RALEIGH, N.C. – A federal judge has ruled it is unconstitutional for North Carolina to issue pro-life license plates unless the state offers similar plates supporting abortion rights. U.S. District Court Judge James C. Fox ruled on Friday that North Carolina cannot produce or distribute the “Choose Life” plate. Judge Fox concluded, “The State’s offering of a Choose Life license plate in the absence of a pro-choice plate constitutes viewpoint discrimination in violation of the First Amendment.”
Alabama has Choose Life plates, although I can´t really afford to pay $75 for one. But why doesn´t the N.C. legislature just approve a plate for pro choice people? At least we would know who they are and avoid them whenever possible.
That is stupid because there is nothing that says "Choose Life" has to only be about abortion. It just means "choose life". That is all it means, technically. What an idiot judge. He doesn´t know anything about the Constitution. The Constitution is about "life" anyway!
Whatever makes no sense, democrats are all into it. The dumber the better. Choose death, that´s really good. Maybe this judge should put a plate on his car that says, choose death. The world would be better off.
If the NC guv had the spine, they could just ignore the judge. Just like the IRS, when they don´t like the results of a court case, they just say they´re not in compliance - basically daring the judge to do anything about it
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
1. Where in the wide, wide world of sports is "viewpoint discrimination" prohibited in the above? 2. The First applies to the US House and Senate ["Congress shall..."], not to state legislatures. 3. Sloganeering should be carried out on license plate frames, sold at retail, not incorporated into license plates. Their purpose is to identify a vehicle for traffic-law purposes. 4. Doesn´t look like the judge reasons rigorously. 5. Speaking of which -- the decision seems to require every matter to have only for or against sides. So, to offer one example, where would that leave the state´s agnostics? Though I guess they could put an atheist plate on the front of the car and a believer´s plate on the back. Or vice-versa. Maybe. 6. That, #4, is just a pro-sushi plate. 7. I do see a problem for Illinois. They´ll need much bigger plates to get a "Babies Not Killed by Abortions Should Die Without Medial Care in Hospital Linen Closets Like Obama Wants" on them.
Those who are saying "Choose Death" is the correct opposite are exactly correct. The "Choose Life" slogan is not the literal opposite of "Pro Choice," and any claim that it is should be fought vigorously in court.
They want to have an equal voice? Let them take the precise opposite position.
But they have achieved (for now) their primary purpose, to silence those who call a life a life.
Progressive liberal obfuscation at its best. The judiciary is has become the champions of advancing the liberal agenda and have ceased to even try to project the appearance of even handed arbitrators. How a "choose Life" slogan offends against the First Amendment defies even the most creative "umbra within the penumbra" imagination.
On Tuesday, CBS This Morning pounced on a new study by the Center for Media and Public Affairs (CMPA) showing that President Obama is now the butt of more jokes on late night TV than any other politician. "Since his re-election, late-night comedians have aimed 300 jokes at the President," CBS´s Jeff Pegues announced. "That´s only 100 fewer than all of those directed at Republican politicians combined." But the real news is how, in two presidential campaigns and in his first term as President, Obama has largely evaded the harsh barbs of TV´s comics.
Al Qaeda terrorists may have developed undetectable liquid bombs prompting America to evacuate its citizens from Yemen, it emerged today. The explosive would be applied wet to clothing and then detonated when dry, according to senior US officials. Security experts fear it would be completely undetectable using the current range of security devices operated at airports across the world. Scroll down for video -The terrifying technology is thought to be the work of Al-Qaeda´s master bomb-maker Ibrahim al-Asiri who is linked to the Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) group based in the Yemen.
Former White House chief of staff Bill Daley is prominently featuring the iconic photograph of the Situation Room during the raid to kill terrorist leader Osama bin Laden on his new campaign site. Daley, who is running for governor of Illinois, features the picture under a marker proclaiming, "This is what leadership looks like," on the homepage of his recently launched website. "As President Obama´s chief of staff, Bill played a key role in the operation that captured Osama bin Laden," the image caption reads.
The Army psychiatrist serving as his own lawyer in the bloody Fort Hood rampage called himself a "mujahideen" and told a military jury Tuesday the dead bodies he left in his wake in the 2009 incident "show that war is an ugly thing." Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan began his court martial with an opening statement less than two minutes long as the military trial began under heavy security at the Texas base. He faces the death penalty for the Nov. 5, 2009 rampage, in which 13 people were killed and where witnesses said Hasan yelled "Alahu Akhbar!"
