Forget amnesty, but allow what will be about 20 million illegal aliens to somehow stay here legally, carrying a government issued card with their photograph on it, until they are eventually given US voting rights and become predominantly liberal Democrat voters. We Texans know the old guest worker program worked extremely well for generations. And, I know this opinion is unpopular, but I cannot see how it is logistically possible to round up everyone who is here illegally, much less detain them and expel them. Think of the manpower required to do it? Never mind that Washington hasn´t got the will to do so. Any "path to citizenship" would have to include getting in line behind the ones who have already applied and are waiting.
Of course, the very first step in any immigration reform program would be securing the borders. Is there resolve for that either?

Step 1 - Implement eVerify as a way to check employment eligibility instantly. Companies would be strongly encouraged to verify all current and potential employees to avoid the following.
Step 2 - Punish companies who hire illegals with a $50K fine per employee.
Step 3 - The third time a company is found in violation, revoke that company´s license to do business in the state.

In Ted Poe´s plan, there is no road to citizenship, except for the one already in place. The illegals will become documented workers, exempt from our unbelievably generous welfare system, and will have the option to apply for citizenship, just like everyone else on this planet. This seems reasonable and workable.
