My only concern is that the solution for the street corners of Chicago and the solution for the mass killings is not the same. The Chicago street corners are due to a subculture that glorifies violence. These people are not mentally ill, but have been conditioned that violence is an acceptable way of getting what they want.

In contrast, the mass killers have been mentally ill. Generally they showed no propensity for violence before their horrific action. Instead, they showed a propensity for serious mental illness, which can include psychosis.

In the Chicago situation, the solution is changing the subculture. In the mass killing situation, the solution is easier access to mental health treatment, including a reduction in the ´right to privacy´ that blocks parents, teachers, medical personnel and police from getting the person into treatment when they clearly see that the person´s mental capacity is deteriorating. We also need more restriction on access to guns by persons with serious mental illness. Today, families of these people are not being taught to keep guns out of their homes, nor are there restrictions on sales of weapons to those with serious mental illness.

Sorry, must disagree with #6. The only segment who would benefit from the psychological solution are those in the mental health industry. Metal detectors would be far more effective. If the gunman can´t get in, who can he shoot?

#4, mental illness can strike anywhere. The family is not necessarily dysfunctional. I know many families with a loved one with the diagnoses of this shooter; those families have moved mountains to get their child the help he needs. And they live in fear that one day, they could become the victim, or they could get a phone call that their loved one was the perpetrator of something. The only mistake I see at this point for this family was keeping guns in their homes while a person with these diagnoses was living there. No matter how much is taught about gun safety, psychosis overrides it all. No one living with someone capable of a psychotic break should have guns in their home.

This is the "burning of the Reichstag" moment. O will use it to take control.

yeah make it law that if you have an establishment that says "gun free zone " you check everyone as they enter the building. I try to avoid those places although a lot of hospitals and clinics have them. Mental cases probably don´t read them.

A root cause analysis of this event would not reveal the gun to be the cause. Until our society is forced to do what any successful business would do to eliminate incidents, nothing will change.

The answer is you cant prevent this, as I have written before you cant force a mental problem case hospitaijze. The surprime opened the mental hospital gates years ago because their " rights were being violated by forced hospitialization.

I submit that this societies young people have become desentizied to violence through violent ideo games, bloody violent movies such as those by Tarantino, the "Hostel" films, the everyday violence in the black neighborhoods, etc. this is what has to be cleaned up, and fast. They are burying their heads in the sand by avoiding these issues and blaming it all on guns.

The FIRST and most fundamental thing we must do is to bring back three things currently very unpopular in this society -- morality, self-control, and responsibility. Teach the younger generation RIGHT FROM WRONG and make them aware that it is their RESPONSIBILITY to control their behavior and do what is right!

True mental illness will always be with us. But to be brutally honest, how many of the people who are currently diagnosed with mental illnesses are really MORALLY ill? We bring up our children without a sense of right and wrong, and then when they act out their fallen human natures, we give them drugs and call them mentally ill. The TV and the schools tell them all day long that they´re entitled to do whatever "feels good" and that self-control is a bad and repressive thing. Then we wonder why they don´t control their impulses, including the most vicious ones.

There will always be those who insist on breaking moral rules. However, how can we expect moral behavior from a generation that never learned the difference between moral and amoral behavior? It ain´t rocket science, folks.

Often parents will try to put a happy face on divorce "(it was amicable, the kids will be fine, they´ll get over it") but we all know better. Divorce is devastating to children.

Of course not all children in dysfunctional families become murderers; but conversely, it is almost certainly true that all murderers come from dysfunctional families.

I think a "meaningful action" would be for obama to stop his class warfare hate speech. According to the Dem Think, 90% of the country is getting screwed by the other 10% and we need a much bigger government to get some fairness. The Dems constant incitement of rage and hatred is fueling a lot of this violence. I never heard Ronald Reagan even once tell people that they should be mad and seek revenge.

You have to remember that there are a lot of mentally ill people out there who vote for the liberal Democrats, so the liberal Democrats are not going to emphasize the fact that these murders were perpetrated by a mentally ill person.

On the other side of the coin, firearms have no vote, so you can safely bet that the liberal Democrats will attempt to lay as much blame as they can on guns.

What the Congress should be doing is passing effective measures, including waiving the medical privacy laws during background checks for prospective firearms purchasers, that would greatly help to keep mentally ill people from being able to purchase firearms, as the current ATF background procedures for firearms purchasers are clearly ineffective in that respect.

In the Connecticut case, even tightening up the ATF procedures might not have worked, as from first reports, if correct, it appears that the perpetrator´s mother had the guns that he used registered in her name, certainly an indication that she may have been a firearms straw purchaser who affectively bought guns for her mentally ill son, resulting in the loss of her life, and the lives of 26 other innocent people.

Firearms have long been easily available. Spree killings by young people are new. Blaming the tool used does not account for the phenomenon. The incredible pornographic violence of pop culture is the new factor here and is undoubtedly a major contributor to such horrible shootings. In movies, on TV, in music(rap) and, most of all, in violent video games the violence is omnipresent and graphically depicted. The latest killer, like the Columbine killers and others, including the Norway mass killer, was exposed to all of this, including the violent video games, some of the most popular of which are called "first person shooter" games.

Many elements go into these terrible crimes. Ignoring everything but the murder weapon itself is shallow and misleading. It mistakes the symptom for the disease. And it represents a denial of the existential peril of life and well as the propensity of human beings for premeditated evil. Liberal fantasy ideology has no room for any of this and insists upon blaming the weapons and those who disagree with their emotional urge to eliminate the instruments of violence.

Monstrous acts of wickedness like these child murders punch a hole in the imaginary life world of liberals which they are desperate to plug as quickly as possible. Having rejected the category of evil for the pseudo-explanations of superficial rationalism, liberals are unable to comprehend acts of pure evil and prefer to change the subject and avert their eyes. Championing more gun control and demonizing those who oppose them is a convenient and effective means of avoiding the many issues raised by these horrifying slaughters of the innocents.

Maybe Lanza didn´t see the "Gun Free Zone" signs. Then again, why would anyone think those signs and the similar "Drug Free Zones" would prevent anything?

Ok great, what is "meaningful action"? Gun control? We all know that will only take guns away from people who want to defend themselves. Whackjobs and criminals will always be able to get guns.

Here is the truth. We live in a free society. With that comes responsibility. You cannot control all irresponsible behavior. Take guns away, people will use illegal arms. Or knives, or look up how to make a poison gas and throw it into a classroom, or a bomb in a suitcase. Or whatever.

As awful as it is, that is living in a free society. What is the alternative? Start locking up in a mental facility anyone you don´t like or looks at you funny. Just wondering, who grieves for the 300+ Mexican Citizens dead because Barack Obama decided to sell weapons to Mexico´s most violent drug cartels?

Obama´s "Operation Fast & Furious" resulted in the murders of over three hundred people, twelve times the number of victims in the Sandy Hook shootings, and we still can´t get any answers from the (p)Resident as to WHY he did it.

I´d be all in favor of BS and PC Free Zones, as well as No Media Allowed signs.

Obama is going to allow the families to pray to him in person, as their savior, when he makes a speech there, announcing a temporary ban on gun sales.

After some time passes, someone needs to highlight the crime rates in Gun Free Zones.

Also, please don´t advocate for gov´t mental incarceration. DHS is already planning to deem all returning military with combat experience with mental problems that mean they can´t have a gun.
