| On Friday, we learned that more than two dozen people were killed when a gunman opened fire in an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. Most of those who died were just young children with their whole lives ahead of them. And every parent in America has a heart heavy with hurt. Among the fallen were also teachers—men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams.

I think a great start would be reinstating prayer in schools.
Do you thinhk this is the meaningful action that Obama might have in mind?

Arm the teachers so incidents like this won´t happen again, but I doubt that the Communist in Chief meant that.

My only concern is that the solution for the street corners of Chicago and the solution for the mass killings is not the same. The Chicago street corners are due to a subculture that glorifies violence. These people are not mentally ill, but have been conditioned that violence is an acceptable way of getting what they want.
In contrast, the mass killers have been mentally ill. Generally they showed no propensity for violence before their horrific action. Instead, they showed a propensity for serious mental illness, which can include psychosis.
In the Chicago situation, the solution is changing the subculture. In the mass killing situation, the solution is easier access to mental health treatment, including a reduction in the ´right to privacy´ that blocks parents, teachers, medical personnel and police from getting the person into treatment when they clearly see that the person´s mental capacity is deteriorating. We also need more restriction on access to guns by persons with serious mental illness. Today, families of these people are not being taught to keep guns out of their homes, nor are there restrictions on sales of weapons to those with serious mental illness.

Sorry, must disagree with #6. The only segment who would benefit from the psychological solution are those in the mental health industry. Metal detectors would be far more effective. If the gunman can´t get in, who can he shoot?

Won´t happen. He´s never lead - he´s waiting for Valerie Jarrett´s instructions.

#4, mental illness can strike anywhere. The family is not necessarily dysfunctional. I know many families with a loved one with the diagnoses of this shooter; those families have moved mountains to get their child the help he needs. And they live in fear that one day, they could become the victim, or they could get a phone call that their loved one was the perpetrator of something. The only mistake I see at this point for this family was keeping guns in their homes while a person with these diagnoses was living there. No matter how much is taught about gun safety, psychosis overrides it all. No one living with someone capable of a psychotic break should have guns in their home.

Meaningful action would be to put up signs at schools saying, "Armed Security on Staff" and arm them. Instead, innocent children get smugly stupid signs saying, "Gun-free Zone" (that may as well say "Target-Rich Environment").
While we´re at it, let´s take a meaningful survey of all the gun grabbing control-freak politicians and celebrities to see how many of them have armed security. Disgusting hypocrites who want to punish people who didn´t do anything because it makes them feel good about themselves.

yeah make it law that if you have an establishment that says "gun free zone " you check everyone as they enter the building. I try to avoid those places although a lot of hospitals and clinics have them. Mental cases probably don´t read them.

A root cause analysis of this event would not reveal the gun to be the cause. Until our society is forced to do what any successful business would do to eliminate incidents, nothing will change.
Meaningful action means doing what feels good, or fits an agenda not what is meaningful nor provide action.

#10 excellent points. I too have known good families with a troubled kid. Very very sad. Our mental health industry can do next to nothing. It´s some people making a buck...prescribing mild sedatives for the most part. Not much better than leeches (the medicine...or, wait...)

I submit that this societies young people have become desentizied to violence through violent ideo games, bloody violent movies such as those by Tarantino, the "Hostel" films, the everyday violence in the black neighborhoods, etc. this is what has to be cleaned up, and fast. They are burying their heads in the sand by avoiding these issues and blaming it all on guns.

The FIRST and most fundamental thing we must do is to bring back three things currently very unpopular in this society -- morality, self-control, and responsibility. Teach the younger generation RIGHT FROM WRONG and make them aware that it is their RESPONSIBILITY to control their behavior and do what is right!
True mental illness will always be with us. But to be brutally honest, how many of the people who are currently diagnosed with mental illnesses are really MORALLY ill? We bring up our children without a sense of right and wrong, and then when they act out their fallen human natures, we give them drugs and call them mentally ill. The TV and the schools tell them all day long that they´re entitled to do whatever "feels good" and that self-control is a bad and repressive thing. Then we wonder why they don´t control their impulses, including the most vicious ones.
There will always be those who insist on breaking moral rules. However, how can we expect moral behavior from a generation that never learned the difference between moral and amoral behavior? It ain´t rocket science, folks.

There are always warnings. Unfortunately, liberals led the charge to empty mental hospitals, starting back in the 1950s.
As liberals always do, they neglected to think it through. A society that puts up too many hurdles to the evaluation and hospitalization of the mentally ill ends up with some people living on the streets, and others living in homes where their families are at risk.
Meaningful action means we stop pretending the only civil rights worth protecting are those of the mentally ill.

