| A seven and 11-year-old boy pulled a loaded gun on an Oregon woman during an attempted carjacking and robbery outside a church parking lot, police said on Sunday. Armed with a .22 caliber handgun, cocked and loaded, police in Portland say the described 11-year-old delinquent, seen back on the streets today, and his 7-year-old accomplice were caught while trying to flee on Saturday afternoon. ´They told me they were going to blow my brains out if I didn´t give them something,´ 22-year-old victim Amy Garrett recalled to KATU on Sunday while still visibly shaken.

I´m sorry, but this story is plainly false. It is illegal for or kids this young to have a gun, and we all know that laws prevent gun crimes. Why, if this could actually happen, it would mean that more laws would not prevent gun crimes. We might even find that the places with the most laws restricting guns would have the highest rates of gun crimes.
Hey, wait a minute....

Syracuse NY is suffering through a rash of burglaries being done by 11 and 12 year old lads, some of them repeat offenders, after being released by the authorities. I expect to see more and more of this sort of thing. The lads and their single mommies know that nothing will happen to them.

A 22 cal round is surprisingly deadly. The reason why she didn´t grab the kids is because their experience is with video games, where if you shoot someone they get back up if you press the right buttons. This lady would have been dead. She had every right to be afraid, and she did the right thing. The kids should have been arrested and sent to juvie. I think at common law children under seven couldn´t form the mens rea to be convicted of a crime, but neither of these kids was under seven. So, off to the joint with you. The mistake was on the part of the "justice" system.

First: their parents created these young criminals and are responsible for their upbringing and their criminality. Immoral/amoral child-rearing. Go after the parents and include them in the attempt to salvage these young people (if in fact they are salvageable). Second: These people are on the fast track to murder. We must not be misled by their youthful appearance and chronological ages. In Africa in the last 20 years "soldiers" as young as 8 years old have been drafted into various "revolutionary" (i.e. "criminal") organizations and are very effective and conscienceless murderers. All they know is violence and "reprogramming" may well be impossible in many cases. Get these murderers-in-the-making off the streets before they murder some good person.

I know that kids can sometimes go completely out of control but this is ridiculous. They should be punished by their parents and by the law. Do their parents actually care about what they did? The law needs to punish them and the parents should be there as back-up punishment.

I have never heard of someone too young to imprison in some fashion. Why didn´t child protective services take them ? No interview with the mother ?

Gay marriage is an issue of equality that fulfills America’s founding principles, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said during Wednesday’s press briefing. Earnest was responding to a reporter who asked whether President Obama feels his stance on gay marriage has “cleared the way” for others to support it publicly, noting Sen. Portman’s decision to support gay marriage earlier this month after his son announced he was gay.

Ruth C. Amen, a longtime office manager of Gulf to Bay Realty, a Boca Grande business, is now facing embezzlement charges after a surprise birthday party for her boss backfired into a paper trail of fraudulent transactions, according to a news release from the Lee County Sheriff´s Office. The 46-year-old Boca Grande woman was reportedly solely responsible for handling the company´s finances such as billing and payroll. It was Amen´s decision to pay for a surprise birthday bash for one of her bosses -- without permission -- that brought the fraudulent transactions to light.

n a story produced jointly with NPR, ProPublica.org, that new tax-exempt investigative-journalism outfit, puts forward what sounds like a smart proposal for improving the efficiency of the federal government: Imagine filing your income taxes in five minutes--and for free. You´d open up a pre-filled return, see what the government thinks you owe, make any needed changes and be done. The miserable annual IRS shuffle, gone. (Snip)So why hasn´t it become a reality? For two reasons, as it turns out. There is a plausible public-spirited argument against it and a venal interest group working to thwart it.

To put it plainly, the press briefing intending to indicate how President Barack Obama thinks about Israel on the eve of his trip here was a combination of fantasy and insult. It is likely that the Obama administration made such statements for show — to persuade the Arabic-speaking world that the United States is striving for peace, is not acting like a puppet (or should one say “ally”?) of Israel, and is using its influence to change Israeli policy even as it does nothing of the sort. As proof that Obama isn’t going to do anything,

When Benedict XVI was pope, the New York Times ran a scurrilous, distortion-infested campaign intended to link the former Joseph Ratzinger with the awful abuse scandals that have so harmed the Catholic Church. These pieces were manifestly dishonest and substance-free when you read them through. But the Times editors know most people don’t read the articles — they read the headlines and the first paragraph. So this morning, the pseudo-journalists at the Times began their campaign of lies against the new pope, Francis, under the damning (and damnable) headline: “Starting a Papacy, Amid Echoes of a ‘Dirty War’”:

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”
