Australian boy´s egg collection
turns into nest of deadly snakes

A 3-year-old Australian boy was lucky to escape uninjured after a collection of eggs he found in his yard hatched into a slithering tangle of deadly snakes. Reptile specialist Trish Prendergast said Friday that young wildlife enthusiast Kyle Cummings could have been killed if he had handled the eastern brown snakes -- the world´s most venomous species on land after Australia´s inland taipan. Kyle found a clutch of nine eggs a few weeks ago in the grass on his family´s 3-acre property on the outskirts of the city of Townsville in Queensland state, Prendergast said.

This is kind of scary. A friend of mine who grew up as an ex-pat in the middle east tells of finding a snake when he was young and taking it home. He put it in a box and was showing the other kids when the snake reared up and its neck flared; it was a sand cobra. The snake didn´t bite anyone and was fairly calm while he has capturing it. I´m not sure this particular snake was lucky enough to be "released into the wild".

Guess I will be a target for PETA but I would have ended those seven deadly snakes before they could bite anyone.

Dittos to what poster #2 said. Up until a couple of years ago, I lived in a very rural area. Rattlesnakes & copperheads were sent to reptile Valhalla! Non-venomous snakes were left alone.

I think that this woman was out of her mind letting her 3 year old keep those eggs. In a drawer yet.

When I relayed this story to my spouse, he said that God´s angels must have been surrounding this house. There is no other explanation for surviving a nest of deadly brown snakes.

Found a small copperhead under some clothes in my bedroom several months ago. My wife kept an eye on him while I went for a nine iron. We have blacksnakes in the attic and around the barn as well as garter snakes here and there. Only the non-poisonous ones are welcome.

D.C. shift: Gun control to threat detection

After an Iraq War veteran took the lives of three other people at Fort Hood on Wednesday, President Barack Obama, Pentagon officials and others in Washington agreed more must be done to spot “insider threats” before they strike. But what almost no one is saying: change gun laws. The Fort Hood attack is the latest in a string of mass shootings, from the Navy Yard attack in September to a shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin the year before, where the response from Washington has shifted from guns – to the shooters who wield them. The push now is

ST. LOUIS— A band of severe weather stretched across a swath of the Midwest and South on Thursday, with hailstorms in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas following a small tornado in suburban St. Louis. Storms slammed the North Texas college city of Denton with hail as large as baseballs, leading to reports of broken windows and other damage. The National Weather Service in Tulsa noted reports of hail up to the size of ping pong balls and strong wind gusts. Arkansas saw one-inch hail, and falling tree limbs knocked out power in western parts of the state. Forecasters said the unsettled

David Letterman is irreplaceable, but someone must step into his shoes in 2015 to take the reigns. In the spirit of CBS’ long-running late night talk show, here’s our own Top Ten list of people who should replace Letterman: 10. Jon Stewart — The host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” has long been considered a favorite to take over Letterman’s gig. 9. Chris Rock — Arguably one of the funniest comedians on the planet, and he’s already hosted his own HBO show in the past. 8. Conan O’Brien — He’s got the chops. He’s got the talent. Washington– It appears the George Washington Bridge controversy that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie´s been dealing with back home in the Garden State hasn´t affected his standing nationally as one of the Republican Party´s most potent fundraising rainmakers. The Republican Governors Association announced Thursday that the group has raised a record $23.5 million the first three months of this year, and $33 million since Christie took over as RGA chairman in late November. That´s a new fundraising record for the first four and a half months of a new RGA chairman´s tenure. The $23.5 million raised in this year´s first

For a family that has been vocal about disliking the media, the Palins sure have participated in a fair amount of TV shows. Continuing that tradition, Sarah Palin stars in “Amazing America with Sarah Palin,” premiering Thursday night on the Sportsman Channel. The docu-series follows the former Alaska governor/vice presidential candidate around the country as she and a crew explore “people, places and pastimes connected to America’s outdoor lifestyle.” This is just the latest in a long line of TV shows for the Palins — perhaps not unexpectedly, several have had their share of controversy attached. Suddenly the subject of income inequality has turned into a global love train. Politicians and public-policy shops all over the world are hopping onboard. Naturally the engineer is Barack Obama, who gives speeches on income inequality and won a presidential election by rolling over 1% of the population. Democrats in this year´s midterm elections are running on income inequality, and this is rational. Their alternatives don´t look attractive, despite ObamaCare´s seven million recruits. Less obvious is the linkage being made now between global warming and—what else?—income inequality. Or that the International Monetary Fund is moving income inequality to the top of

With the April 2 shooting at Ft. Hood--the second such shooting at that base in five years--it is important to remember that military gun-free zones were implemented under President Bill Clinton. As Breitbart News reported on September 17--the day after Aaron Alexis opened fire on unarmed personnel in the gun-free DC Navy Yard--military bases became gun free zones just months into Clinton´s presidency. To be fair, the original directive (5210.56) relating to military gun-free zones was issued during the last months of President George H.W. Bush´s presidency. Then, an implementing regulation (AR 190-14)--which clarified and revised 5210.56--was issued just months

With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.

The human kindling that makes up the flammable Republican base may soon burst into flames, again. Portions of that excitable cohort are looking — some with fawn-like eyes filled with hurt, others with sparks shooting from eyes narrowed like gun slits — askance at other Republicans urging Jeb Bush to seek the 2016 presidential nomination. A candidacy by Florida’s former governor would be desirable. But if Republicans want to avoid intra-party carnage, they should be very careful about doing what The Post recently reported: “Many of the Republican Party’s most powerful insiders and financiers have begun a behind-the-scenes campaign to draft

Do you think members of Congress are overpaid or underpaid? Most likely you’d go with the former, but Democratic congressman Jim Moran argues it’s actually the latter. In an interview with CQ Roll Call, Moran says, “I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid.” The House recently took up a bill to freeze members’ paychecks, placing another halt on the annual cost-of-living pay increases they would normally get and keeping annual salary at $174,000.
