first
post-uprising constitution

Al-Ahram [Cairo, Egypt], by Hatem Maher

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 12/22/2012 11:17:58 PM

Egypt´s hotly disputed draft constitution, the first following last year´s uprising, is sure to pass after unofficial results Sunday show that around 64 per cent of Egyptians voted in favour. A resounding victory in the second phase of the constitutional referendum gave a much-needed boost to Islamists, who believe the new constitution will pave the way for a smooth and swift transition to democracy under President Mohamed Morsi. {Snip) The "yes" vote won in the first phase by a relatively narrow 56.5 per cent but was able to extend their margin of victory on Sunday.

Comments:
Not "living" in Egypt makes it a little hard to interpret what the outcome of this "forced" constitution by Morsi´s Muslim Brotherhood led party. However, in trying to impart the Wahabi form of Islam in it may have been more than the people who removed Hosni Mubarak are willing to take. And, I would imagine from recent demonstrations, they can amass and probably still have their weapons. Time will tell.

If the 70% are too afraid to VOTE, what makes you think they are brave enough to stand up to the head hackers?
And when will the world acknowledge that ALL of this, including the rest of the "arab spring"that ceded power to strong enemies of the USA, was done during, and with the help, of the obama administration?

San Diego - Republican Councilman Kevin Faulconer has defeated Democratic Councilman David Alvarez, 54.5% to 45.5%, to become the city´s next mayor, according to unofficial results tallied by the county registrar of voters. The tally includes all absentee votes and votes from all 582 precincts. Unofficial turnout for the special election was 37%. Alvarez, 33, said he called Faulconer to offer his congratulations and say that he looks forward "to working with him." Faulconer returned the compliment and promised that the two will work together "to move our city forward." Acting Mayor Todd Gloria, a Democrat who endorsed Alvarez,

Tuscon - A Mexican man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday for Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry´s slaying, which led to the unraveling of the failed federal gun-tracking operation known as Fast and Furious. Manuel Osorio-Arellanes, 37, who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in October 2012 in exchange for avoiding the death penalty, apologized in court. "I regret what happened, sir," Osorio-Arellanes told the judge in Spanish. "I too was hurt. I don´t know what else to say. Please forgive me." He was part of a group of bandits who engaged in a shootout with Terry and three other Border Patrol agents in southern Arizona,

Of course it´s too early to talk about 2016. Now that we´ve gotten that out of the way... The most interesting dynamic so far is that the Democrats are behaving like Republicans — and vice versa. Since 1940, with the arguable exception of Barry Goldwater, Republicans have nominated the guy next in line. Thomas Dewey almost beat Wendell Willkie for the nomination in 1940, so in 1944 — and 1948 — it was his turn. Dwight Eisenhower, whom both parties wanted as their nominee, was a special case, given that whole invading-Europe-and-defeating-Hitler thing. Richard Nixon was Ike's vice president in 1960, and in 1968

EU rules must be changed to allow more testing of potentially life-saving cancer drugs on children, say experts. The UK´s Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) says the current system acts as a disincentive to drug companies who can seek waivers to avoid doing the trials. Of 28 new cancer drugs approved in the EU for adults since 2007, 26 could potentially work in children, but 14 have been exempted from child testing. The ICR wants these "class waivers" to be scrapped. The European Commission is considering whether to change its guidelines.

House Republicans return to Washington on Monday still struggling to find a path to raising the Treasury Department’s borrowing authority, but the normally raucous caucus is in unusual agreement that the best option is to put the white-knuckle confrontations of recent fiscal wars behind them. Facing a timeline that leaves no room for trial and error, some party leaders were advocating a debt-ceiling solution that would wrap several popular, must-pass items around a provision to extend the federal government’s borrowing authority beyond the November midterm elections. That approach has drawn support from some surprising quarters,

In the midst of a busy 2012 election cycle, Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin´s offhand remark to a local television station about what constituted "legitimate rape" might have slipped under the radar. Within hours, the Democratic "super PAC" had uploaded the clip to YouTube and pushed it to reporters — ensuring that it blew up on Twitter and headed to the top of national news. Swiss voters have narrowly backed a referendum proposal to bring back strict quotas for immigration from European Union countries. Final results showed 50.3% voted in favour. It´s no surprise that Barack Obama´s authoritarian streak is revealing itself at last. It was always there; clearly apparent in his rhetoric (e.g., his envy of Chinese president Xi Jin-ping´s powers), his abuse of executive orders, his threats against Congress, his sultan with fly-whisk attitudes toward his opposition, and even his vacations, which reek more of third-world trash gamboling on the Riviera than any American leader (George W. Bush settled his mind by clearing brush in Texas, Reagan at his ranch in Santa Barbara. Obama unfortunately finds the brush already cleared in Martha´s Vineyard and Hawaii.)

Powerful winds in the Pacific Ocean, which have driven surface heat deep underwater, could be the reason behind the current ‘pause’ in global warming. This is according to a joint Australian and U.S. study which has looked at why there has been a slowdown in the planet’s global average surface temperature over the past decade. Their research shows that trade winds in central and eastern parts of the Pacific have caused warm surface water to sink to the ocean´s depths, reducing the amount of heat in the atmosphere. Last year, scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said the pace of

From its inception, the strategy behind the Obama administration’s implementation of ObamaCare has been simple: to frontload the benefits and postpone the pain and costs of this massive government intrusion into the private sector for as long as possible. This deceitful approach enabled President Obama run for reelection in 2012 on the spurious promise of extending insurance coverage to the poor and those with pre-existing conditions without being held accountable for the problems with the law that would only become apparent in his second term.
