| PHILADELPHIA – The family of a Philadelphia teenager who says she was mocked by her geometry teacher for wearing a Mitt Romney T-shirt to class has sued the teacher and the school district. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the lawsuit claims the district ignored 16-year-old Samantha Pawlucy´s right to free speech. The lawsuit claims the district let other students harass Pawlucy and subjected her to emotional distress. It seeks unspecified damages. A district spokesman won´t comment. Teacher Lynette Gaymon has apologized to Pawlucy. A telephone message left Friday for Gaymon hasn´t been returned. Pawlucy says the teacher questioned why

This teenage young woman was subjected to public humiliation by an "authority figure" who now wishes to escape responsibility for her actions. Actions have consequences.

Isn´t Mz. Gaymon a negro? Perhaps she was just a black wanting to show her support for a fellow black - not at all racist.s/o Mz. Gaymon should therefore get a pass and a promotion in the school system...maybe assistant superintendent and a very healthy pay raise. Sickening and disgusting!

Dear Samantha, Stay strong and bleed them for as much as you can. Pretend you are a union officer. ´They´ owe it to you! The teacher should be fired. Keep in mind the lessons that you will learn along the way will be worth more than the money. Ahh, but the money.....make sure you get enough to pay for college. Oh yeah, pick a college that will embrace your opinions.

In 10th grade civics class in Akron, Ohio we had a mock election with a supposedly secret ballot. When it was all over the two of us who voted for Gerald Ford were singled out by the "cool guy" teacher and then the rest of the class. It was an early lesson that not going along with the herd has consequences. I wish I had known it was worth money.

This woman was not a teacher, she was the biggest bully in the room. And this is one of the reasons why, as a gun owner type, I am very hesitant to arm teachers in this country. Until they can find a way to weed out the bullies, drug takers and child molesting pervs from carrying guns,(and the classroom as a whole) I am not for teachers being armed. Janitors/maintenance people yes. Teachers no.

Southfield Public Schools today announced wide-ranging changes at the high school level that officials say will help the district improve the way it meets the needs of its increasingly transient population. Among the changes: Separating by gender classes in math, language arts, science and social studies at two high schools in a pilot program to test whether that improves academic achievement. The changes are not new, but few districts try so many of them at one time.[Snip] “What we wanted is a systemic jolt to the system,” Southfield Superintendent Wanda Cook-Robinson

There´s good news for those who fear things that bite in the night. Bed bugs could one day be captured using artificial surfaces that mimic bean leaves, researchers say.[Snip] Recently, though, researchers heard of a traditional Balkan remedy for bedbugs, a centuries-old technique used in Bulgaria, Serbia and other Eastern European countries. Bean leaves scattered on the floor next to beds seem to entrap the bugs as they scurry along the floor at night. The insect-encrusted leaves are then burned the next morning. "The resurgent bedbug populations show a worrisome resistance to insecticides

An old folk remedy for bed bugs is being studied by scientists. The remedy — which comes from Eastern Europe — uses bean leaves to capture the parasites, reports The New York Times. Bean leaves are spread around the room with bed bugs. Each leaf is covered in thousands of tiny hooks — similar to velcro — that catch the insects. The hooks manage to pierce the insects where their exoskeleton is thinnest. The leaves are gathered in the morning and burned to kill the bugs. The study — soon to be published

Obama, Kerry and Hagel thought that they had a plan for putting North Korea back in the box. North Korea had conducted a nuclear test in February, violating once again the various understandings that had been worked out. But agreements and understandings, written or oral, had never meant much to the repressive regime which had suspended the Armistice Agreement that ended the Korean War numerous times—including last month. So Obama decided to wave a stick. The playbook for North Korea would feature flights by B-2 and B-52 bombers and F-22 fighter jets to remind the North Korean military

Europe is swirling in a maelstrom, and it is hard to see what can save the mother continent of so much we cherish. The sovereign debt crisis -- national governments which cannot honor their promises to repay holders of their bonds -- is spreading from the original PIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain) to neighboring nations. Italy is the worst new case, but France now has a "negative" bond rating by all three of the major rating services -- Fitch, Moody´s, and Standard & Poor´s. Belgium, Holland, and Austria, countries associated with the relatively prudent finances

In back-to-back interviews with a pair of Spanish-language television networks last Wednesday, Barack Obama expressed confidence that an immigration-reform bill—i.e., a path-to amnesty for 10 to 20 million guaranteed Democratic voters—could be passed “certainly before the end of the summer.” [Snip] So many crusades, so little time. One day it’s voting rights; the next day, gun control and immigration reform; then health care; then student loans; then climate change; then oil drilling; then the coal industry; then gay marriage; then minimum-wage and living-wage laws; then a brain research initiative.

