Tim Scott, who rose through the political ranks to become the first black Republican from South Carolina to serve in Congress since 1901, was named today to fill the unexpired term of Sen. Jim DeMint. The 47-year-old Scott, who’ll be sworn into office Jan. 3, sought to downplay the historical significance of his appointment, instead praising his single mother for the 16-hour days she worked as a nurse’s assistant to support her family. "I am thankful to the good Lord and a strong mom who believes love has to come at the end of a switch," said Scott, who boasts credentials as a Tea Party favorite and evangelical Christian, and was backed by DeMint.

The last Black congressman from SC before Clyburn was elected was a Republican who was defeated in 1896 so the Democrat party in SC doesn´t have a stellar record...Clyburn has kind words to say about Scott in this rather thorough piece...

Unlike Congressman West, a US Senator cannot be gerrymandered out of his seat. Senator Scott could be a big factor in GOP politics for many years to come. He is a welcome factor.

#2, you must not know how the Senate works. This is not a House seat, and this is not Florida. It´s a SC senate seat, and in four years, Scott will be a shoo in for re election.

Rep Scott´s physical attributes remind me of Big Sam (a character in Margret Mitchell´s novel) He is a giant of a man, but gentle in nature, afraid of no one, and tender when necessary. Congratulations, Sir. America needs more like you in the halls of DC corruption...unafraid to use that big stick.

Colorado authorities are questioning two associates of the man suspected in the killing of the state prisons director, a law enforcement source close to the investigation said Thursday. The two men, whom the source declined to identify, are in addition to James Lohr, 47, and Thomas Guolee, 31, two men the El Paso County Sheriff´s Office asked police to be on the lookout for on Wednesday. Williamson, W.Va.- The man suspected of killing a West Virginia sheriff as he ate lunch in his car was mentally disturbed and had no particular vendetta with law enforcement, his father told The Associated Press on Thursday. Melvin Maynard said his 37-year-old son, Tennis Melvin Maynard, was exposed to harmful chemicals and injured while working at an Alabama coal mine. He most likely did not target Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum, he said. "He would have probably shot anybody, the first one he come to, you know what I´m saying?" the elder Maynard said. "I know he was off."
