Man Out of Time
American Spectator, by Daniel J. Flynn

Jack Webb, who died thirty years ago this weekend, arrived at the right time. “After the war, people were much more realistic,” notes Peggy Webber, star of more than 100 Dragnet episodes. “They wanted things to be as honest as possible. And he filled the bill.” Dragnet, as the just-the-facts catchphrase it inspired indicates, depicted police work without the frills. Whereas other detective stories attracted listeners through the promise of a weekly shootout, Dragnet snagged them by keeping the weapons holstered. The iconic music, gimmicky teasers promising to reveal case results, and insistence that the show dramatized real-life events

"My partner and I witnessed that little torchlight picnic you threw last night, we´re gonna put you where your kind always ends up - in a seven by seven foot grey-green metal cage in the fifteenth floor of some hundred-year-old penitentiary, with damp, stinking walls and a wooden plank for a bed. Sure, this city isn´t perfect, we need a smut-free life for all of our citizens; cleaner streets, better schools, and good hockey team. But the big difference between you and me, mister, is you made the promise, and I´m going to keep it."

"Listen, hotshot. I´m gonna tell you something right now. I don´t care for you or for the putrid sludge you´re troweling out. But until they change the laws and put you sleaze kings out of business, my job is to help you get back your stench ridden boxes of smut. And since I´ll be doing it holding my nose, I´ll be doing it with one hand."

I liked the Dragnet TV series, but the characters were entirely one dimensional and impossible to believe. Joe Friday had almost no real life. It was all cop all the time. No fun, no humor, nothing but cop. An occasional date that led nowhere.
I liked some of the later series better. Adam-12 was significantly more realistic but still oversimplified. Baretta and Starsky & Hutch were more interesting, if darker.
I do hope they retired his badge number (714) as a tribute though.

They things are going these days, Jack Webb would be ruined in the media as some sort of judgemental wacko.

The wackos and spineless jellyfish are now the caretakers of the world since the media has now picked the last two presidential winners, and anyone who takes a stand for the traditional tried and true way is laughed and ridiculed at by those conducting what Rush calls the "media anal exam".

Its a pitiful shame that we have sold our birthright for a heaping helping of fake Obama pottage as media pop culture has replaced truth, honesty and character.

Excellent series. Always enjoyed his ability to destroy hippies and other malcontents and their "drugged out, pie in the sky" dreams with a simple return to facts.

Unfortunately, look who won in the long run.

He was certainly representative of our veterans returning from WWII and Korea. No mood for childish or ridiculously looking and sounding college juveniles.
We miss you, Jack Webb.

Merry Christmas everyone.

The Pentagon held internal talks on declassifying sensitive missile defense technology that it plans to share with Russia as part of the Obama administration’s efforts to assuage Moscow’s opposition to European defenses. Republicans in both the House and Senate plan to block any technology declassification for missile defense technology in the current defense authorization bill and other legislation. Legislative mark up on the authorization bill begins this week. Critics say giving Russia classified data would undermine the effectiveness of missile defenses, which have cost taxpayers more than $100 billion since the 1980s. Vice Adm. Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus gave their answer to numerous interview requests following their escape from years of captivity last week in Cleveland: thanks, but no thanks. The three, understandably, want their space, at least until the trial of accused kidnapper Ariel Castro is over. This weekend, Attorney Jim Wooley read a statement to the media on behalf of the three families (printed in full at the Cleveland Plain Dealer), with a message that couldn´t be more clear to those seeking on-the-record time with the three victims:

Bill and Hillary Clinton will not support Anthony Weiner in his dream of becoming mayor even though they love his wife, Huma Abedin, sources say. “The Clintons wish Weiner would just disappear. Every time he pops up, it’s a reminder of Bill’s scandal with Monica Lewinsky, and it isn’t helpful to Hillary’s hopes for 2016,” one Democrat told Page Six. Abedin has worked for the former US senator and secretary of state for many years, and traveled with her as her “body woman,” her closest aide. It is believed that Abedin is still on the Clintons’ payroll

I´m not the smartphone gaming type — Words with Friends, Scrabble, and Fruit Ninja all sit on my iPhone screen, but they haven´t been tapped for months. But, Dots — Dots is dangerous. Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis testified before Congress today that federal officials didn’t share their intelligence on Boston marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsanaev until days after pictures of the alleged terrorists surfaced. Davis told lawmakers the FBI began to share information about their 2011 investigation only after Tamerlan died following a gun battle with law enforcement. Russian officials had flagged Tamerlan Tsarnaev as a possible extremist in 2011. The FBI had investigated him and knew he traveled back to Russia months before the bombings.

A preliminary tally indicates that almost a third of all of the managed bee colonies in the United States — 31.1 percent — didn´t survive the winter. That makes it the fourth-worst winter since 2006. Bee Informed, a partnership funded in part by the Department of Agriculture, released its annual survey of colony deaths yesterday. For the seventh winter in a row, the percentage of colonies that didn´t survive exceeded the "acceptable" range of 14 percent. For the fourth time in those seven seasons, the percentage that didn´t survive was double what scientists consider acceptable.

The European Union, you might have heard, has some pretty serious economic-and-debt problems going on, but don’t you dare accuse them of neglecting the little things. They’ve found the time (and, presumably, the money and resources necessary for the added bureaucracy and enforcement) to attempt to expand further their regulation of the farming industry, as well as outlaw certain seeds that haven’t been explicitly tested and approved. They say they’re just trying to streamline and better the existing regulations, but not everyone’s convinced: The European Commission is reforming the European Union’s plant and animal health legislation

Call it “Oval Office Couch Syndrome.” By the second term “inside the bubble,” presidents have completely lost touch with reality: Aides and confidants conspire to keep the chief executive insulated from the real world — the bad news, the worse press coverage. They think it’s their job, and lounging on the Oval Office couches, they nod along with the president’s every musing. But this presidency has taken OOCS to new heights — Mr. Obama has only a few trusted aides, and occasional leaks from the West Wing show a paranoid president suspicious of nearly everyone around him.

While there is always pungent hypocrisy when one gang of politicians accuses another gang of playing politics, the current phony outrage from the Obama Protection Society is exceptionally putrid. Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, is on the list of potential Democratic presidential candidates compiled by the extraordinarily astute Prez16.com . As a cabinet secretary (and as a potential, if dark horse, presidential nominee) Madame Secretary should refrain from slurring the Drudge Report, as recently she did, a slur Drudge, confidently, featured. Drudge is no fan of Napolitano. He regularly tweaks her as “Big Sis” (presumably an allusion to George Orwell’s “Big Brother”). Drudge is one of the most powerful — and widely respected — forces in the news business today.

Esteemed Republican strategist and lobbyist Roger Stone writes in his upcoming book that former president Lyndon B. Johnson set up John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Stone also writes that Richard Nixon and Johnson had a documented relationship with Jack Ruby, Lee Harvey Oswald’s killer, years before he shot Oswald in the basement of Dallas police headquarters in 1963. Stone, who worked for Richard Nixon’s Committee to Re-elect the President in 1972 and later served in the Nixon administration, writes that Johnson, a congressman at the time, instructed Richard Nixon, also a congressman at the time, to hire Ruby onto