#10, the family was to some degree dysfunctional, by definition. I.e., the young man´s parents got divorced apparently when he was barely into his teens.
Often parents will try to put a happy face on divorce "(it was amicable, the kids will be fine, they´ll get over it") but we all know better. Divorce is devastating to children.
Of course not all children in dysfunctional families become murderers; but conversely, it is almost certainly true that all murderers come from dysfunctional families.

I think a "meaningful action" would be for obama to stop his class warfare hate speech. According to the Dem Think, 90% of the country is getting screwed by the other 10% and we need a much bigger government to get some fairness. Problem is, mentally unstable people take matters into their own hands, like we see these tragedies more and more.
The Dems constant incitement of rage and hatred is fueling a lot of this violence. I never heard Ronald Reagan even once tell people that they should be mad and seek revenge.

You have to remember that there are a lot of mentally ill people out there who vote for the liberal Democrats, so the liberal Democrats are not going to emphasize the fact that these murders were perpetrated by a mentally ill person.
On the other side of the coin, firearms have no vote, so you can safely bet that the liberal Democrats will attempt to lay as much blame as they can on guns.
What the Congress should be doing is passing effective measures, including waiving the medical privacy laws during background checks for prospective firearms purchasers, that would greatly help to keep mentally ill people from being able to purchase firearms, as the current ATF background procedures for firearms purchasers are clearly ineffective in that respect.
In the Connecticut case, even tightening up the ATF procedures might not have worked, as from first reports, if correct, it appears that the perpetrator´s mother had the guns that he used registered in her name, certainly an indication that she may have been a firearms straw purchaser who affectively bought guns for her mentally ill son, resulting in the loss of her life, and the lives of 26 other innocent people.

Firearms have long been easily available. Spree killings by young people are new. Blaming the tool used does not account for the phenomenon. The incredible pornographic violence of pop culture is the new factor here and is undoubtedly a major contributor to such horrible shootings. In movies, on TV, in music(rap) and, most of all, in violent video games the violence is omnipresent and graphically depicted. The latest killer, like the Columbine killers and others, including the Norway mass killer, was exposed to all of this, including the violent video games, some of the most popular of which are called "first person shooter" games.
Many elements go into these terrible crimes. Ignoring everything but the murder weapon itself is shallow and misleading. It mistakes the symptom for the disease. And it represents a denial of the existential peril of life and well as the propensity of human beings for premeditated evil. Liberal fantasy ideology has no room for any of this and insists upon blaming the weapons and those who disagree with their emotional urge to eliminate the instruments of violence.
Monstrous acts of wickedness like these child murders punch a hole in the imaginary life world of liberals which they are desperate to plug as quickly as possible. Having rejected the category of evil for the pseudo-explanations of superficial rationalism, liberals are unable to comprehend acts of pure evil and prefer to change the subject and avert their eyes. Championing more gun control and demonizing those who oppose them is a convenient and effective means of avoiding the many issues raised by these horrifying slaughters of the innocents.

Many of the factors that #33 brings out above are created by the very liberal Hollywood and New York entertainment industries who were huge contributers to Barack Obama and the liberal Democrats.
So look for the liberal Democrats to completely ignore things like violent movies, and computer games as they consider what course of action to take politically.

Ok great, what is "meaningful action"? Gun control? We all know that will only take guns away from people who want to defend themselves. Whackjobs and criminals will always be able to get guns.
Here is the truth. We live in a free society. With that comes responsibility. You cannot control all irresponsible behavior. Take guns away, people will use illegal arms. Or knives, or look up how to make a poison gas and throw it into a classroom, or a bomb in a suitcase. Or whatever.
As awful as it is, that is living in a free society. What is the alternative? Start locking up in a mental facility anyone you don´t like or looks at you funny. Arrest your 7 year old kid for saying "I am going to kill you" to a bullying classmate. Take your defensive weapons away. Create a federal police force to "investigate undesirables".
Which way do you want it folks, freedom with the associated horrors of dirtbags and psychos, or lose all your freedoms and be imprisoned in your own society?
I know which one this "president" wants.

I´ve said it before and I"ll say it again....every time gun owners make progress (the latest decision against Illinois in court), something like this happens...
It isn´t far from feasible that the anti-gunners have a ´stable´ of unstable people and every once in a while they arm them and trot them out to commit some carnage or another.
Just because you don´t think they are out to get you doesn´t mean they aren´t...

