National Grid walloped
with $18M fine for botched
’11 storm response

Boston Herald, by Christine McConville

Original Article

Posted By:JoniTx, 12/11/2012 2:03:48 PM

National Grid is being slapped with a whopping $18.7 million fine for a “fundamental failure” in its response to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm — and must undergo a comprehensive management audit, the Department of Public Utilities announced this morning. The utility’s response to the storms represented a “systematic and fundamental failure,” said DPU chair Ann Berwick. Thousands of Bay Staters lost power for days last year, first in the aftermath of Irene and then a freak blizzard.

So who is going to ´wallop´ the Dept. of Public Utilities for the mess they haven´t handled well in the case of Sandy? How many weeks have those poor people been without power? Talk about a ´systemic and fundamental failure´!

No big deal. It just gets passed on to the rate payers.

Absurd!
The "fine" will be paid by the same customers who lost power. But the individuals who screwed up the National Grid will be rewarded for doing all the extra work required to do the "comprehensive management audit"

Sigh.....we lost power in NY for a few days then too. It seems to me that they are fining National Grid for failing to be perfect and for failing to put in an infrastructure that would remain intact in a 100 years storm. But if all utilities put in that kind of infrastructure we´d have Con Ed rates everywhere (more than 20 cents/kwh) and nobody is willing to pay those, and even if they are, it´s simply not a good use of resources.

So yes, ratepayers will pay this, or stockholders will lose a dividend or two. It looks more like a quick one-time tax increase by a lawless government.

Oh, wait, let me get my piggy bank...I´ve got just what you want...18 freekin CENTS, take it or leave it!

This is totally stupid, they will just pass it on to ratepayers. Sounds like a power/money grab by the Department of Public Utilities.

As the article states ... it was a freak storm.
How do you prepare for a freak storm???
Seems to me there is too much power in the hands of one broad.

We all know how well the Imperial Federal Government of Bureaucrats and Bureaucracies does with responses to national disasters. FEMA shows up to party and sight see. The official NGO - Red Cross - shows up so they can run nonstop ads soliciting $10 donations via text from big hearted Americans. And governors act like ladies in waiting for The Won to show up to be serviced - oops, I mean escorted - damn it´s hard to come up with the right term - shown the results of a terrible storm.

So, an $18 million dollar shakedown of an international energy conglomerate is par for the course.

Imagine that. A power company doing their part to reduce "green house emissions" is fined. Can´t win. The rate payers should pay more for this fine. Most voted for this crap.

Newtown killer Adam Lanza’s mother considered suing Sandy Hook Elementary School after teachers turned a blind eye to beatings from his classmates, a family member claims. The relative, speaking to the Daily News, claimed that mass murderer Lanza was taunted and attacked by fellow students at his childhood alma mater. “Nancy felt fiercely protective of him,” the relative said. “She was convinced the school wasn’t doing enough to protect Adam. It made her irate.” Nancy Lanza — gunned down by her 20-year-son to start his Dec. 14 rampage — even tagged along with Adam to school

Sally Bercow has snubbed an invitation to Margaret Thatcher´s funeral because she doesn´t want to ´be a hypocrite and join in this attempted canonisation of her´. In a statement issued today, she said: ´As Commons Speaker, John will be attending the funeral - and rightly so. JEFFERSON CITY — Republican lawmakers´ concerns about new driver´s license procedures are being exacerbated by the state´s unique system for marking concealed weapons endorsements. Missouri appears to be the only state whose license bureaus also issue concealed weapons endorsements in conjunction with driver´s licenses. In Missouri the endorsements are doled out by the sheriff´s office but the permits are printed by the Department of Revenue. Permit holders can choose whether they want to have the endorsement printed on their driver´s license or on a separate non-driving identification card. Of the roughly 178,000 concealed weapon permit holders, 174,450 Missourians choose

Some of Manhattan’s wealthiest neighborhoods are exploding in a wave of violent crime that hearkens back to the bad old days when people feared going out at night, according to NYPD data obtained by The Post. Chelsea, Gramercy Park, TriBeCa, SoHo and Midtown South all posted a frightening rise in rapes in the first three months of 2013 compared with the same period in 2012. Felony assaults in the usually peaceful West Village nearly tripled, the new crime statistics show. Greenwich Village’s 6th Precinct tied the Rockaways’ grimy 100th Precinct for the city’s biggest year-to-date overall

MOSCOW – Russia slapped sanctions on a pair of former top Bush administration officials, two former commanders of the Guantanamo detention center, and 14 other Americans in retaliation for a set of human rights sanctions the Obama administration imposed on a number of Russian citizens on Friday. In a statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it was forced to respond to the American “blackmail,” which it warned would harm US-Russia relations. The Kremlin had prepared a list of over 100 American officials in advance of Friday’s announcement, warning its response would be proportionate to the Obama administration’s actions.

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.

In Philadelphia, at a human abattoir on Lancaster Avenue, is where it ends, not where it starts. It starts with the perversion of language. It starts when the icons of a dissipated culture reduce a baby to a “fetus.” From there, Yeats’s blood-dimmed tide rolls rapidly in. Before long, a baby is not a person but a punishment, as President Barack Obama framed the matter in his familiar off-the-cuff iciness. With President Obama, there’s always a catch. In the 2014 budget he announced last week, Obama proposed a more accurate way of calculating the inflation rate for annual cost-of-living increases in Social Security. It’s a technical change in pursuit of honesty and good government. And if adopted, it would cause benefits to grow more slowly, though almost imperceptibly so. Republican leaders in Congress ought to be delighted since they had “championed”—Obama’s word—the idea in the first place. Then came the catch. The president’s price for adopting this gentle reform was hundreds of billions in new tax increases.

Here is something I don’t understand: liberals are often revealed as vile, vulgar hatemongers–not all of them, of course, but far too many–yet they never seem to pay a penalty at the polls. Why is that? Margaret Thatcher’s death has been the latest occasion for the Left to show its true stripes. All across the U.K., there have been demonstrations–vulgar at best, and violent at worst. In Bristol, lefties celebrating a Thatcher “death street party” started fires, destroyed property and battled police: This evening in Trafalgar Square, liberals have turned out for a long-planned celebration of Thatcher’s death:

LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends. Winters was a pioneer of improvisational standup comedy, with an exceptional gift for mimicry, a grab bag of eccentric personalities and a bottomless reservoir of creative energy.
