| Trenton — Legislation encouraging customers in New Jersey to carry reusable shopping bags and forcing larger retailers to slash distribution of plastic bags gets its first hearing today. The Senate bill requires retailers to charge 15 cents for each single-use plastic or paper bag they give out. It also requires retailers with more than 1,000 feet of space to reduce the number of single-use bags they distribute by 75 percent. The proposal requires retailers to sell reusable bags and switch to compostable plastic or recyclable paper bags. Supporters say the production of plastic and paper bags in the U.S.

Comments:
Why not prohibit purchase of more than an armload of groceries to encourage walking to and from the store? So green.
Many stores have recycling bins for plastic bags; not a solution? Also, many people use plastic grocery bags as garbage bags. Ban grocery bags and we´ll have to buy plastic bags; no net savings to consumer, some cost savings for stores, boost of business to Hefty et al.

In Kalifornia, several of these self bag stores are getting salmonella and ecoli problems from unsanitary bags being reused again and again.

So what happens if I want to buy a pound of grapes? I have to pay an extra 15 cents for a bag thereby increasing my grocery costs?
Or, do I just put them in the shopping cart? They´ll fall through the openings in the wire frame.
Not a good move considering the state of the economy, the unemployment rate, and the price of groceries!
Will food stamps cover this item?

My solution is to go online and order a stock of plastic bags just like the ones given out in the grocery stores and keep them in the trunk of my car.

That´s been the way we´ve done in here for years. The paper bags are very sturdy, have handles, and can be reused over and over again. Yes, people bring their own bags to the store -- it´s allowed.
And we have a collapsible pull-box that we set into the shopping cart. We can get a little hand-held scanner and scan our groceries as we go, head for the "fast" lane, and just pay what´s on the scanner. There is a 1 in 10 chance that you will be asked to rescan everything in the presence of the cashier, but let´s face it -- the Swiss are by and large very honest. It works, and save a lot of time putting things on belt, having them scanned by a cashier, and then you have put them back into a bag or carrier.
Or get your own canvas tote bags, which are also washable and can be used for other purposes.

The county in CA where some of my family live has banned plastic bags outright and charges five cents (I believe) for paper bags. They´re saving the environment by killing trees for paper and spreading food-borne illnesses in reusable bags that hold germs.

Kathleen Sausa, 42, told borough officials in early 2011 that she was pregnant with twins, according to the lawsuit she filed Monday in Superior Court. The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.
