It isn´t redneck ´gun culture´ that causes mass school shootings –it´s the culture of narcissism

| There is one question that the pious critics of America´s so-called gun culture cannot answer. If mass school shootings like that in Connecticut really are a product of the apparently mad Second Amendment, of the fact that guns are widely available in the US, then why did such shootings only take off in the late 1970s and early 1980s? . . .
|
Comments: A very good piece from a British paper. Since most of the British press is awash with articles about America and guns and how awful we are, this is refreshing.

It would be VERY interesting to overlap timelines of when mass school shootings started and when the SCOTUS outlawed prayer. Have no idea what the chart would look like but just curious.

CT has an assault gun ban that essentially is the same as the ´original´ federal assault ban. The .223 was legal in the eyes if the state.

We believe the author has hit on a salient point. The leftist Northeast liberal elite despises the ´lower´ classes who favor gun ownership, individual freedom, states´ rights, and the Second Amendment. Where do a lot of these Americans live? In the South... Shades of 1861!

Did you hear the one about the three guns that walked into a school? Silly me, guns don´t walk into schools any more than a bottle of Jack or case of beer are able to drive a car. See, the libs always want to leave the human factor out and that just isn´t how these things work. Kinda like the days of old when we accused girls of getting themselves pregnant. We cannot dismiss the human factor.

The politicians sware that advertisements influence voters. Million and million are spent to influence vot thru visual media.
Why then isn´t this theory applied to the corruption of young people when the entertainment people display explosions, car wrecks, mass murders, beatings, abuse etc. This theme is on TV, and the movies constantly.

Lanza did it. Lanza is to blame.
There really are a few people out there capable of evil the rest of us can barely imagine, if at all. And some capable of selfless heroism and sacrifice we can´t conceive either.
That´s the whole of it. It hasn´t changed over human history, nor will it in this life.
It takes a special kind of denial to think we can "help" such monsters and thus "prevent" such horrors. That, and despicable, opportunistic politicians eager to erect yet another enormous, wasteful, parasitic bureaucracy.
Last: the media deserve special attention from Dante for their sub-ghoulish vulturing through this. Very special attention.

Silly article by a Brit who doesn´t know American history. There is a very simple explanation for why this didn´t happen for 2 hundred years and then became relatively commonplace in the 1970s and beyond. For it was in the 1970s that we started emptying the mental institutions and stopped sending young people with severe mental illness to such institutions. We decided they could all be managed in the community...except we saved money by not bothering to set up the community services to manage them. So we left parents like Nancy Lanza to fend for themselves and we changed the laws to make it harder for schools or law enforcement to get a person into a mental hospital...even for a short stay.

If it is not with a firearm, a person bent on taking lives will come up with other means. Getting rid of guns will not end violence.

Obama displays anger and arrogance and throughout his presidency has divided the nation as no other president in recent times.
He should have been a healer not a divider. You have to wonder if the fruits of this failure is at the root of much of the violence we see today.

When asked for my views in the immediate aftermath I said the same as Mr O´Neill although he is far more concise than I was.
Liberals don´t understand that in praising the mediocre, even the faulty, that they are creating potential powder kegs in children, especially adolescent boys already dealing with a bewildering rush of testosterone. When they discover their inevitable failings or when they experience inevitable exclusion from groups, spurned romantic advances and negative feedback in general, they have no emotional rungs on their ladder except the very top one. The fall is often traumatic and painful and in these cases the mind´s survival instinct is denial and displacement which are manifested in neuroses and psychoses with frequent violent fantasies and, sadly, the real thing.

The mainstream propaganda machine glamorizes these copy cat killers and saturates our lives with nonstop coverage. Each of these killers has decided to die, and to go out with a Big Bang. Each tries to outdo the previous headline grabber. Prior to the killing, as they are planning their outrage, they get vicarious thrills from the endless media glorification over the years of the other sociopath mass killers.

