| Philipsburg, Pa. - Emma Whitehead has been bounding around the house lately, practicing somersaults and rugby-style tumbles that make her parents wince. It is hard to believe, but last spring Emma, then 6, was near death from leukemia. She had relapsed twice after chemotherapy, and doctors had run out of options. (Snip) The experiment, in April, used a disabled form of the virus that causes AIDS to reprogram Emma’s immune system genetically to kill cancer cells. The treatment very nearly killed her. But she emerged from it cancer-free, and about seven months later is still in complete remission.

My father died from leukemia fifteen years ago after a five year battle. [I was blessed to have been holding his hand when he died]. This cancer killed many of his family members, including his father. I suspect the "gene" may have been passed onto me.
My reason for posting is to marvel that a family chose to go for treatment for their daughter that was both "radical and way outside the box" for current medicine. But with 0bamaCare coming, how will hospitals and insurance pay for these kinds of very expensive procedures?

Ironically, The New York Times supports socialist medicine and socialist health care, which - they surely know - greatly diminishes the incentives and quality of R&D needed for medical breakthroughs such as this. But what are lives lost to disease compared to the glories of His Socialist Paradise?

This is a great story to start my day right. OP makes a point. This is the kind of research Obamacare would kill because it is so expensive on a per patient basis, and after all what is a seven year old girl worth--unless it´s your little girl, that is. Luckily, I think, the drug company supporting the research is Swiss and their philosophy is unique when it comes to unusual diseases. My wife works there at their Fort Worth offices. This success in Philadelphia is a real buzz in the office.
