´Our appearance does not define us´:
Lauren Scruggs makes emotional
video to mark year anniversary of her
propeller accident

Daily Mail [UK], by James Nye

Original Article

Posted By:earlybird, 12/12/2012 11:06:59 AM

One year after her horrific injury, Lauren Scruggs has spoken of how she sees her accident in a positive light and how it has caused her to re-examine what is important. Calling aspects of her career ´shallow´, the model and fashion blogger from Texas said that she wants to use her experiences to tell young girls ´that our appearance is not what defines us.´ Appearing on E!Online, Scruggs, 24, also credited her faith with restoring her body and mind and claimed that her airplane accident shows ´that god has a different plan and often times it is shocking and unexpected.´

Comments:
She lost her left eye and her left hand. She has made an astonishing recovery.

I have worked around small aircraft for many years, flown them, babied them and adored them. I could not tell you how many times I have seen people behaving carelessly around them with the engine(s) running and the props only inches away. Spinning props are literally invisible to the eye. I watched a woman who is quite famous modern aviator nearly walk into her prop at an airshow once. Her assistant quickly reached out and grabbed her just inches from the impending disaster. She was waving to the crowd, walking to her plane and it very nearly happened. I am saddened by the comments below the article regarding how stupid the girl was to walk into a prop. Believe me, it happens all the time.People seldom survive the horrific result.

I declare right up front that I´m no authority on "models and fashions," but it seems a little odd that somebody who blogs about models and fashion would say "our appearance does not define us." What´s the message of the rest of her model-and-fashion postings?

I´m happy she has recovered so well. Having watched "Raiders of the Lost Ark," I will NEVER walk into a spinning prop!

#2 -- I agree. But maybe she´s trying to show that she learned a lesson.

She has gotten a lot of publicity for this -- not unexpected that it would get some, but she´s gotten interviewed over and again. Makes me wonder a bit...

Glad she´s doing well.

Obama´s Funny or Die

President Barack Obama’s appearance on funnyordie.com’s parody show “Between Two Ferns,” where he took mock questions from comic Zach Galifianakis, was a lot of things: funny, unusual, an intriguing way to sell Obamacare and very popular. One thing it was not, though, was an “interview” — unless you’re White House press secretary Jay Carney. Carney was defending the administration’s aggressive campaign to get young people to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. BURBANK, Calif.—A 3-year-old boy who fell out of a third-story window in Burbank was saved by a quick-acting couple who threw a mattress out to break his fall. KABC-TV reports Konrad Lightner and his wife, Jennifer, were moving out of their apartment Sunday when they noticed the toddler and his sister throwing their toys out the window. When they saw the little boy throw his leg over the window sill, Konrad rushed to put the mattress down. He was able to break the child’s fall, placing him onto the mattress. The toddler was taken to a local hospital for evaluation,

California public health officials say 19 of the 32 cases of measles they have confirmed so far this year are in people who had not been vaccinated, and of that group, 14 were intentionally not vaccinated. As the number of measles cases continues to grow across the state — there were only three by this time last year — officials at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) have urged parents against opting out of vaccinating their children. They say an increase in the number of people choosing not to vaccinate could drive a resurgence of the respiratory disease, since

VILNIUS, Lithuania—Vice President Biden’s we’re-all-in-this together tour of Eastern Europe, a two-country stop that concludes here Wednesday, has highlighted not only the growing regional anxieties over Russia’s designs on Ukraine but also how much work the Obama administration has to do to convince allies of its support. At its core, Biden’s message here and in Poland was a simple reaffirmation of what one senior administration official called a “bedrock commitment”: The United States would honor NATO’s basic premise that if one member nation is attacked, all would come to its defense. France will restrict auto use in Paris beginning Monday in an effort to reduce dangerous pollution levels in the country’s capital. Paris’ high number of private car drivers and France’s diesel subsidies make the city more susceptible to high levels of smog than other European capitals, and a recent week of a warm, sunny weather has made the air quality worse, Reuters reports. Paris has 147 micrograms of particulate matter per cubic meter of air, compared with 81 in Berlin and 79.7 in London. The plan being introduced Monday calls for drivers to only use their cars on alternate days

The words came out of my mouth before I could stop them. “I feel sorry for Obama,” I said. As my wife looked at me in disbelief, I quickly added a correction. “Well, almost.” Beset by failures at home and abroad, the president cuts a lonely and sad figure these days. His aura of grief reflects his profound loss. His worldview crashed headlong into reality, and reality won. Obamaism is dead, may it rest in peace. Health industry officials say ObamaCare-related premiums will double in some parts of the country, countering claims recently made by the administration. The expected rate hikes will be announced in the coming months amid an intense election year, when control of the Senate is up for grabs. The sticker shock would likely bolster the GOP’s prospects in November and hamper ObamaCare insurance enrollment efforts in 2015. The industry complaints come less than a week after Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius sought to downplay concerns about rising premiums in the healthcare sector. She told lawmakers rates would increase in 2015 but

Government officials now admit the data system and transponder quit communicating after the pilots said things were OK. That means they didn’t lie. The official Malaysian account of the last contacts made to and received by Flight MH370 is unraveling. As it does, the sinister interpretations of what happened in the cockpit of the Boeing 777 become less persuasive. We return to the all-important timeline. Originally, the Malaysians said that the last words from the cockpit—from the copilot, “All right, good night”—were spoken to air traffic controllers as the airplane left Malaysian air space at 1:30am.
