I´ve been no fan of Boehner´s approach. Given the circumstances, however, the House should pass it as above posters suggest, and adjourn - with instruction to members to be on standby so that the House could immediately be called back into session should Reid pass something in the Senate (which, of course, he won´t). Yes, it´s a step back on principle, but as Lenin often said about one step backward ..

Remember that perfect is the enemy of the good - or the "least bad" in this case. Even the best fighting units must occasionally fall back.

It protects all the conservative points while leaving those making a million or more unprotected. Even Nordquist is grudgingly accepting.

Obama has scored a great deal of points by keeping the argument all about millionaire, now its going to make him look petty when he ignores this offer. Its way too late to bring up their objections. And Reid intends to ignore anything passed by the House.

This looks like as good an approach as one can hope for: Pass a decent bill in the House and throw it right back at the Democrats.

The plan is great, the strategy stinks. I´m all for passing the plan and going home, if you´ve made the public aware of what you´ve done. Boehner spent 55 seconds yesterday at his news conference rebutting Obama. 99% of the public has no clue what Plan B is. They probably think it´s a movie. Republicans need to pass this in the House and then go out campaign style and sell it. Otherwise they lose. When it fails in the Senate, taxes go up, Reid gloats and Obama demagogues ad nauseum.

Isn´t it grand. Boehner has to fight the democrats,s the msm, and of course, the purity pals on the right. Add to that the purity knowit all punidts on talk radio too.

I´m not sure what the unhappy posters expect from a 2012 lame-duck session House Majority Leader, whether it´s John Boehner or John Doe. The Democrats control the Senate and the White House. There are no winning GOP strategies in this situation. There is only a less-than-terrible strategy. Yes, Boehner could stand resolute and refuse to negotiate. To what end? I salute him for passing as good a deal as possible and leaving the result on the Senate doorstep.

High time to stop being led around by the nose by the Commiecrats on Capitol Hill. Pass a cut and go home.

I expected Boner to know that Obama and the Senate would not cooperate and regardless of what happened the GOP would be blamed. This is politics 101.

So the "negotiations" were always a farce and everybody knew it. Instead of putting a stake in ground and stating that the GOP stands for cutting the deficit with spending cuts and tax cuts, he kept blubbering and now his plan B is a tax increase. What a brilliant strategy - let´s cave after being played the fool.

Let´s not forget his purge of those that actually want to cut spending from committees. He is no more a leader than the keyboard I´m using to type this.

The problem is many on both sides do not ever read the bills or and weigh the circumstances making them equally misinformed and only able to fall back on gut check ideas.
When the mess can´t be resolved in one beautiful brilliant sweep then protecting the public from killing taxes and more loss of personal finances must come first--- then tackle the rest.
Obe is counting on pig headed thinking to both raise taxes and spending. One defeat and he will seek revenge but will also have lost his momentum.

I cannot listen to Hannity or Limbaugh because they spend so much time bashing Boehner , when Obama and the Democrats are the problem.
Let them get elected and then negotiate with Obama and see how easy it is.

and the media , Boehner´s realistic options are few.
We just lost 8 seats in the House , so the Republican
margin of control is even smaller and nationally
Democrat House members received almost a million
more votes than Republicans.
The purity squad and the right wing talkers are
going to continue to join with the Democrats and the media and run down everything the Republicans do.

Hannity is no longer a registered Republican , yet, all he does is bash Republicans for not doing what " he " demands.

Frankly, I´ve watched the GOP disintegrate since G H Bush. Their only hope was the rise of the Tea Party

The important thing to keep in mind is that the tax cuts for income below $1 million would be permanent. Sooner or later, there will be a GOP president and Congress to lower the top rate and make that permanent, too. In the meantime, when the expected income from the top rate increase fails to materialize and the deficit and debt continue to rise, Dems will not be able to try to make up the difference by raising taxes on people making less than $1 million.

And with the "automatic expiration" nonsense behind us, I doubt very much that Dems will be able to raise the top rate any farther, especially when Americans see how little the "millionaire tax" raised and if economic growth slows.

Then spending will be the sole issue and there, with debt approaching the debt ceiling and Dems unable to raise the it without the House, Boehner and the GOP will have the upper hand.

Don´t know what to make of Boehner. Some days I like him, some days I don´t. But today, I do. Given the hand he´s been dealt, he really did come up with something much better than I expected. Now he can walk away and the ball is in the Dems´ court.

"Purity squad"? I see the forces of reasoned moderation have a new catch phrase. Perhaps a more persuasive approach would begin by recognizing the truth in conservatives´ misgivings. Obama needs to raise taxes on rich people to appease the lunatic looters who make up his political base. Helping him do that strengthens Obama and weakens the Republicans by diluting their anti-tax message, none of which will do a blessed thing to solve the fiscal crisis. Obama is bankrupting our country with unsustainable government sending. The problem is appropriations, and it cannot be solved by any amount of expropriation.
