| SAN ANTONIO -- Christmastime is tamale time in South Texas, and Valerie Gonzalez is in the middle of another busy day at Delicious Tamales, the business she has owned for 30 years on San Antonio´s largely Latino west side. Moving quickly between answering the phone and greeting customers in English and in Spanish, she says that December is her busiest month when it comes to the steamed Mexican delicacy that is a holiday tradition among Hispanic families. Customer Jesse Villanueva, 54, of San Antonio, came to buy some for his family.

Initially a lot of work maybe, but when you check your freezer and see the ´gold´ there, and know that you can take some and cook them up fresh, oooooh baby! It is so worth it. #1 is right, anytime is tamale time.

I´m a gringo, and have made tamales several times over the past few years - always around Christmas. They´re yummy and good fun for the whole family. Lots of work though.

In Texas, you will often times find families of Hispanic heritage in the kitchen making tamales. Three, or even four, generations of women will be running the show, with the the Machismo men and children gladly taking orders for all the menial tasks involved -- knowing darn well what the ultimate reward will be.
And those tamales coming from those kitchens are the best in the world!!!

There is nothing like a homemade tamale made by an experienced Mexican cook. Wonderful.
They bear no relationship to the clumps of dry dough with a little tasteless or gravy-filled stuffing that characterize commercial tamales.

My granddaughter in Central California made 2000+ tamales with her high school band mates to finance their trip to march in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on New Years Day a few years ago.
She cannot look at a tamale now!

Growing up in San Antonio, a friend´s older female relatives would gather at his home and make tamales for a week. Literally thousands of tamales. Come New Years, they would move out of the house for three days. Then all of the friends and family would decend on the home and for those three days you couldn´t park your car within two blocks of the house.

Just as popular in Chicago as in Texas! I worked with a woman whose family must have spent all of December making tamales. She was among the few who worked the last week of the year and our lunches featured her family´s leftover tamales. I miss those tamales, and those coworkers (company folded years ago).

After being stationed in San Antonio off and on for 28+ years, I have spent the last fourteen searching and trying gringo tamales. I have almost given up and now I make King Ranch Chicken for Christmas Eve. I am going to order Delicious Tamales from San Antonio next year.
During those 28 years I worked (off and on) at the National Bank of Fort Sam Houston. For our in-house Christmas party the bank ordered and brought in probably 300 dozen beef and pork tamales for employees and any customers who happened in that day right before Christmas. I look back on those years with warm, fond memories.

White House officials have decided to go ahead with annual garden tours this year despite sequester cuts, an official familiar with the decision tells POLITICO. Tours of the White House itself remained canceled because the cuts have left Secret Service short on manpower to staff them. Arizona Gov. Janice Brewer has signed a law providing strong new restrictions on the use of so-called "seclusion rooms" in schools – closet-sized rooms where children with behavioral disabilities such as autism were being locked up as punishment. "It is chilling to imagine an Arizona school child being shut away in a padded room, no larger than a closet, for hours on end," Brewer said after signing the law Friday. "There has to be a better way." With the new law, Arizona will join more than 30 other states that impose rules on the restraint of students in public schools.

WASHINGTON— Virgin America did the best job for its customers among leading U.S. airlines last year, a report said Monday, as carriers overall had their second best performance in the more than the two decades since researchers began measuring quality of service. The U.S. Senate has confirmed Mary Jo White´s nomination as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, clearing the way for her to become the first former prosecutor to lead the agency that oversees Wall Street. White was swiftly approved Monday by a voice vote in the Senate. President Barack Obama nominated White for the job. She was the U.S. attorney in Manhattan from 1993 through 2002. She said in her confirmation hearing that she would aggressively pursue enforcement and hold individuals accountable for misconduct.

North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”