Just over a week ago, Chicago Public School (CPS) officials announced the closing of 54 elementary schools contained in 61 buildings, located in poor, mostly black and Hispanic neighborhoods. The move represents the largest mass closing of schools in the nation’s history. CPS, facing a projected budget deficit of $1 billion in 2014, insists money spent keeping schools with declining enrollment open can be better used elsewhere. Approximately 30,000 students will be affected by the move. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and many parents are furious, and vow to fight.

CHICAGO –Airport operators are mounting a legal challenge to the Federal Aviation Administration´s decision to cut funding for 149 air traffic control towers, accusing the agency of violating federal law meant to ensure major changes at airports do not erode safety. Several airports are now asking a federal court to halt the plan and compel the FAA to more carefully study the potential safety impact, said Carl Olson, director of the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington, Ill. He warned that without a more cautious approach, lives will be put at risk by cuts that he contends

It was billed as a state-of-the-art transportation hub that was going to give students at South Carolina State University a leg up on the competition. The four building, 33-acre complex, named after its most famous alumnus, Rep. James Clyburn, would be a monument to the future -- where students could get hands-on experience and be a part of groundbreaking research in transportation. Fast forward 15 years and the site once called the "project of the future" has morphed into a money-sucking pit. Aside from the $24 million in federal funding already spent on the project, an estimated $80 million

Cardinal Timothy Dolan is quick with a quip and, more often than not, he is the target of his own sense of humor -- a trait that will continue to serve him well if he is to become the first American pope. While archbishop of Milwaukee a decade ago, Dolan once wore the Green Bay Packers’ trademark “cheesehead” hat during a homily. Last September, he shared a stage at Fordham University with Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert for a moderated discussion of humor and faith and more than held his own in generating laughs. And when named a cardinal

Last week, the president of Emory University, James W. Wagner, was censured by faculty members, and may even be forced to resign when faculty reconvene later this month to decide his fate. Wagner’s great sin, you see, is that in an article in his school’s magazine, he cited “the three-fifths compromise over slavery” as a paradigmatic illustration of the art of political comprise. In response to the backlash against this act of his, Wagner issued the obligatory mea culpa and deplored the “clumsiness and insensitivity” of his piece. Still, the enlightened professoriate at Emory has thus far withheld its mercy.

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.

In Philadelphia, at a human abattoir on Lancaster Avenue, is where it ends, not where it starts. It starts with the perversion of language. It starts when the icons of a dissipated culture reduce a baby to a “fetus.” From there, Yeats’s blood-dimmed tide rolls rapidly in. Before long, a baby is not a person but a punishment, as President Barack Obama framed the matter in his familiar off-the-cuff iciness. Of course, to describe newborn children in their boundless possibilities and wonder would be to acknowledge, foremost, their humanity. That is why, instead, abortion enthusiasts must grope for words

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), one of the architects of the Affordable Care Act, said on Tuesday that the healthcare law, set to go into full effect in less than eight months, is “probably the most complex piece of legislation ever passed by the United States Congress” and “is just beyond comprehension.” Rockefeller said he is concerned that early missteps with implementing the healthcare overhaul may cascade into confusion and chaos. The law, said Rockefeller, is “so complicated and if it isn’t done right the first time, it will just simply get worse.” Rockefeller’s consternation echoes comments made earlier this

They say they were just doing what the boss trained them to do. But eight former employees of a run-down West Philadelphia abortion clinic now face prison time for the work they did for Dr. Kermit Gosnell. Three have pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. And Gosnell, 72, is on trial in the deaths of a patient and seven babies allegedly born alive. In testimony at the capital murder trial this past month, an unlicensed doctor and untrained aides described long, chaotic days at the clinic. They said they performed grueling, often gruesome work for little more than minimum wage,

With President Obama, there’s always a catch. In the 2014 budget he announced last week, Obama proposed a more accurate way of calculating the inflation rate for annual cost-of-living increases in Social Security. It’s a technical change in pursuit of honesty and good government. And if adopted, it would cause benefits to grow more slowly, though almost imperceptibly so. Republican leaders in Congress ought to be delighted since they had “championed”—Obama’s word—the idea in the first place. Then came the catch. The president’s price for adopting this gentle reform was hundreds of billions in new tax increases.

TALLAHASSEE - Picture this: You´re in the left lane of the interstate, driving a little below the speed limit, when some guy zips up behind you and swerves past you on the right. Then you notice the blue lights flashing. You´re savoring the satisfaction of seeing a trooper actually nab an aggressive driver — until you realize it´s you he´s pulling over. LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends. Our older son Nate, soon to be 10 years old, is a fourth grader at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Our younger son, Ben, age six, was murdered in his first-grade classroom on December 14th.
