´Give me a break´ - Tarantino tires of defending ultra-violent films after Sandy Hook massacre

| In the wake of Friday’s shootings at a school in Connecticut which left 26 dead, arts events across America were cancelled. But director of ultra-violent film Django Unchained went ahead with a press junket on Saturday, and went on to remark that he is tired of defending his films every time American is rocked by gun violence. Speaking in New York Quentin Tarantino said: “I just think you know there´s violence in the world, tragedies happen, blame the playmakers. It´s a western. Give me a break."
|
Comments: Give us a break, will you? Tarantino´s films are disgusting.

What people don´t seem to get is that movies are still affected by the free market. No one will be forced to see Tarantino´s gore fest. So the solution is not to see it. I´ll have no problem not ignoring it myself.

I´m torn on this one. I thought his last movie, "Inglorious B***erds," was a skillfully-made piece of idiotic rubbish. And I get the same vibe off of "Django Unchained," so will avoid it. I hate when people rewrite history to suit their own fantasies. But I´m kind of with him when it comes to blaming movies for things like the Newtown killing. I blame the guy with the gun and the people who should have been watching him, and the people who insisted that all schools be situated in gunfree zone fantasylands, as if announcing that you´re defenseless will keep bad guys away.
I do put violent video games in a different category, though. I think that actually blowing away realistic-looking people is a different experience, especially for a still-developing young mind, than just watching a violent movie. And yes, I know that most people who play violent video games don´t become serial killers. But I can guarantee that 100 percent of the people who play violent video games could come up with a much more productive way to spend their time.

Only one out of a million violent movie fans actually goes on to shoot up a school or theater or the Clackamas Town Center Mall. Besides, Tarantino et al. make a lot of money. No worries.

Ack. Coffee not in my system yet. I wrote "not seeing it" first, then replaced the phrase with "ignoring it" and didn´t erase the "not".
I´ll have no problem ignoring it. I think the last Tarantino film I saw was part of Pulp Fiction, and it was on t.v. David Lynch´s work holds my attention better.

To me,it´s not the guns or gore in this movie that bothers me it´s the possibility of inciting racial violence that does. I agree that movies, video games and the like are scapegoats a lot of the time but even if you sanitize everything, there´s still kooks out there doing damage.

Maybe Tarantino can figure out a way to keep the addle-pated patrons out of his movies. But an IQ test won´t hack it. The past few shooters have been A-students.

#2, agreed, in part.
It isn´t just Tarantino-type violent films; it´s everything in the culture that elevates death and killing and cheapens human life, whether it´s abortion, gangland killings, computer games, violent cop-killer music or art which depicts blood and gore. It seems the gorier, the better stirs the blood lust so many human beings already have plugged into their DNA which is programmed out during childhood ("Don´t hit your brother, don´t punch your sister, etc.")
But because of the fragile balance between civilized behavior and rage, human beings are easily re-programmed by the culture to lapse back into violence. ("Lord of the Flies" comes to mind.)
Our culture is permeated with violent images everywhere and life is cheap. Look how easily an adolescent boy or girl will kill for a pair of sneakers. That behavior doesn´t come out of a vacuum.
Left unaddressed is that there is little punishment for crimes which leads to a certain fearlessness on the part of people already prone to violence. People are given slaps on the wrist or exonerated on a legal technicality.
In short, America´s culture is violent with the exception of pockets of peace such as churches (no guarantees there, either), synagogues and solitary people trying to escape the violence and gov´t interference.

I don´t go to the movies any more, or rarely do. First, there is no reality to them, pure bunk. Second, the actors are idiots, their personal lives are off the wall ignorant of all that is good. I see no reason to watch something that disagrees with everything I believe. If everyone did this, ZERO problem. Hollywood types are fools! Can´t manage their personal lives, but try to control society. They think they are brilliant! nOT!

I am happy that he told the gun violence whiners to go pound sand. I think it is totally phony when hollywood types pretend to be sensitive. I love Tarantino movies. His casting, music scores and writing are outstanding. And his films are totally original. And I have never heard him utter a peep about politics. I wasn´t happy about the drivel from the mouth of Foxx, but Kerry Washington is in the film. Wasn´t she the one who was supporting Romney. I can´t wait to see this movie.