I agree with the title, but to be accurate, just how many southern rednecks have gone on a shooting spree ?
Southerners are taught guns are for protection and shooting food, not to play with-ever. It´s the rest of the country that tell kids guns are bad, so when they find a hidden gun, they don´t know what to do with it.
It´s more than narcissism. They took prayer out of school and no one has the fear of G-d anymore. They stopped the draft, so fatherless youth have no discipline. Mothers went to work, so daycare raised the kids. Instant gratification. Every day is Christmas. Why wait for something special ? Kids don´t know disappointment and rejection because everyone is special. Maybe it´s because they stopped spanking for temper tantrums. Just who is in charge in single parent households ? Many times, the kids tell the mother what to do.

Just a couple generations ago kids took shotguns to school so they could go deer/rabbit/squirrel hunting on the way home. Mass shootings were virtually unheard of then. What changed?

Authorities say a 14-year-old has been wounded in a shooting at an Atlanta middle school and a suspect has been taken into custody. Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos says the wounded student has been taken "alert, conscious and breathing" to Grady Hospital. He says the suspect has been tentatively identified as a student and all other students at the school are safe. Campos says the teen was shot outside of the school building. Atlanta Fire Cpt. Marian McDaniel says the teen was shot in the head. McDaniel says a teacher suffered minor cuts and bruises, but was treated on the scene about 2 miles south of downtown. Stephen Alford, a spokesman for Atlanta Public Schools, confirmed that the suspect in the shooting was another student, but did not say whether that student attended Price Middle Schoo, reports CBS Atlanta. Michelle Obama has admitted that she is already tired of the bangs she first sported in January. The First Lady said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: ´Bangs are a day-by-day proposition. They´re starting to grow out, get a little irritating.´ Still, she hasn´t let her hairdo woes get her down. ´It´s okay,´ she said after her initial complaint. ´We´ll be good.´ The first indication that her hairstyle was becoming a burden came about last weekend, when Malia, 14, was spotted adjusting her mother´s hair during the White House Easter Egg Roll.

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

Sen. John McCain says he doesn´t understand the threats from some of his Republican colleagues to filibuster a bill on background checks to buy guns. "I don´t understand it," the Arizona Republican said on Sunday of the threat coming from Sen. Rand Paul,Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Mike Lee and nine other Republicans. "The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand.” "What are we afraid of? ... If this issue is as important as we all think it is, why not take ... it up and debate?"

No one is more preoccupied these days with Hillary Clinton´s 2016 plans than the Beltway political class—not even the former presidential candidate herself. To hear some tell it, her decision will be dispositive for all other Democrats thinking of entering the race. And pundits and reporters aren´t the only ones positing the "The Hillary Factor": No less than the House Democratic whip, Steny Hoyer, told BuzzFeed, “I don´t know that anybody would run against Hillary…. If she runs, she clears the field.” It´s an understandable conclusion, given Clinton´s stature in the Democratic Party and her 70 percent

On Friday, Sean Hannity brought Pat Smith, mother of the late Sean Smith, on his radio program. The 34-year-old information management officer was one of four Americans murdered in the Benghazi embassy attack on September 11, 2012. In the chilling interview, a distraught Ms. Smith, in tears, pleaded for answers and spoke of the efforts to silence her. Ms. Smith first relayed how her son, prior to the attack, requested additional security in advance and warned the State Department: He did tell them, ahead of time, he typed it into his little typewriter over there,

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

The Obama White House is scrambling to blame Friday’s abysmal March jobs numbers on the sequester’s trimming of the rate of growth in federal budgets that have yet to fully commence. After the Labor Department announced that a mass exodus of 663,000 workers left the U.S. workforce last month and that job creation fell 112,000 jobs short of projections, Obama’s top economic adviser Alan B. Krueger, took to the White House blog to blame the sequester: It is important to bear in mind that the March household and payroll surveys are the first monthly surveys to look

But really she’s something much more interesting: a traitor to her class. Her betrayal consists of being gauche enough to acknowledge publicly a truth that everyone who’s come up through Ivy League culture knows intuitively —

The budget President Barack Obama will submit on April 10 will contain a proposal that would prohibit individuals from accumulating more than $3 million in Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and tax-preferred retirement accounts. According to a White House statement, the Obama administration believes the current rules allow some wealthy individuals "to accumulate many millions of dollars in these accounts, substantially more than is needed to fund reasonable levels of retirement saving." "The budget would limit an individual’s total balance across tax-preferred accounts to an amount sufficient to finance an annuity of not more than $205,000 per