#12, the guns were registered. The Democrats and some Republicans want to force a choice so you have to decide, are we going to be like Israel and Switzerland or like Britain and Japan? I guess being like Vermont is off the table. Please remember that if you like the ´no guns ever´ route, criminals, bad cops, very wealthy, politicians and friend of the court will always have their guns. It´s just that YOU will not have that option again. It´s a BIG step and you might want to read some recent global history before you apply the magical thinking.

Obama is going to allow the families to pray to him in person, as their savior, when he makes a speech there, announcing a temporary ban on gun sales.
After some time passes, someone needs to highlight the crime rates in Gun Free Zones.
Also, please don´t advocate for gov´t mental incarceration. DHS is already planning to deem all returning military with combat experience with mental problems that mean they can´t have a gun.

It would have been interesting to be a waiter at the Jefferson Hotel last evening as Democrat President Obama dined with a dozen Senate Democrats after so angrily and thoroughly denouncing said chamber and said Democrats a few hours earlier. It was a mortifying day for the Chicago machine Democrat, unaccustomed as he is to fellow party members defying their titular head. Five Democrats joined 41 Republicans against 54 other Dems to defeat expanded gun purchase background checks in a vote requiring 60 to pass. Such checks were once considered a virtual gimme for the Oval Office shotgun buff.

In one of those ceremonial pageants the Brits invented, Margaret Hilda Thatcher´s funeral unfolded this morning on the old streets of London to the sounds of the classical music she loved and Bible verses in St. Paul´s Cathedral. So great was the global appreciation for the Iron Lady who led Great Britain from 1979-90, that 2,000 dignitaries attended, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. This was the monarch´s first funeral of a former prime minister in nearly a half-century. The bloody scene looked more like Kabul or Baghdad Monday afternoon. But it was downtown Boston on a bright, shiny holiday at the finish line for the Boston Marathon. There, two trash can bombs went off, injuring scores and killing three, including an eight-year-old boy. The awful spectacle was doubly shocking to Americans because, Fort Hood aside, homeland terrorism has been largely thwarted since 9/11. To maximize the impact of their deadly cowardice, terrorists plan their deeds not for, say Mile 18 of a marathon.

It’s always a stressful and time-consuming exercise, figuring out how much we have to hand over to help cover our government’s bills Unfortunately, many of the leaders you send to Washington want to make this time of year even harder.

Hi. As you’ve probably noticed, I’m not the President. I’m just a citizen. And as a citizen, I’m here at the White House today because I want to make a difference and I hope you will join me. My name is Francine Wheeler. My husband David is with me. We live in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. David and I have two sons. Our older son Nate, soon to be 10 years old, is a fourth grader at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Our younger son, Ben, age six, was murdered in his first-grade classroom on December 14th.

This year, we mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War -- a time when thousands of our prisoners of war finally came home after years of starvation and hardship. A group of our POWs emerged carrying a large wooden crucifix, nearly four feet tall. They had spent months on it, secretly collecting firewood, carving it using radio wire for a crown of thorns. It was a tribute to their friend, their chaplain, their fellow prisoner who had touched their souls and saved their lives -- Father Emil Kapaun. This is an amazing story.

One of the privileges of being a journalist for so many years has been the opportunity to witness some historical events in person. Now, of course, anyone can experience events once reserved for only a few. More importantly, I have discovered over time, has been the opportunity to talk with some of the most interesting people around, to probe their minds and learn to think in ways I had never imagined. No mind more so than that of Eugene Kennedy, a former priest and professor emeritus at Loyola University, who’s an expert on history, the church and human nature.

Late as usual, President Obama unveiled his budget Wednesday for the next fiscal year, a 5.5-pound document that outlines $3,800,000,000,000 in spending, another $100 billion whacked from national defense, billions more poured into (union) construction and another $580 billion in additional taxes squeezed from the country´s wealthy because they still have some. Obama´s budget is politically DOA, of course. Tired of waiting, the House has already passed one. Last year´s Obama Opus didn´t garner one single vote from any member of either party in either chamber. But stacks of budget books make good B-roll for TV cutaways.

Despite the endorsement of President Obama, Robin Kelly easily won election Tuesday night in a special House election to represent Illinois´ troubled Second Congressional District. The sprawling urban-suburban district, containing Chicago´s ugly South Side, was formerly represented by Jesse Jackson Jr., who like a number of Illinois politicians will be residing in a federal penitentiary for a while. In fact, the last three incumbents of the Second District´s seat have moved on to prison cells, as have some recent governors. But that’s probably coincidence.

