According to Harry Reid the Tea Party was behind this new legislation in MI. I don´t think that´s true but what the heck, I´ll play along with Reid and say "Thank you Tea Party".

It has everything to do with economics. The union are taking money from employees and using that money to elect moronic politicians. Those politicians then support legislation and causes that negatively impact economics and thus the worker.

He really could be dumber than Biden. Unbelievable.

All I´ll do for now is note this: if unions really did benefit their members, they wouldn´t need legalized coercion of closed-shop laws to force new hires to join.

Economics is not Obama´s strong suit. Democrats as a group seem to have a lot of trouble with the dismal science. It is hard for them to think things through. Perhaps in some cases they do not want to think things through. But whether thought through or not, things march right along according to their own drummers, not the fantasy ideology of liberalism.

Here, for example, Obama seems to be arguing that by artificially inflating worker wages via closed union shops, workers will have more money to spend. There is no doubt about that. But he has not thought through questions such as where that money will come from, its opportunity cost, and what, precisely, it will be spent on. His assumption is that it will be spent upon American made goods and that this will benefit the economy. What will actually happen, of course, is that the artificially inflated wages will put the employers at a competitive disadvantage vis-a-vis overseas manufactures, and the overpaid union workers will -until their company relocates or goes out of business- spend their extra shekels on cheaper foreign made goods. This is what happened to, inter alia, the American auto industry.

The man is astonishingly ignorant, an economic illiterate, and an all-around horse´s backside.

The Taft Hartley act of 1947, at Section of the act allows a state to opt out of enforcing union shop agreements. (a union shop is defined as the requirement, under the collective bargaining agreement, for all members of the bargaining unit to pay union dues. 14(B) makes a union shop clause unenforceable. CALIFORNIA IS NOT A 14(B) STATE!
Taft Hartley deals with private sector collective bargaining, not public sector.
The argument offered by unions is that non members get the benefit of collective bargaining as free riders, because they pay no dues.
The argument from the workers is that the union spends part ofthe dues money to elect democrats, who don´t really represent the views of those non union workers.
Finally, state/local public sector unions do not have coverage under federal collective bargaining laws. Apples and oranges.

Just wondering if there is any connection between Michigan passing Right-to-Work laws and the Chinese buying Obama´s favorite stimulus-funded bankrupt battery maker A123 systems, which just HAPPENS to have 3 locations (main factories?) in Michigan?

I wonder if the Chinese were more willing to fork over the big bucks, as they don´t have to deal with a ´closed shop´ union environment?

The unions typically hire non-union clerical workers.

The clerical workers went out on strike in the port of Los Angeles and took a large bite out of the CA economy. The strike greatly hurt the port and therefore the available money to pay employees. When the host die, so do the parasites.

When GM was bailed out, the core issues were not fixed. GM will shortly need another bailout.

Right-to-Work = anti-Thug & anti-earnings-confiscation.

You don´t have to belong to a union to bargain for these things. Unions just make it easier for slackers and malcontents to get the pay raises and stuff like the good workers- as long as they pay their union dues.

This country was founded on the principle of individual freedom not thug rule. There is nothing in this legislation that inhibits someone from joining any group they choose, the significant word is "choose".

The people are making their choices at the grass roots level since it is obvious that their wants and desires are being ignored in Washington D.C. Barack Obama better get used to the idea that getting elected on a campaign of race, class, and gender division just may backfire when the folks realize that there is no there there! If the congress doesn´t catch on quick they will suffer a mass electoral defeat in 2014 regardless of party.

I wonder if unionized Michiganders have heard that the judge who approved the GM bankruptcy deal has reopened the issue now that he knows details were hidden from him. What was hidden, as I understand it, were details of the redistribution of assets. He was lied to, doesn´t like it one damn bit, and could well undo the deal.
