Conservative Populism
National Review Online, by Victor Davis Hanson

Original Article

Posted By:Pluperfect, 12/18/2012 5:19:10 AM

The conservative failure in 2012 was not an inability to appeal to hyphenated groups on the basis of ethnic, gender, and age identification. Instead, there was a general cluelessness about how to reach the middle and working classes of all races and ethnicities by explaining how conservative principles are not just for the rich. Consider what messages candidates send by the issues they choose to address. Rather than write off the 47 percent of Americans who receive entitlements and do not pay income taxes, conservative candidates needed to wade into those groups

Many great ideas presented here, especially on the handling of illegal immigration. Three problems: the GOP needs an effective messenger (Nikki Haley is looking good as a cheerful warrior); the GOP establishment needs to take out the earplugs and listen to VDH´s populist approach to issues it has been losing; and the media-entertainment complex, owned by the Democrat Party, needs to report honestly (or at all) on the populist GOP message. Hmmm.

The GOP could fill the role of the party of the working people, which the Democrats no longer are. There is a vacuum there!

Definitely a Must Read. VDH brilliantly identifies the core problem with the Republican Party...it has the superior message but is woefully inept in articulating it, and it has allowed the opposition to define it with deceptive terminology. The left is shrewdly adept at crafting and relentlessly hammering terms that disguise their true intentions (stimulus, investment, fair share, etc.), and that incorrectly portray Republicans (the rich, millionaires, greedy, etc.). But the Republicans simply allow such dishonesty and don´t correct it. So it sticks.

Also, I would point out another fatal error the Republicans seem to be unable to avoid...it´s not just the message, it´s also the messenger, stupid. If you don´t want to be typecast as the party of the rich, stop choosing really rich guys as your nominee. If the message is populism (the party of real working people aspiring to better their lives), then pick a populist candidate, dang it.

I agree with the principle expressed even if I am uncertain about the exact message or method. Conservatives need to reeducate the public about core issues in a manner that a now ignorant public can appreciate. This cannot just be done at election time and not just done to the Conservative faithful. A message needs to be delivered in all areas of society, especially those that might not be considered to be receptive. For example, there should be a developed message to show students how they benefit from Conservative policies and how they have been hurt by liberals. Same for Latinos. Search out leaders in these areas and work with them to deliver the message.

To be honest I´m not too hopeful. If these people could reelect a disaster like BO, they have no power of discrimination. But the only other alternative is retreat into self preservation and let the Country go down the toilet.

The Republican “Young Guns” are ready to rule, if they get the chance. Since they first got the name seven years ago, allies and enemies of Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan and Kevin McCarthy are now beginning to jockey to prepare for potential changes at the top of the Republican power structure in the House. Though publicly Speaker John Boehner has said he plans to keep the gavel in the next Congress, most players in Boehnerland think the speaker hasn’t made up his mind about when he’ll call it quits. Christine O´Donnell has weathered political strife, media mockery and IRS scrutiny with a resolute smile and a tactical agenda. And she’s not done yet. Fresh from an academic speaking engagement at Oxford University, poised to write a regular column and provide broadcast content for The Washington Times, and eager to defend herself in a potentially complex tax investigation, the onetime Republican Senate candidate has learned much and is eager to re-engage in the national political debate. Ms. O´Donnell said in an interview that she is convinced the tea party is alive, well and vital to the nation’s future. She also

Former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner has once again invoked her Fifth Amendment right not to testify, refusing to answer questions during a hearing Wednesday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. A former Internal Revenue Service official who refused to answer questions about the agency´s targeting scandal at a hearing last spring has arrived on Capitol Hill for another appearance before a House committee -- but it´s unclear whether she will answer questions this time, either. Lois Lerner headed the IRS division that improperly targeted Tea Party and other conservative groups for extra scrutiny when they applied

President Obama is pressuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make peace right quick — with an implicit threat that otherwise the Jewish state will lose legitimacy. That’s profoundly wrong. In an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg of Bloomberg View, Obama asserted that “if Palestinians come to believe that the possibility of a contiguous, sovereign Palestinian state is no longer within reach, then our ability to manage the international fallout is going to be limited.” Those words give pernicious credibility to a corrosive movement that sees Israel as the root of all evil in the Middle East.

As trading opened on the Russian stock market Monday morning, stocks entered freefall, shedding over ten percent of their value. Where Lois Lerner goes, drama follows. On Wednesday, the former IRS officer again invoked the Fifth before the House Oversight Committee. That precipitated a heated exchange between the committee’s Republican chairman, Darrell Issa, and Democratic ranking member Elijah Cummings, who called the hearings “un-American.” And that spat has become the story. No doubt that is exactly what Cummings had in mind. Because it distracts attention from the substance of the hearings — and from the questions raised by e-mails and public remarks Lois Lerner wrote, received or made when she was IRS Director of Tax Exempt Organizations.
