Paradise Lost: CA to Provide Free Cell Phones for Homeless

| In California, the unemployment rate may be above 10.2%, and the state debt may be above $16 billion, the state’s GDP may be in serious trouble and businesses may be leaving in droves due to ever-increasing tax rates, but that isn’t going to stop the gravy train for the state’s poor and dispossessed. The California Public Utilities Commission is all set to greenlight a new program that would give homeless and low-income people free cell phones – call them Obamaphones – with free service. The idea is to help them reach out to possible job opportunities and stay connected with family.
|
Comments: No mention of drug dealers, loan sharks, etc. They should be hardwired to local "unemployment office" that forwards their calls to potential employers. That way, they can be tracked on both ends of a job application by the State.
Why is Federal government giving phones to a person in an individual state & how are they paying both cellphone maker & phone company? Anyone care in LSM to check this out? [Are we secretly paying with some obscure addition to our phone bill?]

What address will the homeless list on the application form if they are homeless? How will the state get the phone back if they want it returned. Will the state contact the homeless person`s family they are supposedly staying in contact with to see if they are capable of housing the homeless, thus making them unhomeless and therefore not in need of a free cell phone?
This is sheer madness. Add to this fiasco the bullet train and free everything for illegals and Calif is on the fastrack to disaster.

Oh that does it! With all the thousands and thousands of dollars I pay this state, they want more to give phones to a bunch of illegals and drug addicts? Forget it, I am going to shut off my family plan that costs me over $200/mo and get us all free Obamaphones. Why should I keep paying and paying and get NOTHING but stress and heartache in return? I don´t feel guilty either.

After calling 311 to find a free bed for the night, will the phone recipient then get a free taxi ride to the location if it´s in another part of the city? What about dinner on the way there? The taxpayer funded spending possibilities are endless.

Well, hey, they can´t accept all those job offers without a phone. Dontcha know.
I´ve actually seen that as a justification for giving cell phones to the homeless. Most of whom probably think it´s a night light.

This wouldn´t actually be an obamaphone - That´s national.
It would be a brownphone - That´s state provided.
Just couldn´t imagine bringing something that looks like a chocolate covered candy bar floating in a swimming pool up to my ear.

I recently terminated service on my cell phone simply because I couldn´t justify the expense. The taxes I pay would probably pay for about 100 of these phones and the service per year. If I can do without, so can they.

There´s a homeless man in our neighborhood, who slept in the park and went around collecting cans.
He got ours and over time started doing occasional odd jobs.
The jobs and his responsibilities increased over a year or so and we let him stay in the garage for a few months.
He took on more jobs and responsibilities around our home and in the neighborhood.
He is now trusted to do store runs with my credit card and we moved him into the downstairs apartment when it started getting cold.
A couple of months ago, I got him a cellphone and make sure he has prepaid time each month.
He will always be welcome in our home and eats holiday meals with us and I make sure he has food and yes, beer.
He watches over our home and the neighbors´ and takes his responsibilities very seriously.
He has become a contributing member to society ...
... no one ever gave him the chance and his demons got the best of him.
He is now off the street, does his chores and is healthier and happier than he´s ever been.
He earned that.
Charity begins at home.

When I drove hubby one day he finally noticed all of the homeless tents under every overpass and bridge in the downtown Long Beach area....hundreds of them. Where do they ´´go?´´ Will they be getting ´´free phones,´´ too? There must be a thousand people living in tents between the ocean and the San Diego freeway off the 710.

I have a theory, looking around the scroungier areas in my part of the country.
I believe that there used to be the Four Essentials of Low-Life Living, now increased to the Five Essentials of Low-Life Living. These seem to cut across all boundaries of culture, race, ethnicity, etc. You have people who live in a dump, no car, obviously no insurance, who scrounge quarters to take the laundry to the laundry-mat (won´t save up enough for a used washing machine) etc.
But they WILL have the following: (in no particular order)
#1 -Beer #2 -Cigarettes #3 -Cable TV #4 -Air Conditioning (it´s hot & humid here) and now, #5 -A Cell Phone (not necessarily thier own)
...just another crazy observation from a redneck in the Deep South.
Any comments?

Why not free iphones, ipads, and laptops and free internet service so they can look for jobs on Craigs List? The idea is for them to be able to deal drugs more efficiently, and sell their food stamps for half face value in cash at the gas station.

