Lawmakers propose canceling
N.J. standardized tests

TRENTON — Two New Jersey lawmakers are floating an idea to delay or cancel standardized tests for students this year because of school disruptions from Hurricane Sandy. "For me, this is the storm of a lifetime, and I think there either needs to be either a timetable extension for when you give the test or a moratorium on a test," said Assemblywoman Connie Wagner (D-Bergen). "Why is it so important this year?" Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (D-Essex) said she thinks students are going through a “post-traumatic stress situation

Comments:
Two idiot NJ democrat assembly persons from urban districts minimally impacted by the storm provide yet another excuse to pander to their illiterate third world constituency.

Chris Matthews thought the storm was a good thing, too. Disgusting that people would use it to get out of testing kids.

Yes, well everybody seems to be going through a post-traumatic stress situation. Taxpayers, who are going to be soaked for the Sandy clean up costs, the Obama healthcare for everyone costs, the tax hikes for more spending on anything but the taxpayers costs, are feeling a little trauma, and maybe should be excused from any payments this year.

Iran has signed a deal to sell Iraq arms and ammunition worth £117 million in a move that would break a UN embargo on weapons sales by Tehran. The agreement was reached at the end of November, documents showed, just weeks after Iraq’s prime minister Nouri al-Maliki returned from Washington, where he lobbied the Obama administration for extra weapons to fight al-Qaeda-linked militants. WASHINGTON — A new study reveals that nearly 33,000 jobs have been impacted due to the Affordable Care Act’s medical device excise tax. The report comes from the Advanced Medical Technology Association following an online survey of member companies last year. “According to the report, the tax has led to employment reductions of approximately 14,000 industry workers and foregone hiring of 19,000 workers,” the study stated. “The total job impact of the tax on industry employment was approximately 33,000.” Stephen J. Ubl, CEO of AdvaMed, said this tax needs to be repealed. “During a time when there is bipartisan

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former and possibly future first daughter came to Kansas City on Monday to launch an effort to honor women. Chelsea Clinton spoke to an enthusiastic crowd at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, sharing her passion for efforts that help boost women and girls. "How far have women come, and how far do we have to go?" she said. She told the audience that those questions are less philosophical than practical. She said she buries herself in the world of the Clinton Foundation to make sure she's doing her part. Another reason she was in Kansas City is to help establish the Starr Women's Hall of Fame,

Since 1998, the average rate of Earth’s rising global surface temperature has relaxed, much to the chagrin of climate scientists whose climate-model predictions told a different story. Now, researchers say they’ve found the cause of Earth’s global warming “hiatus.” According to a new study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, volcanoes are the reason the average rate of warming dropped from .31 degrees Fahrenheit per decade between 1970 and 1998 to .072 degrees Fahrenheit per decade between 1998 and 2012. This “muted surface warming” was the result of a series of 17 small volcanic eruptions, beginning in 2000, that spewed

We´ve paid plenty of attention here at KCET to the problems caused for desert tortoises when their habitat is replaced with renewable energy facilities. But now one scientist is saying that big solar facilities in the Mojave could seal the desert tortoise´s fate in a way you might not expect. One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey

Barack Obama´s parents were "married in name only," according to David Maraniss´s 2012 Barack Obama: The Story. The most dangerous parts of a flight are takeoff and landing. Rarely do incidents happen when a plane is cruising seven miles above the earth. Hi, everybody. This week, I traveled to New England, where I was joined by four governors who are working to raise the minimum wage in each of their states. And they’ve also joined me in calling on Congress to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour. Because it would give nearly 800,000 Americans in their states a raise — and lift wages for about 28 million across the country. So these governors aren’t waiting for Congress to make up its mind. And in my State of the Union Address, I asked America’s business leaders to go ahead and do what they could to raise their employees’ wages, too.
