The Times Embarrasses
Itself on Guns–Again!

Power Line, by John Hinderaker

Original Article

Posted By:Dreadnought, 12/18/2012 10:53:20 PM

It’s too bad the members of the New York Times editorial board don’t sign their editorials. If they did, we could ridicule them by name. The Times, as an institution, has chosen to place ideology above accuracy. That decision was on display yesterday when the paper editorialized–how many times is it now, one wonders?–against guns. The headline sums up the paper’s point: “In Other Countries, Laws Are Strict and Work.” America, in the view of the Times, is the ugly stepchild among the world’s nations

We protect our Mayors with men with guns; we protect our Governors with men with guns; We protect the House and the Senate and President, with men with guns; We protect our courts, our banks, our jewelry stores, our sports arenas, and our pawn shops, all with men with guns....

However, Our most precious possessions, our children we protect with a piece of paper and a sign(Guns Free Zone Law).

Now in response to the slaughter of 20 innocents, we propose to punish those (gun owners) who are innocent, and protect our most cherished possession, our children, with a another piece of paper (a new gun law).....

This is insanity...

Agree, #1.

We even have our "celebrities" protected by guns. Recall Rosie O´Donnell arguing with Tom Selleck about guns on her TV show, and we later found out Rosie´s own bodyguard carried a gun!

Oddly enough, when things are going horribly, horribly wrong, we frequently call....

....people with guns.

Odder still, those people with guns (and badges) usually don´t get there in time to prevent the carnage.

Why are there chalk outlines on the sidewalk?

Because the Police are usually five minutes away.

The left is obsessed with creating a culture of sitting ducks. The left thinks there´s never been a better time to wipe republicans off the map then now. So any issues coming up is going to be met by the swarm media pushing their absolutist theories.

I don´t have a problem with more through background checks but something like that isn´t good enough for the left.

#1 & #12 are right on and so are the rest. The only way to stop someone with a gun is for someone else with a gun to do it. The problem is today too few people conceal carry. We must be willing and able to stop evil doers from doing evil. Far too many of us are unwilling and unable to confront evil and rely on others to do that for us. Gun free zones are nothing but killing zones for those bent on harming others and doing evil. Evil does exist as we just saw in CT.

If they´re going to take away our guns, can they at least have the common courtesy to start with the inner city gang bangers?

They´re the ones committing 99+% of the gun violence, and their guns are unregistered and therefore already illegal.

Chuck Schumer had an unrestricted pistol permit.
Harry Reid carried "everywhere he went".
How about a sworn statement from every Congresscritter showing WHO carries what.
These jerks are going to make LAW to prevent us from owning guns, but be exempt, as they are with Obamacare?

Wasted breath... facts are irrelevant in the face of panic and widespread demands to "do something"...

Remember- we often ridicule the Left for empty gestures such as Ribbons and Vigils- things that have no tangible meaning, yet make the ribbon-wearer or candle-lighter feel as though they have "done something".

The Leftist elite- led by Obama - will now take advantage of the sheeps´ desire to "do something" by proposing Unconstitutional measures to restrict weapons, based on the emotional and fact-free editorials like that of the NYT...

I do not think I would get a permit to carry a gun now. I do not want the government donkeys to know it. I do not have a gun now because right arm and hand do not work right and have no strength in those appemdages. I live in a good neighborhood and don´t worry too much, but I would feel better if I had a lightweight gun available. Ask around and I bet you can get guns from other sources.

#1 nails it.

Laws will not STOP anybody from doing anything. They only justify society in punishing those who do break the laws, and hopefully keep us safer by taking the lawbreakers out of the general population.

But they can stop nothing. Just go out driving today and watch all the people who are speeding or punching through red lights right after the light changes. They are not stopped.

If merely passing a law makes that behavior stop we would not even be having this discussion since murder has been illegal in all civilized societies for centuries.

The left wants themselves protected but no protection or self defence for others. Many jurisdictions also outlaw pepper spray as a defence! What is the possible objection to that? People should be content to be robbed or killed and all means of defence should be outlawed, just wait till the police get there! Mark Levin featured clips of the hypocrites Harry Reid and Feinstein admitting they carry and have guns for self defence.

