Paul Ryan Vanishes In Fiscal Cliff Talks

WASHINGTON — When Rep. Paul Ryan appeared on the House floor Thursday evening to ferry Republicans´ sequester replacement bill to a mostly symbolic passage, it was the the most famous House Republican´s first, brief moment in the spotlight during negotiations to avert the fiscal cliff. On Monday evening, those negotiations were heating up anew: President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner had met earlier at the White House, where Obama presented Boehner with his latest counteroffer.

I guess Rebecca didn´t watch Ryan eviscerate the stupid ´Rat at the end of the debate. Nice try, Becky (may I call you that?) you can, like, you-tube it, or like, go to C-Span, or like, read the following comments on this thread.

Ryan´s absence tells me he was not totally on board with Plan B. Now that its failed, we might look to Ryan as Speaker.

If Paul Ryan could not best Joe Biden in a debate, he has no business even dreaming of being Speaker of the House. Boehner is going a good job pushing the Pelosi plan. To the few of us paying attention, it´s making Dear Leader´s position appear unreasonable.

I assume that he will run for Speaker of the new Congress and I believe he will win. There s no reason to trash a feloow Republica who supported your rise in the House and run for the VP

#4: He did best the giggling maniac in the debate. Unless you didn´t watch it and got the "analysis" from MSNBCNNABCBS. Or the NY Times. The fact that Biden was aggressive made the base go nuts. But he was a psycho.

Boehner is not doing well, IMO, but I´ll be honest, I could be reacting to the media spin. I´d love to see Ryan as speaker. He says what he means and means what he says.

Reply 7 - Posted by: navybrat, 12/20/2012 9:13:00 PM     (No. 9076891)

Hopefully, if Boehner will not resign as speaker he will be voted down. If Ohio keeps electing him we cannot stop that, but we can vote in enough conservations that he will not have a leadership position since he has proven that he is NO leader.

Ryan is completely ineffective. He didn´t win the debate against Biden, and he didn´t even win his home state of Wisconsin for the GOP ticket in the presidential election. I find him to be a spoiled, incompetent congressional retard (like the rest of them).

This will be a miserable disaster no matter what adjustments. Why have Republican fingerprints all over it? "I had such a wonderful program to give everthjng to all of you and those evil people destroyed it ."

#8, I wonder what you base your criticism of Rep.Ryan on? He´s been my Congressman since the 90´s and a harder worker and more sincere man you could not find! When he is back in Wisconsin, he is tireless, with town hall meetings, countless meet and greets. We have always wondered how he keeps up? And no one has put their heart and soul into working out a meaningful, long-term budget plan. I think that Boehner is taking the flak for now so that Ryan can run again for higher office. Just my opinion.

#4, you say "to the few of us paying attention" and that´s the reason why the ploy of supporting Pelosi´s plan is worse than meaningless. The people you hope to woo with this strategy do not listen to you. They listen to the MSM who will say whatever democrats tell them to say. The point was already made that Obama and Reid will support nothing and force us over the "fiscal cliff" when Obama said he would veto Pelosi´s plan. Why carry the ploy further? Republicans should not jump first without even grabbing the Democrats hands before committing political suicide. What this should be about is cutting taxes and spending.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Texas mother claims a quiz her son took blamed the United States for the September 11, 2001 attacks. Kara Sands posted on her Facebook page earlier this month a quiz her fifth-grade son at Flour Bluff Intermediate School took after watching a video entitled “Remembering September 11th.” One of the questions on the quiz asked “Why might the United States be a target for terrorism?” with the correct answer being “Decisions we made in the United States have had negative effects on people elsewhere.”

Seven U.S. Marines were killed and at least seven wounded when a mortar exploded during a live-fire training exercise overnight at an Army munitions depot in the Nevada desert, military officials told NBC News. There were conflicting reports about what happened. According to one account, a 60-millimeter mortar shell exploded in a tube as Marines were preparing to fire it. Another account said that the shell exploded as Marines were picking it up to load it. The accident happened at Hawthorne Army Depot, a 147,000-acre ammunition storage and training facility just east of the California line.

10 Things That Are Simpler Than

The draft application for health insurance under Obamacare is out, and it´s long — 21 pages, to be exact. That´s close to ten times longer than an individual tax return, and significantly longer than an application for citizenship or a federal housing loan. It´s even longer than an application to establish a bank. The sheer complexity of the application is likely to spawn a cottage industry of Obamacare preparers, the Washington Post speculates. Which means a potential new addition to healthcare expenses: the cost of paying someone to help you apply.

If only American soldiers in Afghanistan were unemployed Democratic voters in Chicago, then they might be getting three square meals a day from the government. But the military is the one place that Obama feels comfortable slashing expenses. While spending at an uncontrollable rate unseen since the last days of the Roman Empire in every other area, Obama has been cutting “waste” in the military like 20,000 Marines, Tricare healthcare for veterans and breakfast for soldiers serving in areas where he would only venture accompanied by heavy firepower. Maybe it was the dual bubble windshields, perfectly framing the heads of Adam West and Burt Ward as they raced to the Gotham City crime scene. Or maybe it was the flared bat wings, edged in orange. Or perhaps it was the ultimate jet exhaust, which flamed like a dragon as the caped crusaders raced out of the Bat Cave. Whatever the reasons, the original Batmobile remains one of the most revered cars in America. And now the Batmobile – yes the very same one used on the 1960s Adam West TV show – is among the more than 1,400 cars expected to be auctioned off at the the 42nd annual

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Demoralized Republicans arrived in Boston Wednesday night for a rare moment in American politics: They came to learn from Democrats. Barack Obama´s campaign schooled Mitt Romney’s in November, something of which the Republicans who gathered at the quadrennial, off-the-record Harvard Institute of Politics Campaign Managers Conference were intensely aware. And while the proceedings of the event are under embargo until the institute releases audio transcripts of the proceedings, some participants shared their reactions.

This haunting collection of images shows what it would look like if the ghosts of World War II returned to our streets. The remarkable pictures overlay modern scenes from France with atmospheric photographs taken in the same place during the war. Historical expert Jo Teeuwisse, from Amsterdam, began the project after finding 300 old negatives at a flea market in her home city depicting familiar places in a very different context. She researched the background to each of the most interesting finds and created a beautiful series of pictures by super-imposing the old pictures on top of new ones.

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that
