William Daley considering bid for governor

| William Daley blamed the state´s fiscal crisis on a lack of political leadership in Springfield, where his fellow Democrats rule the Statehouse, in a speech Thursday as he sought to position himself for a 2014 bid for governor. Speaking for a half-hour before about 300 people at the City Club of Chicago, the former White House chief of staff and U.S. commerce secretary said he was "seriously" looking at a run for the Democratic nomination for governor — in contrast to two previous flirtations with seeking the office a decade ago and two years ago.

As tension rises between North Korea and America, the U.S. ambassador to South Korea, Sung Kim, went on a family vacation. The ambassador today shared his experience in a lengthy blog post. "My daughters recently had off from school for spring break, and I planned to take a week off for a nice family vacation. But as is often the case here on the Peninsula, my break was interrupted by important developments and urgent issues, so my week off turned into just one day," writes Kim. "But finally, we decided to take a three-day weekend and drive

LONDON -- The funeral of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s longest-serving leader of the 20th century, will be held in St. Paul’s Cathedral on April 17, officials said Tuesday. Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, are expected to attend what will be the most elaborate funeral to be staged in London since the death of the queen’s mother in 2002. It will be the first funeral of a prime minister that the queen will have attended since Winston Churchill’s in 1965. Thatcher, who died Monday at age 87 after years of declining health,

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea on Tuesday urged all foreign companies and tourists in South Korea to evacuate, saying the two countries are on the verge of nuclear war. The new threat appeared to be an attempt to keep the region on tenterhooks over its intentions. Analysts see a direct attack on Seoul as extremely unlikely, and there are no overt signs that North Korea´s 1.2 million-man army is readying for war, let alone a nuclear one. South Korea´s military has reported missile movements on North Korea´s east coast but nothing pointed toward South Korea.

Stopping through Connecticut for the first time since a mentally ill gunman slaughtered 20 first-graders and six educators at a Newtown elementary school in December, President Obama on Monday delivered an impassioned speech, rallying those affected by gun violence to "expect more" from Congress and to urge lawmakers to move this week on legislation. "The day Newtown happened was the toughest day of my presidency," Mr. Obama told the crowd at the University of Hartford, where family members of the massacre´s victims sat. "But I´ve got to tell you, if we don´t respond to this,

Since when has it been considered smart to tell your enemies what your plans are? Yet there on the front page of the April 8th New York Times was a story about how unnamed "American officials" were planning a "proportional" response to any North Korean attack. This was spelled in an example: If the North Koreans "shell a South Korean island that had military installations" then the South Koreans would retaliate with "a barrage of artillery of similar intensity." Whatever the merits or demerits of such a plan, what conceivable purpose can be served by telling the North Koreans

Hours after the Lockerbie atrocity, Mrs Thatcher was wading through the carnage wrought by terrorists over a small Scottish town, paying her condolences to the bereaved. It had been a long and harrowing day, but when she arrived back in London late that night she still found time to phone me at home. Her voice was anxious, kind. She asked: ‘How is Ray, dear?’ The day before, my husband had suffered a serious accident and Mrs Thatcher had been characteristically solicitous, offering her car to run me home.

The two Obama supporters traveled to the communist country ostensibly to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary and tour the city of Havana, but their trip has sparked criticism by some Republicans and speculation that it might have violated U.S. law.(Snip) White House press secretary Jay Carney deferred questions on Monday about the Beyoncé trip to Treasury. White House officials have decided to go ahead with annual garden tours this year despite sequester cuts, an official familiar with the decision tells POLITICO. Tours of the White House itself remained canceled because the cuts have left Secret Service short on manpower to staff them. But there will be enough agents to staff the garden tours, the official said. The tours are slated to happen this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guests will be able to view the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, Rose Garden and South Lawn of the White House,

Arizona Gov. Janice Brewer has signed a law providing strong new restrictions on the use of so-called "seclusion rooms" in schools – closet-sized rooms where children with behavioral disabilities such as autism were being locked up as punishment. "It is chilling to imagine an Arizona school child being shut away in a padded room, no larger than a closet, for hours on end," Brewer said after signing the law Friday. "There has to be a better way." With the new law, Arizona will join more than 30 other states that impose rules on the restraint of students in public schools.

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”
