I feel somewhat ashamed - I´ve read dozens of books and articles on the European Theater of WWII, but had never heard of this massacre.

That shall be remedied very soon - the book is "Fatal Crossroads" by Danny Parker.

The Nazis were pulling out all the stops in the last few months of the war. In addition to the Malmedy Massacre, this is also when certain German SS troops, who had some education in the US, were dressed up primarily as Army MPs running around shooting infantrymen who let their guards down thinking they were friendlies. Their command of American English and knowledge of US history and current events made them hard to spot.

#2-I asked my Father-in-law who was in The European Theater of Operations at the time of the Malmedy massacre and he said he never heard of it. This was 50+ years after the fact and many unit reunions later.

The lesson was, Mr. Paluch said, "Don´t trust the other guy."

The SS were brutal pigs, recruited into Himmler´s army from the lowest dregs of German society. To be captured by them was an almost certain death. Mr Paluch is extremely lucky to be alive.

Back in 1984, our Regimental staff and our Bundeswehr partnership Brigade staff conducted a staff ride of the "Bulge". Our German partners brought a retired Wehrmacht officer to describe the actual events from his perspective. We were fortunate to have Abrams the Younger in our group and he was able to relay what his father had shown him when he was a young man. Amazing historical perspective. I´m somewhat taken aback that many have forgotten this period of our history and how close we came to losing it. As an aside, I also met LTG(R) Harry Kimnard in 1983 in Garmisch and listened to his first hand description of being the 101ABN G3 in Bastogne.

Malmedy massacre is a very well known mass killing of our troops. I read about it as a kid in the 1960´s. Many WW2 books started coming out or re-issued about what happened during the war.

BTW in Steven Spielberg´s movie with Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan) he shows American soldiers callously killing German prisoners during the Normandy landing. That was only a movie.

Not real like what the Germans did. Liberals always try to compare us to brutal killers like the Germans and Japanese in WW2. Moral equivalence.

It is the liberals who lack morals.

My older brother was in the Battle of the Bulge. The only times he would talk about it was when we were out drinking too much. He never really got over the horrors of it.

Different time, different war, different men, and different prez.

My uncle, who jumped out of a crashing B-7, was shot and killed by Panzer SS as a surrendering prisoner. He was shaking a white handkerchief in his hand. The plane had been drooping supplies to partisans, waiting in the Forrest.

My family only discovered he had successfully exited the burning plane in 1989 at a memorial ceremony when we met one of the 2 airman who though shot had survived and was taken prisoner.

My father later met a woman who had come from the woods after the Germans left, and closed his eyes. She describe them as bright blue, which they were.

I have my uncle´s last letter he mailed from England before he was killed, as well as my father´s V-Mail letter to his brother which as returned, marked ´missing in action´.