How many lives would have been saved if the principal had a gun locked up in her office?

Rosie O´Donnell raked Tom Selleck over the coals about guns. Her attitude was so nasty that she appeared to become red in the face. Then it was revealed her body guard had a "gun".

We are surrounded by hypocrites starting with Congress!
As a famous president once said "There you go again.....".The government is never going to stop with trying to control guns. And never stop trying to destroy our Constitution. Their shame is mighty.

The Newtown tragedy could only happen in a gun-free-zone. Liberals are proud to make the repositories of children gun-free-zones, (while humming Kumbaya). Then, when tragedy strikes at their gun-free-zone school, they blame innocent citizens down the street, who deliberately make their children’s home a safe, non-gun-free-zone.

As with stupid, you can’t fix Liberalism.

In the summer of 2011, at an island youth camp in Norway, we had the utopia of a gun-free zone.

When the deranged killer arrived, there were no guns to protect the innocent. 80 died in that totally gun-free environment.

Take guns away from law abiding citizens.
How is that going to stop criminals, including political criminals?

Anyone with common sense can think of dozens of ways criminals and the mentally ill can inflict severe harm on the public in gun-free zones.

The previous posters are correct. The objective of gun control is to remove guns from our society.

Why do we not hear anything about 50,000 people dying on the roads because of drunk drivers - drunk drivers without guns and innocent victims without guns, after all, highways should be gun free.

Answer: His fear of people (police officers) with GUNS!

Question: What lesson should we learn from this?
Answer: That people with guns are an amazingly effective deterrent.

As the holder of a concealed carry permit, I make sure I have a weapon on me when I go to certain areas and events. I could not live with myself if I were involved in a situation where some criminal or idiot decided to kill innocent people and I had no ability to at least try and prevent it. On the other hand, the day I got my permit, I realized the sober responsibilities of carrying a concealed weapon, and that the day I have to use it will be the worst day of my life. As a result, I am determined to do ANYTHING I can before resorting to drawing my weapon and using it. And guess what? That´s the attitude of the vast MAJORITY of those of us who have CCPs. But to the libs, I am, by definition, "unstable" and a danger to society. Bring it on libs: let´s see you try and disarm 45-55 million Americans. You are going to need a very large military/police force to do so.

* In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. This doesn´t include the 30 million ´Uncle Joe´ starved to death in the Ukraine.

* In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

* Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, leaving a populace unable to defend itself against the Gestapo and SS. Hundreds of thousands died as a result.

* China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

* Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

* Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. The total dead are said to be 2-3 million

* Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, 1-2 million ´educated´ people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

* Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million at a bare minimum.

I´d suggest a 12 gauge shotgun in the principals offices in every US school. Oh, it would shoot low-recoil bean bag shells, if anyone gets incoherent over the mere idea of a shotgun in a school. IF the principal doesn´t seem like the type of person who could handle such a device, that´s a big part of your problem right there. Reality says even an unloaded shotgun, drastically revises the mental script of a criminal. I´d also suggest a ´last stand´ Taser for each classroom teacher. They would be limited to 15 feet or so, but it would be better than a lock or window that could be breached. Again, if it seems like they can´t handle the responsibility, that school has a problem.

As for the times and the barking sheeple who think disarming law abiding neighbors is a great idea, compare Vermont and New York state. NY is a gun control advocates dream and VT their worst nightmare. Been that way for decades. Compare crime, advocates, NYT, I dare you.

Let me give you this hypothesis: What if the 27-year-old kindergarten teacher - who is rightfully being hailed as a hero for using her body to try to shield her students from the gunman - had instead pulled a pistol from her purse and shot the gunman dead before he could harm anyone in the classroom? Would she still be hailed a hero or castigated as a reckless gun owner?

Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators. The Obama administration said Friday that it would block Iran’s nominee as ambassador to the United Nations from entering the United States, setting up a new confrontation with Tehran just as relations with the Islamic republic appeared to be improving. The decision to bar entry to the diplomat, who was allegedly involved in the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, followed intense political pressure on the administration from Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill. But it also marked a rare instance in which Washington has effectively vetoed another country’s preferred choice as envoy to the United Nations. Iran

Struggling homeowners across the country could face significant new tax bills if they receive mortgage relief from their banks, a prospect that threatens to slow the housing recovery and put further strain on distressed borrowers. The collapse of the housing market and plunging home prices left millions of people stuck owing more on their mortgages than their homes were worth. Some have worked with their banks to reduce the loan amount to avoid foreclosure or enable a sale. In 2007, Congress adopted a law that spared those homeowners from being taxed on the amount of the loan that was forgiven. But

The House Oversight Committee has voted to hold former IRS subpotentate Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress, while the House Ways and Means Committee has referred her case to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution. The facts in the case suggest very strongly that Ms. Lerner has earned the contempt of the American people as well as criminal prosecution to the full extent of the law. The question of whether Justice will do justice now rests with the Obama administration, in service to which Ms. Lerner organized and oversaw the repression of nonprofit activists under color of IRS authority. That

Another day, another chronicle of Democratic Party malfeasance. Enjoy: In Congress, Rep. Darrell Issa of California has just leveled an explosive charge against his Democrat counterpart on the House Oversight and Government Reform committee — to wit, that the gentleman from Maryland colluded with the IRS to harass a conservative organization fighting for honest elections: Issa said records obtained last week from the IRS show communications from the office of ranking member Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., about True the Vote, a Texas-based, non-profit conservative group that aims to prevent voter fraud. The communications at one point involved Lois Lerner, the ex-IRS

With the rocky rollout of his health care law in a post-deadline lull, President Obama will move this week to shake up his health care team, accepting the resignation of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and tapping his budget director as a troubleshooting replacement, the White House confirmed Thursday. Mrs. Sebelius, a former Kansas governor who has served as HHS secretary for Mr. Obama’s entire tenure, was the president’s point person as his signature law stumbled out of the blocks in October. Despite calls for her to be fired, Mrs. Sebelius stayed on the job to oversee a

A few weeks ago, with no notice, the U.S. government intercepted Mary Grice’s tax refunds from both the IRS and the state of Maryland. Grice had no idea that Uncle Sam had seized her money until some days later, when she got a letter saying that her refund had gone to satisfy an old debt to the government — a very old debt. When Grice was 4, back in 1960, her father died, leaving her mother with five children to raise. Until the kids turned 18, Sadie Grice got survivor benefits from Social Security to help feed and clothe them.

Two months ago, a petition bearing more than 110,000 signatures was delivered to The Post, demanding a ban on any article questioning global warming. The petition arrived the day before publication of my column, which consisted of precisely that heresy. The column ran as usual. But I was gratified by the show of intolerance because it perfectly illustrated my argument that the left is entering a new phase of ideological agitation — no longer trying to win the debate but stopping debate altogether, banishing from public discourse any and all opposition. The proper word for that attitude is totalitarian. It

Attorney General Eric Holder must be suffering from a sort of amnesia. He is upset at supposed divisiveness and rudeness directed at him when testifying before Congress, and suggests not too subtly that he and President Obama have been accorded inordinately harsh treatment (fill in the blanks why). Aside from the fact that he seemed to have relished the combat with Representative Gohmert in quite unprofessional tones (“you don’t want to go there, buddy, alright?”/ “good luck with your asparagus”), he seems to forget what former attorney general Alberto Gonzales once endured both in the liberal media and before Democrats

Who throws a shoe? Honestly! That would be 36-year-old Alison Ernst of Phoenix, Arizona, who was charged Thursday night with disorderly conduct by the Las Vegas Police Department after allegedly throwing a shoe at former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. According to NBC News, who spoke with a Secret Service official, the U.S. Attorney’s office has declined federal prosecution. Ernst was wearing shoes on Thursday night when she attended a speech Clinton was giving in Las Vegas, but apparently brought an extra one specifically to throw at the former secretary of state. The official said the incident appeared to be “premeditated.”

