In Girl’s Last Hope, Altered
Immune Cells Beat Leukemia

New York Times, by Denise Grady

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 12/11/2012 5:48:51 AM

Philipsburg, Pa. - Emma Whitehead has been bounding around the house lately, practicing somersaults and rugby-style tumbles that make her parents wince. It is hard to believe, but last spring Emma, then 6, was near death from leukemia. She had relapsed twice after chemotherapy, and doctors had run out of options. (Snip) The experiment, in April, used a disabled form of the virus that causes AIDS to reprogram Emma’s immune system genetically to kill cancer cells. The treatment very nearly killed her. But she emerged from it cancer-free, and about seven months later is still in complete remission.

Comments:
My father died from leukemia fifteen years ago after a five year battle. [I was blessed to have been holding his hand when he died]. This cancer killed many of his family members, including his father. I suspect the "gene" may have been passed onto me.

My reason for posting is to marvel that a family chose to go for treatment for their daughter that was both "radical and way outside the box" for current medicine. But with 0bamaCare coming, how will hospitals and insurance pay for these kinds of very expensive procedures?

Ironically, The New York Times supports socialist medicine and socialist health care, which - they surely know - greatly diminishes the incentives and quality of R&D needed for medical breakthroughs such as this. But what are lives lost to disease compared to the glories of His Socialist Paradise?

This is a great story to start my day right. OP makes a point. This is the kind of research Obamacare would kill because it is so expensive on a per patient basis, and after all what is a seven year old girl worth--unless it´s your little girl, that is. Luckily, I think, the drug company supporting the research is Swiss and their philosophy is unique when it comes to unusual diseases. My wife works there at their Fort Worth offices. This success in Philadelphia is a real buzz in the office.

What a wonderful story! I love reading positive human interest stories like this and it makes me think of my own Emma, my granddaughter, who lives in Oregon and is a living doll. Thanks for posting.

The High Court of Australia has given people who do not identify as male or female formal legal recognition. In a historic decision with far-reaching implications for institutions and individuals across the country, the court on Wednesday formally upheld the right of transgender person Norrie to be registered as neither a man nor a woman with the NSW registry of births, deaths and marriages. The decision is recognition by the highest court in the land that 'sex' is not binary - it is not only 'male' or 'female' - and that this should be recognised by the law and in basic legal documents. FoxNews.com reported Monday that the FBI was searching for a recent Army recruit known as "Booker, also known as Mohammad Abdullah Hassan" after obtaining an alert based on FBI intelligence and provided by the agency's Kansas City division. The alert, which the FBI sent to the U.S. Marine Corps, local police departments and other law enforcement agencies, was titled

Corruption Costs Dems

Two years ago, California Democrats celebrated victory in a decades-long struggle to win a supermajority in the Legislature, where a two-thirds majority is required for any tax increase. It was the latest chapter in a long descent into inconsequence by California Republicans, who hold no statewide offices and party registration of only 29.3 percent of the voters. But corruption has achieved what the Republicans could not. The supermajority is now down the drain as three of the Golden State’s 27 Democratic state senators have within the past two months been convicted or indicted on charges ranging from bribery to gun-running.

Janet Yellen, Chairwoman of the Federal Reserve, surveying the state of the economy, said that even now, almost five years after the official end of the Great Recession, it remains harder for Americans to find jobs than in the midst of a typical downturn. For those who are working, wages are rising more slowly than usual. “There remains no doubt that the economy and the job market are not back to normal health,” Ms. Yellen said. “The recovery still feels like a recession to many Americans and it also looks that way in some economic statistics.” Five years, now, since the “official end” of the recession and longer than that, of course,

There are two very clear and very different political paths before Paul Ryan right now. 1. Down this path lies a presidential bid in 2016, a race in which the Wisconsin Republican would enter as a top-tier candidate if not, perhaps, the race´s frontrunner. 2. Down this path lies the chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee in the 114th Congress and, eventually, a chance to be the Speaker/House Minority Leader. (Snip) But, in conversations with a variety of current and former Republican Capitol Hill aides, there´s little doubt that the Wisconsin Republican is the clear frontrunner to take the gavel in 2015 if he wants it.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - It may mean little to investigators that the last words air traffic controllers heard from the lost jetliner were "Good night, Malaysian three-seven-zero," rather than "All right, good night." But to Malaysian officials whose credibility has been questioned almost from the beginning, it means a great deal. Malaysian officials said more than two weeks ago that "All right, good night," were the last words, and that the co-pilot uttered them. They changed the account late Monday and said they are still investigating who it was that spoke. The discrepancy added to the confusion and frustration families

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) unveiled a spending proposal Tuesday that would slash more than $5 trillion in federal spending over the next decade mostly by repealing President Obama´s signature health law. (Snip) Ryan uses his final budget to reject a tax overhaul advocated by the outgoing Ways and Means chairman, Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.), who announced plans to retire on Monday. The Ryan budget does not contain a counter proposal to Camp´s, except to reassert the goal of a top individual tax rate of 25 percent and collapsing the current seven individual income-tax brackets into two brackets.

A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. But then February came, and February always stinks. It’s just a lousy month. You’re tired of winter, you’re still miles away from spring, and no one was signing up for Obamacare. That 7 million figure looked totally unreachable. So Sebelius does what every other member of the Obama administration does when confronted with inconvenient facts. She lied. They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease.