On Monday morning, a Republican National Committee spokeswoman revealed that a major announcement was coming about the future of the Republican presidential primary process. In that moment, full of promise, the future of the Republican Party looked bright. Perhaps the GOP had finally gotten serious about the profoundly broken methods by which it selects its nominee to become the most powerful person on the planet. But that hopeful moment was only a mirage. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus declared later that day that his announcement was merely a public relations ploy aimed at antagonizing an old foe –
Two brothers were shot to death in the Far South Side´s West Pullman neighborhood early this morning, police said. The shootings happened about 3:40 a.m. in the 100 block of East 120th Street, police said. The brothers, 35 and 38, were in the front seats of a 2010 Dodge Charger when shots were fired, striking one of them in the chin and the other in the face, News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said. The older brother was identified as LeAndre Cooper and the younger brother was identified as Demetrius Cooper, according to the Cook County medical examiner´s office.
President Barack Obama’s job approval dropped to the lowest level of his second term during the week of July 29 to Aug. 4, when 45 percent of respondents told the Gallup poll they approved of the job the president was doing and 48 percent said they disapproved. In the previous week, which ended on July 28, Obama´s approval had been 46 percent in the Gallup poll and his disapproval had been 47 percent. The last time Obama’s weekly approval dropped to 45 percent or below in the Gallup poll was
WASHINGTON —In a few days, President Obama and his family will arrive on Martha’s Vineyard for a family vacation. For centuries, Martha’s Vineyard and the town of Oak Bluffs in particular has been the epicenter of black elitism. It has been said, “it does not matter where America’s wealthy black families winter … they summer in Martha’s Vineyard.” The island has often been called self-segregated, with most African-Americans residing in Oak Bluffs. Its harbor drew freed slaves, laborers and sailors in the 18th century, and white locals sold them land. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, middle-class blacks
A pair of suspected U.S. drone strikes killed four al Qaeda militants in Yemen as the United States maintained a heightened security alert in the country and urged all Americans to leave immediately. Security sources told CNN about the strikes but didn´t offer additional details. A Yemeni official said four drone strikes have been carried out in the past 10 days. None of those killed on Tuesday were among the 25 names on the country´s most-wanted list, security officials said. It is unclear whether the strikes were related to the added security alert in the country after
DALLAS – During President George W. Bush’s annual physical examination at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas yesterday, a blockage was discovered in an artery in his heart. At the recommendation of his doctors, President Bush agreed to have a stent placed to open the blockage. The procedure was performed successfully this morning, without complication, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. President Bush is in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule on Thursday. He is grateful to the skilled medical professionals who have cared for him. He thanks his family, friends, and fellow citizens
Vague terrorist threats shutting down nineteen of our embassies, Russian strongman Putin thumbing his nose at President Obama, Iran jerking our chain – the U.S. hasn’t looked this cowardly on the world stage since the Jimmy Carter administration. Here at home, too, we’ve gone back to the Carter future; unemployment is high, Keynesian economics are all the rage, our professorial president is increasingly whiny and ineffectual; all that’s missing is a cardigan sweater and that infernal violin. Our recent contre-temps with Russia is a throw-back to the weak-kneed Carter era.
Two state GOP chairmen on Monday quickly endorsed Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus’s demand that CNN and NBC drop two movie projects about the life of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The GOP chiefs from the two early voting primary states vowed to not cooperate with the networks on any 2016 presidential primary debates. [Tweets] Priebus on Monday wrote to the heads of NBC and CBS and threatened to not partner with them on 2016 debates if they went ahead with plans to air two films about Clinton, a possible Democratic contender.
In 2008 and then again in 2012, after retired four-star General Colin Powell endorsed and then voted for Barack Obama, the former Secretary of State´s sanity was already in question. At least now, after having his email account hacked by high-level security-breacher Guccifer, Colin Powell´s besmirching of the Republican Party´s "shift to the right" and "identity crisis" finally makes sense. It seems that for years the mannerly and always professional Colin Powell has been cyber-comporting with a 46-year-old Romanian European Parliament member, Social Democrat, and past spokesperson for Romanian president Ion Iliescu named Corina Cretu
Conservatives have for years attempted to put our finger upon precisely why Barack Obama strikes us as queer in precisely the way he does. There is an alienness about him, which in the fever swamps is expressed in all that ridiculous Kenyan-Muslim hokum, but his citizen-of-the-world shtick is strictly sophomore year — the great globalist does not even speak a foreign language. Obama has been called many things — radical, socialist — labels that may have him dead to rights at the phylum level but not down at his genus or species. His social circle includes
For nearly a year, we have had no answer to why the administration lied about Benghazi — why it told the world, not to mention the parents of our murdered SEALs at the funeral of their sons, that the cause of that fatal conflagration was an anti-Islamic video no one saw, when the various arms of our executive branch (White House, State and intelligence) already knew, or strongly suspected, it was a terror attack orchestrated by al-Qaeda affiliates. You only have to read the now infamous talking points to know that. That this lie was deeply immoral is obvious.
