Cory Booker to explore run for
U.S. Senate rather than challenge
Gov. Chris Christie

New York Daily News, by Kristen A. Lee

New Jersey heavyweights Cory Booker and Chris Christie will not face off for the governor’s mansion next year, the Newark mayor confirmed Thursday. Booker said that he is exploring a run for his fellow Democrat Frank Lautenberg´s U.S. Senate seat in 2014, rather than taking on the popular New Jersey governor in 2013. Booker, who has been publicly flirting with a gubernatorial campaign, would have had an uphill battle against Christie, whose popularity soared in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Lautenberg, 88, has served five terms in the U.S. Senate since 1982, interrupted by a brief retirement.

Comments:
For those with short memories, Lautenberg was stuck on the ticket in New Jersey to run for the Senate, after the deadline for being able to do so. In other words, the union-led dRATS smacked the GOP again and won.

Good luck, Mr Mayor. As we know, Dimocrats stay in office until they get carried out in a zip-up rubber bag [Robert Byrd, Ted Kennedy, etc].

As a black politician, why get stuck in New Jersey politics when one can get elected to the US Senate and then end up as President in a few years?

It´s pretty clear now that the Democrats must always run and nominate a minority candidate in the future to win national elections, or the big black vote that they need to win might just stay home. More bad news for the likes of Hillary Clinton.

Booker will run and win. When Christie`s time is up a dem will take back the governorship and NJ will revert to the liberal hellhole it was pre-Christie.

Some things in life are just inevitable.

Booker once spoke the truth about BO then was cowed, threatened, or chicagoed back to the plantation followed by his groveling at the feet of BO. His opposition should pound him on that.

Lautenberg is to NJ as Byrd was to WV. Highway funds galore. King of pork. If he wants to run again he´ll beat anyone. He´s already greased too many palms. Booker should challenge Christie in the Democrat primary for Governor.

Beijing - China declared a "red line" on North Korea on Saturday, saying that China will not permit chaos or war on the Korean peninsula, and that peace can only come through denuclearization. China is North Korea´s most important diplomatic and economic supporter, though Beijing´s patience with Pyongyang has been severely tested following three nuclear tests and numerous bouts of saber rattling, including missile launches. "The Korean peninsula is right on China´s doorstep. We have a red line, that is, we will not allow war or instability on the Korean peninsula," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters on the

Kuala Lumpur - A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew crashed in the South China Sea on Saturday, Vietnamese state media said, quoting a senior naval official. The Boeing 777-200ER flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing had been missing for hours when Vietnam´s Tuoi Tre news quoted Admiral Ngo Van Phat as saying he had asked boats from an island off south Vietnam to rush to the crash site. If the report is confirmed, it would mark the U.S.-built airliner´s deadliest crash since entering service 19 years ago. Malaysia Airlines had yet to confirm that the aircraft had crashed. It said earlier in the day that no distress signal

Seoul, South Korea - A Chinese passenger jet with more than 200 people on board flew through the trajectory of a North Korean rocket that had been fired minutes earlier, the South Korean government said. North Korea fired the rocket Tuesday at 4:17 p.m. without giving any navigational warning, Kim Min-Seok, a spokesman for the South Korean Defense Ministry, said Wednesday. Seven minutes later, a China Southern Airlines plane carrying 220 passengers from Japan´s Narita airport to Shenyang in China passed through the rocket´s trajectory, he said. Washington - In 1995, Conrad Harper, the Clinton administration’s top State Department lawyer, appeared before a United Nations panel in Geneva to discuss American compliance with a global Bill of Rights-style treaty the Senate had recently ratified, and he was asked a pointed question: Did the United States believe it applied outside its borders? Mr. Harper returned two days later and delivered an answer: American officials, he said, had no obligations under the rights accord when operating abroad. The Bush administration would amplify that claim after the Sept. 11 attacks — and extend it to another United Nations

Moscow & Simferopol, Ukraine - President Vladimir Putin rebuffed a warning from U.S. President Barack Obama over Moscow´s military intervention in Crimea, saying on Friday that Russia could not ignore calls for help from Russian speakers in Ukraine. After an hour-long telephone call, Putin said in a statement that Moscow and Washington were still far apart on the situation in the former Soviet republic, where he said the new authorities had taken "absolutely illegitimate decisions on the eastern, southeastern and Crimea regions. Several security researchers and Western intelligence officers say they believe the malware, widely known as Turla, is the work of the Russian government and linked to the same software used to launch a massive breach on the U.S. military uncovered in 2008. Those assessments were based on analysis of tactics employed by hackers, along with technical indicators and the victims they targeted. "It is sophisticated

Russia said Ukraine must pay off almost $2 billion it owes it for natural gas by today and signaled it may cut supplies, ratcheting up the pressure on its cash-strapped neighbor as the two nations scrap over the future of the Black Sea Crimea region. Ukraine hasn’t made its February fuel payment and owes Russia $1.89 billion, according to gas export monopoly OAO Gazprom (OGZD), which halted supplies to Ukraine five years ago amid a pricing dispute, curbing flows to Europe. Earlier, lawmakers in Moscow said they’d accept the results of a March 16 referendum on Crimea joining Russia as Ukrainian Prime Minister

So, Lois Lerner still won´t talk about her role in the illegal targeting and harassment by the IRS of conservative and Tea Party groups seeking 501(c)(4) tax exemptions. Lerner appeared for a second time Wednesday before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and claimed her Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate herself. It isn´t hard to figure out why Lerner´s lips are sealed. First, she knows the House of Representatives can cite her for contempt of Congress, but Attorney General Eric Holder would decide whether she is prosecuted on that charge. During his speech to the CPAC crowd on Thursday, Sen. McCain said he spoke to Cruz about the comments and it was “cordial” but he took specific offense at the remarks concerning Dole. “He can say what he wants to about me and he can say anything he wants to about Mitt,” McCain said,

Via Matt Lewis, here’s Maverick once again demonstrating that “cordial relationship” in politico-speak means “two people who can’t publicly admit to hating each other but obviously do.” And it’s a cheap shot. Cruz’s point yesterday at CPAC was that Dole, McCain, and Romney lost because they weren’t conservative enough. That’s not because they’re gutless — he said specifically that they were “good” and “decent” men — but because they’re not committed, full-throated ideologues, even less so when they’re fighting for purple states in a national election. We can debate whether that’s true but there’s nothing offensive in raising the subject.

Where Lois Lerner goes, drama follows. On Wednesday, the former IRS officer again invoked the Fifth before the House Oversight Committee. That precipitated a heated exchange between the committee’s Republican chairman, Darrell Issa, and Democratic ranking member Elijah Cummings, who called the hearings “un-American.” And that spat has become the story. No doubt that is exactly what Cummings had in mind. Because it distracts attention from the substance of the hearings — and from the questions raised by e-mails and public remarks Lois Lerner wrote, received or made when she was IRS Director of Tax Exempt Organizations. WASHINGTON — Charles G. and David H. Koch, the billionaire brothers who are perhaps the best-known patrons of conservative Republican politics, are bespectacled and in their 70s. They look genial enough. But Democrats are embarking on a broad effort that aims to unmask the press-shy siblings and portray them, instead, as a pair of villains bent on wrecking progressive politics. On Thursday, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is starting a digital campaign that will use Internet ads and videos, as well as social media, to tie Republican Senate candidates to the policies and actions of the Koch brothers.