Remember those months when Obe first passed through the standing godlike pillars and the journey to hell began. What the heck makes anyone think those phones will be the recharge kind-just toss them away when done and go get another.

There was a story in the paper recently about bums trying to tap into the base of street lights to get free electricity.

I will be losing my cell phone next week when my contract is up. Since I can´t afford a new contract, I´ll be utilizing pay-by-the-minute phones, but will only be able to use them for very important calls.
Next year, my 15 year-old car won´t pass the new regs on smog and safety, so I´ll be car-less for a while too.
It´s demoralizing and degrading to even think of getting an Obamaphone...or Obamacar...or anything thing with the cruel stamp of govt. dependency on it. My goal in life right now is to make it every day without someone else subsidizing my family. Ain´t Obamaville grand...

Welcome to the 21st century President Clinton! The chief executive who guided America on to the Information Superhighway revealed he didn’t have a Twitter page — until comedian Stephen Colbert got a handle on this low-tech travesty. Amazingly, Clinton said he was too shy and insecure to start his own Twitter page. (Snip) A laughing and mildly embarrassed Clinton took the bait, and dictated his first tweet under the @PrezBillyJeff handle. “Just spent amazing time with Colbert! Is he sane? He is cool! #cgiu” Colbert told the president: “Sir welcome to the future.”

San Francisco & New York - Google Inc said on Tuesday it plans to bring its ultra high-speed Internet and television service to Austin, Texas, next year, prompting AT&T Inc to reveal its own plans to follow suit - if it gets the same terms from local authorities. AT&T appeared to be making a political point to highlight the heavy regulations that encumber traditional phone companies, analysts said. Google promised to begin connecting homes in Austin by the middle of 2014 with a 1-gigabit-per-second Internet service, roughly 13 times faster than the speediest service AT&T had

Bahrain on Tuesday became the first Arab country to blacklist Hizbullah as a terrorist organization, the Al Arabiya network reports. The move came a week after the Bahraini parliament voted to label the group a terrorist organization. Its alleged backing and training of radical Shiite groups against Bahrain was the main reason given for the decision, the report said. The Bahraini cabinet has tasked the interior and foreign ministries with implementing the decision. “The measure is to protect Bahrain’s security and stability from Hezbollah’s threats,” Bahraini MP Adil al-Asoumi told Al Arabiya.

The biggest border crossing between North Korea and China has been closed to tourist groups, a Chinese official says, as nuclear tensions mounted, but business travel was allowed to continue. "Travel agencies are not allowed to take tourist groups to go there, since the North Korean government is now asking foreign people to leave," the official at the Dandong Border Office said. "As far as I know, business people can enter and leave North Korea freely," added the official, who declined to give his name, without making clear which country had ordered the move.

A source close to the politically active daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney tells The Daily Caller that she is still seriously considering running. Over the weekend, The Casper Star Tribune reported that Enzi told a meeting of the GOP state party committee that he is looking forward to running for re-election — something he has yet to formally announce. Bridgewater, N.J. - Like clockwork, they´re coming back -- after 17 years. "They" would be cicadas, the big, noisy bugs that climb out of the earth about every decade and a half to make everyone´s life more exciting. Experts tell Gannett News Service that the bugs live underground and feed off fluid that gathers near the roots of plants, then emerge from the soil when its temperature reaches 64 degrees. They´re largely harmless, but their sheer numbers can cause headaches. Some areas could see as many as a billion of the cicadas per square mile. That can lead to a lot of dead bugs all over roadways

"Today the streets of Caracas are full of happiness and hope, confirming what will happen next Sunday," Capriles, the 40-year-old governor of Miranda state, told the crowd. Capriles faces acting President Nicolas Maduro, who has vowed to continue the hard-line socialism of his late boss, Hugo Chavez, if he wins the April 14 election.

Snoop, 41, who has spoken in favor of marriage equality before, was asked by The Guardian if he believed the R&B singer´s declaration of having loved a man meant gay relationships would soon be accepted in the rap community. "Frank Ocean ain´t no rapper," Snoop is quoted as saying. "He´s a singer. It´s acceptable in the singing world, but in the rap world I don´t know if it will ever be acceptable because rap is so masculine."

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Although the first votes on gun -control legislation have yet to be cast, by some measures the National Rifle Association has already won. Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.
