N. Joseph Woodland, the co-inventor of the bar code, died this week at an assisted-living facility in Edgewater where he had been living with his wife the past six years, family members said Thursday. Mr. Woodland, 91, came up with the idea for the bar code, now used to store information on almost every product sold in stores or online, as he drew lines in the sand on a beach in Miami 64 years ago, said one of his daughters, Susan Woodland, who lives in New York City. He and his partner, Bernard Silver, who died in the 1960s,

I work as an engineer for a very large shipping company. For 12 years I have worked closely with bar code scanning equipment. These machines make sure your package gets to you quickly and are quite amazing. And yes - He did that.

Pentecostals believe the bar code is the mark of the beast. I got in an argument with a Pentecostal friend about this. He leaped from his chair and was going to strike me. I left his home and never spoke to him again.

No disrespect meant, but Mr. Woodland´s passing does give an opportunity for a unique headstone.

Earlier this month, a Tesla Model S sitting in a Toronto garage ignited and caught on fire. The car was about four months old and was not plugged in to an electric socket, says a source. Fires are a touchy issue for the company, which reports Q4 2013 earnings on February 19th. Last year, three vehicles caught fire over the course of six weeks. The company has previously pointed out in a government filing that the lithium ion battery cells "have been observed to catch fire or vent smoke and flame." So the fires have raised concerns with consumers and caused

Christopher Porter-Bailey, the man arrested in a brutal robbery and attack during San Francisco Pride weekend, has been found guilty in the assault of the woman, the District Attorney’s Office said. The June 30 attack was captured on video. In the widely circulated clip, a woman sits dazed on the sidewalk after three men punched her and stole her phone. Having gotten what they came for, the group moves along, but then Porter-Bailey turns back and delivers a violent kick to the woman’s face. A cautionary note: The video below is disturbing. The 28-year-old victim did not

Women in public life still have their leadership styles subjected to extra scrutiny and criticism, Hillary Clinton said on Thursday, as she advised ambitious women to take former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s advice and “grow a skin like a rhinoceros”. The former US secretary of state said she had learned from “a lot of missteps” during her career that while the eccentricities of male leaders had been celebrated for decades, “we are still developing what are the acceptable styles of leadership for women”. “I think you have to be so intentionally thoughtful about that as you assume a role in the

I wasn´t able to attend, but I watched the hearing on the SFGov TV channel. (And I´d like my two hours and 47 minutes back, thank you.) The idea was to see if the plan is working. Spoiler alert - it isn´t. It´s not from lack of effort. Faced with what they describe as a perfect storm of converging threats from infectious disease epidemics, U.S. officials are launching a global effort Thursday with more than two dozen countries and international organizations to prevent deadly outbreaks from spreading. The goal is to prevent, detect and respond to infectious disease threats where they start. That’s more effective and less costly than treating sick people after diseases spread. The new initiative will aim to bolster security at infectious disease laboratories, strengthen immunization programs and set up emergency response centers that can react to outbreaks within 120 minutes. The temporary restraining order was issued in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Tulsa by Missouri death row inmate Michael Taylor. In the debate over how to confront climate change, carbon dioxide gets most of the attention. But at the city level, new research suggests, we ought to be looking just as critically at how urban growth is raising temperatures. A group of researchers found that as urban areas in the United States expand, so too will the “heat island effect,” in which pavement, rooftops, parking lots and other hard surfaces absorb heat and slowly release it, boosting temperatures higher than rural surroundings. By century’s end, the built environment will contribute as much to rising temperatures in cities across the United States

Famed former CNN host Larry King said he has never heard of Juanita Broaddrick Thursday in an interview with Steve Malzberg on Newsmax TV. Broadrrick, a former Arkansas nursing home worker, accused President Clinton of raping her during the late 1970s in a 1998 Dateline interview. Malzberg was describing a double standard of media coverage during the 2012 conventions, noting left wing pundits dubbed the GOP convention a “convention of rapists” while remaining silent on President Clinton’s keynote address despite sexual assault allegations directed against the former president. King interjected “Hold up, hold up. Stop! Bill Clinton was accused of rape?” Malzberg reacted

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was in direct contact with President Barack Obama at least 18 times between October 2012 and October 2013, including seven occasions where her draft calendar showed Obamacare as the topic of conversation. The news appears to contradict her insistence that Obama was in the dark about problems plaguing the ill-fated healthcare.gov website in the months leading up to its October 1, 2013 launch. The Hill newspaper reported Thursday that documents released through a Freedom of Information Act request show meetings, events and phone calls where the two were together. They also show at

Ted Cruz’s latest filibustering of a Senate bill to increase the debt ceiling as self-destructive maneuver that achieved nothing — except, perhaps, hastened the destruction of the GOP. “What exactly was on Ted Cruz’s mind?” a boggled Reagan asked. “What was he thinking of in terms of his Senate colleagues? Less than 24 hours after President Obama illegally rewrote the law he had previously jammed down Boehner´s -- and the country´s -- throat, Boehner handed the budding dictator a clean debt-ceiling hike. Last October, Obama vindictively shut down the federal government upon his having refused to delay ObamaCare, which of course is exactly what he himself lawlessly did on February 10, 2014! Of course, Boehner is hardly in a position to argue now, having foolishly (immensely so) accepted responsibility for the shutdown. At least every week now, there is a new story supporting the narrative of an inevitable 2016 Hillary Clinton presidential bid. Indeed, the conventional wisdom is that it is an absolute certainty that she will run. If anyone is currently saying, flat out, that Hillary isn´t running, I haven´t come across them. Is the inevitability of her run really as certain as the conventional wisdom suggests, and further, is it unfolding in an optimal manner for the potential candidate? In all likelihood, Clinton will not make a final, "go-or-no-go" decision until early next year, after the dust has settled from

The president of Family Health Care directed staff to block Fox News after a board member complained about our network’s coverage of the Affordable Care Act, an employee told me. “The board member complained that patients were turning the channel to Fox News,” said the employee who asked

The school of literary criticism known as reception theory holds that a text should be studied in light of its effect on its contemporaries, that a reader should be aware of the “horizon of expectations” in which a text is produced. I was reminded of this the other day as I observed, in amusement, fascination, and occasional pity, the reaction of the so-called mainstream media to Alana Goodman’s lengthy and rock-solid report on “The Hillary Papers.” This trove of previously unexamined transcriptions of conversations between Hillary Clinton and her best friend Diane Blair had been collecting dust at the University

Is demonic possession real or the manifestation of mental illness? In assisting priests in nearly 100 exorcisms, Adam Blai has become a true believer in good and evil, God and the devil. Former Allegheny County commissioner Bob Cranmer says he shares that same knowledge. He says his home was possessed. “I’ve seen it; I’ve seen crucifixes bent in half repeatedly. We cheered a week ago, when President Obama used the National Prayer Breakfast to call for release of two Americans. The first is Kenneth Bae, a prisoner of North Korea. The other is Saeed Abedini, a prisoner of Iran. Each has been sentenced to long prison terms for “crimes” that only a criminal regime would deem criminal: Bae for ministering to Christians and Abedini for work on behalf of house churches. Alas, the week since Obama’s call confirms a depressing fact about America’s diminished standing in the world these days. Pyongyang packed Bae off to one of its labor camps in the vast