Many Americans have been watching with great consternation the ongoing struggle between the Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Marshals against Cliven Bundy and his family. There are no signs of either side relinquishing their position. Many onlookers have been informed that this dispute is over protecting the desert tortoise. But it is nothing of the sort. In fact, the reality of the dispute goes far underneath what is being talked about. The more appropriate source of the dispute is ground water as well as surface water -- this is a war over water. Legislatures are in a far better position than judges to assess the

A Nevada cattle rancher appears to have won his week-long battle with the federal government over a controversial cattle roundup that had led to the arrest of several protesters. Cliven Bundy went head to head with the Bureau of Land Management over the removal of hundreds of his cattle from federal land, where the government said they were grazing illegally. Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) is now accusing the Keystone pipeline of being a cancer risk. Her first point was that the pipeline “will bring 830,000 barrels of dirty tar sands oil into our nation every day.” She then segued to point #2 by asserting that the heavy tar sands oil will put people who live near refineries at risk for cancer: Significantly higher levels of dangerous air pollutants and carcinogens have been documented downwind from tar sands refineries, and in these areas people are suffering higher rates of the types of cancers linked to these toxic chemicals, including leukemia and

President Obama stood Friday with the Rev. Al Sharpton and accused Republicans of trying to keep millions of Americans from voting, in a fiery speech days after new revelations about Sharpton’s past as an FBI informant. “The right to vote is threatened today in a way that it has not been since the Voting Rights Act became law nearly five decades ago,” Obama told the annual convention of Sharpton’s National Action Network in Manhattan. Obama’s appearance represented a presidential seal of approval of Sharpton’s role as a civil rights activist, amid the new revelations about how Sharpton used a wire to record

Let me obliterate a bit of confusion here: the Obama administration attempted to go to war with a rancher in Nevada. Let me amplify a little bit of truth: They tucked tail and have returned home. And let me add a bit of clarity: they had no choice! As the nation began to become familiar with the plight of the family of Cliven Bundy, many of us harkened back to another standoff in which the Federal government attempted to bully it´s outcome: Waco, Texas and the Branch Davidian massacre. It is telling that in the Nevada case the feds pulled out so

Say what you will about Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), but they know a train wreck when they see it. They also know when to separate themselves from the cranks and the losers on the right. Although both supported the shutdown and were heartily supported by tea party groups in their own Senate races, neither one has endorsed Matt Bevin in Kentucky, Milton Wolf in Kansas or Chris McDaniel in Mississippi. In fact, Cruz’s office confirms he hasn’t endorsed anyone in the primaries. He may weigh in after the primaries. Rand Paul has endorsed two very establishment

A brazen flash mob has been caught on camera storming a California store and making off with $20,000 worth of sunglasses. Surveillance footage shows eight women piling into a Sunglass Hut and crowding around display cases. Shielding workers from what they´re doing, they quickly stuff dozens of fashion specs into their bags. A store clerk pleads with them to stop, before running out of the shot to get help and dial 911. The thieves then all bolt outside and escape in a waiting SUV. The incident occurred at the Valencia Town Center mall, in Santa Clarita, at 3 p.m. on

President Obama labeled complaints about voter fraud “bogus” and accused Republicans of cynically trying to prevent Americans from accessing the polls in a fiery speech Friday at a civil rights forum hosted by Al Sharpton. Obama argued that attempts in some states to impose new voter identification restrictions were actually efforts by Republicans to make “it harder, not easier to vote.” And the president said that while voter fraud should be prevented, it rarely occurred. “So let´s be clear, the real voter fraud is the people who try to deny our rights by making bogus arguments about voter fraud,” Obama said. It’s hardly been a secret that in recent years the moderate center of the Democrat party has been driven away and what remains is a conglomeration of disparate blocs which, to date, the party has been able to treat as if there were no conflicting interests between them. As the midterm elections approach and the administration’s incompetence, along with the distaste for the president’s signature ObamaCare legislation, drive the party’s chances down further, the make-believe coalition of opposites may well crumble if the opposition doesn’t blow it. Democrats hope to retain control of the Senate and recapture the House by driving

The last rancher in southern Nevada has won his battle to graze cows on public land after a week-long stand off with federal agents. The Bureau of Land Management today said it would stop trying to seize the cattle of Cliven Bundy after armed militia members today continuing to gather in Nevada in a confrontation with federal agents. BLM Director Neil Kornze said: ´Based on information about conditions on the ground, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of