Seeing as this man makes his living off of senseless violence, what else would you expect? Actually, if you took the drugs, sex and violence out of hollywood productions, they would have nothing to offer. No acting, no plot, no beautiful scenery. Just ugliness.

".. his films are totally original"
Or not. Part of Tarantino´s appeal to the critics is he´s always doing "homages". He takes derivative material, slaps on his creepy, hipster doofus dialog; exploits his ugly gift for fresh and new violence; rinses and repeats. His legacy will be thinner than his moments in the spotlight would indicate.
He´s a dork with tunnel-visioned darkness and a certain gift for formulaic film making. It´s scary to consider what road he might have traveled without that gift. He´s no genius, he´s no hero.

According to Aristotle, the spectacle -which includes special effects- is the lowest form of artistic expression. The ancient Greek tragedians composed plays full of violence and horror. The actual violence was seldom depicted on stage.
What people like this rather stupid sounding movie maker refuse to understand is that the artistic use of violence does not require its elaborate and realistic representation to thrill the audience by means of spectacle that far exceeds in gore anything the Roman gladiatorial games offered.
The gruesome pornographic celebration of violence in mass entertainment is nothing but spectacle and bait for thrill seekers. Like sex, violence sells. Sex and violence together can make performers and producers rich enough to be in the One Per Cent.
And while it is unquestionably true that the vast majority of children exposed to violent movies, video games and rap lyrics do not kill anyone -spree murders are so rare as to be almost statistically insignificant- it does not follow that they are not harmed in some way by such material. All art, said John Ruskin, is either instruction or infection. He did not consider that some art might be both.
The problem with the free market approach -if you don´t like it, don´t buy a ticket- is of course that this doesn´t mean others won´t expose themselves to it, nor that the consequences of such exposure,, however rare, cannot affect one. It is doubtful, for example, that any of the victims of the Sandy Hook mass murderer were regularly exposed to extremely violent entertainment.
Mr. Tarantino -who sounds like an unbelievably ignorant jerk- wants Americans to give HIM a break? I suggest that he consider giving US a break. Tone down the spectacular violence. It is neither necessary for the story nor edifying for the audience.

I thought Sam Peckinpaw (no idea how to spell his name)movies were too violent, most of the movies we took our son to see were pretty much nothing but explosions. I don´t watch movies anymore unless they´re old ones on DVD. I like to play Mario Brothers, but Mr. Cow and the Calf occasionally like to just kill things and blow things up in their games of choice. There have always been crazy people out there who snap and kill as many people as possible. This is a mental health issue and has nothing to do with movies, games, the coarsening of the culture or owning guns, it´s all about nuts and their inablility to cope. Mrs. Cow

I think there is too much violence and blood in much entertainment, even tv procedurals. It´s a form of pornography.
The problem is a little might be OK, but too much starts to bend you, and a few people get all twisted up. And then guys like Tarantino don´t even realize that´s what they´re doing.
Quentin babe, you can dial it back and still do the art side, and then it´s the art that people judge you on. Violence is almost always wink wink nudge nudge kind of stuff, you know that. Otherwise you move it offstage, it can even still be in the story.

Let’s face it. The Great Gatsby never has been—and probably won’t ever be—successfully turned into a great motion picture. Many have tried (four flop movies, not to mention various small-screen attempts, including a truncated but memorable Playhouse 90 with Robert Ryan and Jeanne Crain in the golden days when TV still knew what quality programming was). Robert Redford was a perfect Gatsby in the pretty but boring 1974 version by Jack Clayton, but the movie was dead on arrival. The best I’ve seen is still Elliott Nugent’s black-and-white 1949 version, with Alan Ladd at the top of his form

It may go down as one of the great currency bets in Australian dollar history – a $US1 billion gamble on a Reserve Bank rate cut that has delivered a $US19 million ($18.65m) profit in 36 hours. The beneficiary, if you believe the rumour mill, is investment legend George Soros. U.S. President Barack Obama gives the commencement address to the graduating class of The Ohio State University at Ohio Stadium on May 5, 2013 in Columbus, Ohio. PRESIDENT OBAMA: Unfortunately, you´ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that´s at the root of all our problems. Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They´ll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices.

