| New Jersey’s Republican Governor, Chris Christie, recently sat down with Barbara Walters for a lengthy interview. In a clip of the interview broadcast on ABC’s Good Morning America, Walters asks Christie repeatedly about the “elephant in the room” which is, in her opinion, the governor’s weight. “I feel very uncomfortable asking you this question when I’m sitting opposite you,” Walters prefaced her inquiry. “You are a little overweight.” “More than a little,” Christie replied. “Why,” she asked.“If I could figure that out, I’d fix it,” he answered.

How is his weight even relevant? W. H. Taft was at least Christie´s size, and not only did he do just fine as President and Chief Justice, but lived to be 73 (longer than average lifespan then). Whether or not you like Christie (I am definitely not a fan), I think any fair-minded person would agree that he should be judged by the weight of his character, judgment, and record, not percentage of body fat.

An unfortunate story on CBS New York Thursday carried this headline: "Officials: 80 Percent Of Recent NYC High School Graduates Cannot Read." It´s a shocker, but it´s also untrue. And to make things worse, the story that followed was riddled with typos. According to the New York Post, which reported the same story earlier on Thursday, "79.3 percent of city public-school grads who went to CUNY’s six two-year colleges arrived without having mastered the basics" of reading, writing, and math, and had to take non-credit remedial classes to catch up.