Today, across Africa, Araby and Asia, from Nouakchott to Dhaka, the diplomatic facilities of the United States are closed. There’s a Tsarnaev out there, somewhere – could be the Mahgreb, the Levant, the Horn of Africa, the Indian sub-continent – who knows? So, as Richard Fernandez writes, “Shelter in place, this time globally.” Maybe it will work. Maybe by the end of the day there will be, unlike Benghazi a year on, men in custody. But if not? Daniel Pipes: Don’t know about you, but I find this pre-emptive cringing unworthy of a great country, even humiliating.
He thought he was a woman trapped in a man’s body — but it turns out he’s “just another boring straight guy.” ABC News editor Don Ennis strolled into the newsroom in May wearing a little black dress and an auburn wig and announced he was transgender and splitting from his wife. He wanted to be called Dawn. But now he says he suffered from a two-day bout of amnesia that has made him realize he wants to live his life again as Don. “I accused my wife of playing some kind of cruel joke, dressing
Not only should President Obama cancel a bilateral summit with "schoolyard bully" Russian President Vladimir Putin, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Sunday on "Face the Nation," but considering the country granted asylum to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, U.S. allies should try to move next month´s G-20 gathering from St. Petersburg. "President Putin´s behaving like a schoolyard bully, and in my experience, I´ve learned, unless you stand up to that bully, they ask for more and more and more," Schumer said. "He´s always going out of his way, President Putin is, to seem to poke us in
In an interview for The Guardian Weekend magazine, actor Matt Damon recently weighed in with his thoughts on how President Barack Obama has handled the scandals that have engulfed his administration since the spring. Damon, a vocal supporter of the president since his 2008 campaign for national office, said that Obama is overcompensating for his lack of military background with his tough response to controversies like how the government is responding to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. The actor said that Obama is allowing himself to “get bullied” and is acting as though is “manhood”
The truth about Benghazi, the Associated Press/James Rosen monitoring, the IRS corruption, the NSA octopus, and Fast and Furious is still not exactly known. Almost a year after the attacks on our Benghazi facilities, we are only now learning details of CIA gun-running, military stand-down orders, aliases of those involved who are still hard to locate, massaged talking points, and the weird jailing of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. We still do not quite know why Eric Holder’s Justice Department went after the Associated Press or Fox News’s James Rosen — given that members of the administration were themselves illegally leaking
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus threatened to pull the group’s partnership with NBC and CNN for 2016 GOP presidential primary debates if the networks moved ahead with plans to air films on Hillary Clinton. “If they have not agreed to pull this programming prior to the start of the RNC’s Summer Meeting on August 14, I will seek a binding vote stating that the RNC will neither partner with these networks in 2016 primary debates nor sanction primary debates they sponsor,” Preibus said in a statement. In individual letters to CNN President Jeff Zucker and NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt,
Oprah Winfrey on Monday said the killings of Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till are the "same thing." This transpired during an interview with The Grio that aired on NBC´s Today show. OPRAH WINFREY: It´s so easy during this time: Trayvon Martin, Trayvon Martin parallel to Emmett Till, let me just tell you. In my mind, same thing. But you can, you can get stuck in that and not allow yourself to move forward and to see how far we´ve come. Really? Martin and Till are the same thing?
Michelle Obama took to Twitter on Sunday to send her husband an affectionate birthday message -- and a gentle ribbing about the US President´s graying hair. "Happy birthday, Barack! Your hair´s a little grayer, but I love you more than ever," Michelle Obama wrote on her official twitter account, @FLOTUS. The message was accompanied by an undated black and white photo of the Obamas as a young couple relaxing on a sofa. Barack Obama is spending his 52nd birthday weekend at Camp David, the rural Maryland retreat made available to US Presidents. He was to return
In an exclusive interview for The Grio, NBCUniversal’s African-American news and opinion website, Oprah Winfrey weighed in with her unvarnished thoughts on the killing of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of George Zimmerman. Winfrey said that, in her mind, Martin’s murder and that of Emmett Till in 1955 – whose killers were also acquitted – were the “same thing.” However, she added that it is important to keep in mind how much race relations in America have progressed over the last half-century. In a clip of the interview which aired on NBC’s Today, Oprah told The Grio’s Chris