After months of weighing potential candidates, President Obama finally has his pick for the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees the housing giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Obama wants to tap Representative Mel Watt, a Democrat from North Carolina. Confirmation is far from a sure thing. Watt’s nomination has been met with cheers by many groups that work with borrowers, from the National Community Reinvestment Coalition to MoveOn.org, though some liberals say he’s too close with banks, which are a big part of North Carolina’s economy.

When I was thirty, I was living my dream. I’d already accomplished most of what I’d set out to achieve professionally: leading scorer in the NBA, leading rebounder, leading blocker, Most Valuable Player, All-Star. But success can be as blinding as Bill Walton’s finger in the eye when battling for a rebound. I made mistakes. Plenty of them. In fact, sometimes I wish I could climb into a time machine and go back to shake some sense into that thirty-year-old me. If I could, here’s the advice I would give him: 1. Be more outgoing. A series of official White House photographs brought together by Vanity Fair show the ´lean-back´ nature of Barack Obama´s presidency. The pictures reveal that Mr Obama often exhibits relaxed body language in stressful situations, with legs crossed and a knee raised. Most noticeable of all, the president often has his feet up on his desk. But this is not just any desk - the Resolute desk was given to President Rutherford B. Hayes by Queen Victoria in 1880. (Snip) Yet whether they are debating tragic events or vital economic policy, the president is often more reclined than those around him.

A chart of the crashing price of gold looks like a wedding ring rolling off a table. Gold futures for June delivery closed at $1,361 an ounce on the Comex in New York today, a drop of more than $200 in two sessions. Gold’s fall of 13 percent since April 11 was the biggest two-session decline since 1980. Why is gold plunging? The most important factor is that global inflation is falling, reducing gold’s value as a hedge against rising prices. Gold bugs who were betting on an outburst of inflation are scrambling to reverse their bets

The US is to send distinctly low-key official representation to Lady Thatcher´s funeral on Wednesday, with a delegation led by George Shultz and James Baker, who both served as US secretary of state while Thatcher was in power. While Barack Obama was invited, he has opted to send a presidential delegation comprising no serving politicians. Shultz was secretary of state to Ronald Reagan while Baker served the elder George Bush. Also representing Obama will be Barbara Stephenson, chargé d´affaires at the US embassy in London, and Louis Susman, the recently departed ambassador to Britain.

The administration is fueling another housing bubble by pushing lenders to finance homes for people who can´t afford them. Pressure is coming from all corners of government. President Obama is worried about a plunge in new-home buying among minority borrowers with subprime credit scores. So he´s using the Federal Housing Administration, for starters, to help finance failure. In a reckless gambit, FHA is asking lenders to relax lending standards, while assuring them it will back home loans down to a 580 FICO score with a minimal down payment and high debt-to-income ratio.

Call it “Oval Office Couch Syndrome.” By the second term “inside the bubble,” presidents have completely lost touch with reality: Aides and confidants conspire to keep the chief executive insulated from the real world — the bad news, the worse press coverage. They think it’s their job, and lounging on the Oval Office couches, they nod along with the president’s every musing. But this presidency has taken OOCS to new heights — Mr. Obama has only a few trusted aides, and occasional leaks from the West Wing show a paranoid president suspicious of nearly everyone around him.

Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, is on the list of potential Democratic presidential candidates compiled by the extraordinarily astute Prez16.com . As a cabinet secretary (and as a potential, if dark horse, presidential nominee) Madame Secretary should refrain from slurring the Drudge Report, as recently she did, a slur Drudge, confidently, featured. Drudge is no fan of Napolitano. He regularly tweaks her as “Big Sis” (presumably an allusion to George Orwell’s “Big Brother”). Drudge is one of the most powerful — and widely respected — forces in the news business today.

Politics! Politics! They’re playing politics in Washington! Pretending to be modern Paul Reveres, Democrats and their media handmaidens are doing their damnedest to diminish the Benghazi revelations with the cheapest trick in town. While there is always pungent hypocrisy when one gang of politicians accuses another gang of playing politics, the current phony outrage from the Obama Protection Society is exceptionally putrid. After all, the whole saga of Benghazi — before, during and after the terror attack — reflects nothing so much as the ultimate expression of Barack Obama’s politics.
