ALBANY, NY — New York was given federal approval Friday to set up an online marketplace for individuals and small businesses to buy health insurance. The federal Department of Health and Human Services said New York, Kentucky and Washington, D.C., are the latest places given the go-ahead to create health exchanges and provide options geared to the uninsured under the Affordable Care Act. Six other states won approvals Monday. Enrollment through the exchanges will begin Oct. 1 for insurance starting in January 2014. Too bad we won´t know the real costs for a couple of years. We will learn some costs in 2013.

Then what insurers are willing to offer and 2014 if people will voluntarily buy.

Meanwhile the costs and success numbers from Washington and from various states will be creative, to say the least.

Saudi Arabian Airline is scheduled to begin new service from Los Angeles International Airport to Saudi Arabia later this month, an occasion that is customarily celebrated with an elaborate ceremony on the tarmac and in the terminal. For example, when Emirates Airline debuted in December daily service between LAX and Dubai, the airlines taxied the A380 plane to the gate under a shower of water from the airport fire trucks´ water cannons. But with California in its worst drought in modern times, LAX officials told Saudi Arabian Airline that they´ll have to make do without the water cannons for the

The National Rifle Association has filed a friend-of-the-court brief in a case in federal court in New York challenging the federal government’s data surveillance techniques, arguing the data collection violates the First Amendment and could undermine federal privacy laws that prohibit the formation of a registry of firearms or gun owners. The gun rights group is supporting a request by the American Civil Liberties Union to reverse a ruling from the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York that upheld the surveillance policies. The brief filed this month comes as privacy issues and government spying has once

For half a century, television ads have been the staple of political campaigns, the preferred, if costly, vehicle for communicating a candidate’s message to the voters. What happens when people stop watching live television? That day hasn’t arrived yet and probably never will. But the outlines of the new world of television watching habits — and their implications for political campaigns — were highlighted in a survey released Thursday at a conference hosted by Harvard’s Institute of Politics and the Internet Association. The survey, presented by Robert Blizzard of the Republican firm Public Opinion Strategies and Julie Hootkin of the

Around 93% of voters in Crimea have backed joining Russia and seceding from Ukraine, according to exit polls quoted by Russian news agencies. Polls closed at 18:00 GMT and officials hailed a "record" turnout. Preliminary results are expected within hours. Many opponents boycotted the vote, which has been rejected by the US and the EU as illegitimate. Pro-Russian forces took control of Crimea in February after Ukraine´s pro-Moscow president was overthrown. On the ballot paper, voters were asked whether they would like Crimea to rejoin Russia. A leading ayatollah of Iran’s Islamic regime is promising that Western leaders will be executed by the Islamic messiah, the state-owned media outlet Mehr news reported Saturday. “When Imam Zaman [´Mahdi,´ the last Shiite Imam] comes, he will behead the Western leaders,” warned Ayatollah Mohammad Emami Kashani, the interim Friday prayer leader of Tehran and a member of the Assembly of Experts, the body that chooses the supreme leader. “However, Imam will not harm the oppressed nations,” he said. The Shiite clerical establishment in Iran believes that at the end of times, the 12th Imam, Mahdi, a ninth century prophet,

Police are investigating the possibility that the pilot of missing Flight MH370 hijacked his own aircraft in a bizarre political protest. The Mail on Sunday has learned that Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah was an ‘obsessive’ supporter of Malaysia’s opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim. And hours before the doomed flight left Kuala Lumpur it is understood 53-year-old Shah attended a controversial trial in which Ibrahim was jailed for five years. Campaigners say the politician, the key challenger to Malaysia’s ruling party, was the victim of a long-running smear campaign and had faced trumped-up charges. Police sources have confirmed that Shah was a vocal political activist

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) may be popular among hard-line conservatives nationally, but back home he’s in some hot water. According to an Emerson College poll, his favorability is underwater, by a margin of 43 to 48 percent. Moreover, his favorable/unfavorable rating with women is 39 to 50 percent. I asked the poll director for further detail and found: Republicans: 74 percent favorable, 18 percent unfavorable ~Democrats: 8 percent favorable, 82 percent unfavorable ~Independents: 38 percent favorable, 50 percent unfavorable

President Barack Obama hit back at critics calling him out for his "mom jeans. "I´ve been unfairly maligned about my jeans," Obama said Friday in an interview with radio host Ryan Seacrest. "The truth is, generally I look very sharp in jeans. There was one episode like four years ago in which I was wearing some loose jeans, mainly because I was out on the pitcher´s mound and I didn´t want to feel confined while I was pitching, and I think I´ve paid my penance for that. I got whacked pretty good. Since that time, my jeans fit very well."

By now it’s settled on most people, including Democrats, that the loss of Alex Sink to David Jolly in Florida’s 13th Congressional District was, in the words of the New York Times, “devastating” to Democrats. It’s a district Ms. Sink carried in her unsuccessful race for governor against Rick Scott, a district that Barack Obama carried in his two elections, and a district that demographically now favors Democrats. In addition, Ms. Sink raised more money and ran a better campaign than Jolly. Even Bill Clinton lent his efforts to her campaign. And yet she lost. What should particularly alarm Democrats is

Last week, the U.S. Tenth Circuit decided a case that should reverberate on Capitol Hill. In Kerr v. Hickenlooper, five Colorado legislators sought “standing” to challenge a state constitutional amendment. The three-judge panel — consisting of Carter and Clinton appointees — ruled in favor of the legislators’ standing. This decision should embolden members of Congress who correctly believe that President Obama has encroached upon Congress’ constitutional authority. Indeed, Congress should do no less in defending its authority than the five Colorado state legislators. Many members of Congress believe that numerous presidential actions — delaying various provisions of the Affordable Care

And helping them could boost the Republican Party, added the former Kellogg Co. executive.