President Obama was on again Monday about gun laws, not enforcing the existing ones. But getting some new ones, any new ones so he can claim some kind of political victory after all of the promises and vows he made in the emotional days last December. But Obama wasn´t working on the senators from his own party who will actually determine the fate of these measures. That would be political leadership. No, Obama was out of town again, up in Hartford for a photo op with Connecticut legislators and some Newtown families.

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes--six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either. Why did the no-brainer bill fail? Four reasons:

President Obama angrily blamed the defeat Wednesday of his centerpiece gun-control proposal on lies spread by the National Rifle Association, calling it “a pretty shameful day for Washington.” “The gun lobby and its allies willfully lied about the bill,” Mr. Obama said in the White House rose garden about 90 minutes after the vote. “It came down to politics.” As he spoke, Mr. Obama was surrounded by family members of victims of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting. Also with him was former Rep. Gabby Giffords of Arizona, wounded in an assassination attempt.

Authorities on Tuesday revealed little new information about the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon, the most high-profile bombing on U.S. soil in more than a decade and a tragedy that presents a new test for President Obama. Obama, like all Americans, is standing by, waiting for answers as to who planted two bombs improvised from pressure cookers at the finish line of the storied race, and why. Three Americans were killed in Monday´s attack and more than 170 others were injured. "Anytime bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror," Obama said,

The Senate delivered a devastating blow to President Obama’s agenda to regulate guns Wednesday by defeating a bipartisan proposal to expand background checks. It failed by a vote of 54 to 46, with 5 Democrats voting against it. Only 4 Republicans supported it. Democratic Sens. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Max Baucus (Mont.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Mark Begich (Alaska) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) voted against it. Reid supported the measure but voted against it to preserve his ability to bring the measure up again. GOP Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Susan Collins (Maine), Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Mark Kirk

While the media are bearing the brunt of public skepticism over the handling of the Boston bombing, the behavior of government is also eroding public trust. Yesterday´s promised but cancelled news briefing is just one symptom. Andrew McCarthy of PJM notes that "Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday´s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon," and that part of it is the natural outgrowth of the desire of investigators to keep the details of their investigations secret, so as not to alert suspects.

Mark Kelly, the astronaut husband of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, on Thursday upbraided senators who voted against gun legislation by saying they voted “out of fear.” ”If that vote had been a secret ballot, I bet you it would have passed with 80 votes,” Kelly told reporters. He was referencing the compromise authored by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) to expand background checks for gun buyers. It failed to advance in the Senate, with a vote Wednesday afternoon of 54 to 46.

After all the controversy – it was too much, and too expensive; it would be marred by protests – this morning’s funeral for Lady Thatcher in London was a splendid and memorable affair, which did her memory, and her country, proud. It was a moving, dignified and pitch-perfect occasion: unmistakably British, and a fitting send-off for the country’s greatest post-war prime minister. Big Ben fell silent – for the first time since the funeral of wartime leader Winston Churchill – and tens of thousands of admirers lined the streets to applaud Lady Thatcher’s coffin

An article published on CNN´s website makes an unproven claim that pressure cooker bombs like the ones used at the Boston Marathon terror attack are a ´signature´ of ´right-wing extremists.´ The article was co-written by Jennifer Roland and Peter Bergen. Bergen is the CNN ananlyst made the claim that right-wing extremists could be behind the bombing less than two hours after it took place. The article says (emphasis added) :A senior U.S. counterterrorism investigator told CNN that pressure cooker bombs have also been a signature of extreme right-wing individuals in the

As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.

Washington — President Barack Obama says the Senate’s opposition to a bill that would have expanded background checks for gun buyers marks a “shameful day” in Washington. He says a minority of senators decided “it wasn’t worth it” to protect the nation’s children. Obama spoke in the Rose Garden shortly after the Senate vote rejecting a bipartisan effort to expand federal background checks to more firearms buyers. (Snip) The president pinned the blame for the measures failure, though five Democrats also opposed the plan. He also said the gun lobby and its allies “willfully lied” about background check bill.

Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday’s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon. The anxiety stemming from the attack and the stream of inaccurate news about it is further freighted, moreover, by the FBI’s confirmation that two letters addressed to top political officials — President Obama and Senator Richard Wicker (R., MS) — tested positive for ricin, a deadly poison. As noted below, a man identified as Kenneth Curtis of Tupelo, Mississippi, has reportedly been arrested in connection with the mailings. Early this afternoon, massive confusion
