| A 27-year-old mother of two has been fatally shot by an off-duty sheriff´s deputy after he suspected her of shoplifting at a Houston Walmart. Harris County Sheriff´s deputies have said that victim Shelly Frey, Tisa Andrews and Yolanda Craig were stealing when they were confronted by Louis Campbell a 26-year veteran of the force who works as a security guard at the store. According to Campbell the women ran to their car and when he rushed to open the door, they accelerated away - at which point he fired the deadly shot into the car which hit Frey in the neck.
|
Comments: Can´t work up a lot of sympathy for this woman. She was clearly shoplifting, then tried to drive away after the cop opened her car door. She migrated to Houston from New Orleans after Katrina.
The poor cop will probably lose his job, though.

The family is probably already working on an excessive force and wrongful death suit.
Remember the pharmacist who got jail time for shooting a robber too many times.Meanwhile the football player who shot his GF 9 times is praised for thanking his coaches for a chance. The players mother who watched the shooting and didn´t intervene is now getting the baby´s upkeep allotment for years to come.

Will not judge yet, but the media are largely inaccurate on this sort of thing, and often intentionally.
They lied about George Zimmerman, and they are probably have at LEAST partial information here. Typically when someone in a car is shot by an officer, it is because they are trying to run him down.
Notice no comments from the officer. Always two sides to a story.

#4, has it already been settled that Mr. Belcher´s mother will raise that baby. I am sure a battle will take place about that and if the team had any brains, they would stipulate that whatever family that gets her is put on a tight money diet so they don´t drain her account.
Our country is experiencing an evil quakening where people are doing stupid horrific things to eachother. It´s too easy to blame this on the effects of being an obama voter. I prefer to know what is it and be prepared for it.

Another version has the guard inside the open car door trying to have her stop and get out of the car, then the driver puts the car in reverse trying to escape but which could have killed the guard by trapping him under the car.
This makes sense, and if true, the perp got her just reward.

She tried to run over the deputy sheriff, who id´ himself as a Harris County Deputy Sheriff, he was wearing the uniform. She chose to steal, she chose to try and run him over by catching him with an open door of her vehicle. No she didn´t have to die but then she made the choice to be stupid. Instead of stopping and dealing with her actions, she decided to attempt to kill the officer to get away.

Not destitute women but professional thieves, who took children with them while they committed their crimes. The ´security guard´ was a trained Harris County deputy and was clearly identifiable as an officer of the law. The victim took her chances and this time lost the gamble. If she would have adhered to her earlier sworn promise, this never would have occurred - "Earlier in the year she pleaded guilty to stealing shirts and a package of meat from another Walmart and as part of her plea arrangement she agreed to never enter Walmart stores again".

Well, it appears that at the time of the shooting, the dead woman was using the car as a deadly weapon. Dummy.
When will people learn it is illegal to steal? They just keep getting away with it.
And one of the comments is very correct. Those children in the car will never forget it. Hopefully, they have learned a lesson.

A car is a deadly weapon, under some circumstances. In addition, I have read that Walmart´s policy on shoplifting is to just let them go... apparently the deputy sheriff didn´t get the message. (Why would he be wearing his official uniform when he was apparently working for Walmart??)

If this is a bad part of town, sometimes the owners of the shopping center (not Walmart) hire security for the site.
Near me, in what used to be a nicer part of ATL is now minority. A T J Maxx, etc, shopping area now had a need for security around the entire shopping area.

Whether or not the shooting was justified depends a lot on the exact sequence of events, who was where, and what they were doing.
As to the kids in the car ... we´re using human shields now at Walmart?

This wasn´t a ´mother´ as the Daily Mail oozes, this was a hardened criminal thief. The guard did the kids a favor, allowing them a chance to be raised by someone with noncriminal values instead of the monster that was supposedly their mother. The guard said he was endangered by her actions and his story seems to stand up. If the guard comes before me as a jurist, I´m letting him off with a full acquittal.

Years ago, I caught a woman putting her hand in my pocket in a shopping mall. She and the young child with her ran off, and I checked my wallet, only to find she had snagged some credit cards.
I called the police, and after waiting about an hour for one to show up, he told me there was nothing he could do, even if he could find the woman. She would have handed off the stolen cards to the child, who would have been instructed to put them in her underpants. The officers, under the law, could only arrest the woman if she had the stolen cards. They could not search the child. That´s one reason why thieves often have kids with them.
I won´t comment on this story until I know more. But as a thief was quoted in our local paper last week, "it´s the Christmas season. I need gifts and money."

Jefferson County, Colo. - A judge ruled on Friday that there is enough evidence for a teen to stand trial for murder and attempted abduction about an hour after prosecutors played a 911 tape where Austin Sigg admitted to killing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway and to trying to kidnap a female jogger. The five-minute recording played during a Friday preliminary hearing began with the teen´s mother, Mindy Sigg, calling 911 on the night of Oct. 23, 2012. "I need you to come to my house, my son wants to turn himself in for Jessica Ridgeway's murder," the mother tells a dispatcher.

Only four doctors in the U.S. offer third-trimester abortions, knowing they risk their own lives every day to carry out such controversial procedures. These doctors are the subject of a documentary screened at the Sundance film festival last weekend, forty years after the legalization of abortion in the U.S. and four years after Dr Tiller. Physician George Tiller was a prominent practitioner of late-term abortions shot dead by an extremist in 2009. The documentary After Tiller is named for him and focuses on the few remaining doctors who perform abortions in the third trimester of a pregnancy. The Supreme Court granted states the right to limit abortions in the final three months of a pregnancy.

Is the Washington National Cathedral the spiritual center of the nation? In the mind of the liberal Episcopal cathedral’s new dean, it should be. Such an assertion would surprise many of America’s churchgoers, the vast majority of whom are not even Oldline Protestants, let alone Episcopalians. But since assuming leadership of the Cathedral in October, Dean Gary R. Hall has frequently spoken of the church’s role as being “at the center” of American public life.

When it comes to becoming a physician, the academic rigors, years of schooling, and personal sacrifice common to the effort are well-known. This process is a sort of rite of passage, an intellectual marathon that only the best and brightest can complete. As such, medical schools should select candidates best-suited to excel throughout school and cultivate the skills that will allow them to practice in the best health care system in the world. The process by which these candidates are selected, however, may come as a shock.

When Joe Parker was a young, newly married public-school administrator who wanted to buy a home in 1974, he didn’t even think about leaving Prince George’s County, Maryland. It was where he and his parents had grown up. But when Parker first tried to bid on a house in a new development in Mitchellville, a small farming community that was sprouting ranch and split-level homes on old plantation lands, the real-estate agent demurred, claiming there were other buyers. In truth, the development had been built to lure white, middle-class families to the county

In a series of remarkably candid comments, Prince Charles hinted that he feared his legacy as king would be cut short. During a visit to Dumfries House, the stately home in East Ayrshire which the Prince helped save for the nation, he joked about his reputation for pursuing projects with notorious vigour but made a poignant reference to his mortality. He said: “Impatient? Me? What a thing to suggest! Yes of course I am.” He added: “I’ll run out of time soon. I shall have snuffed it if I’m not careful.”

The murder trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell largely is being ignored by the mainstream media, even in the face of grisly testimony, such as what we heard yesterday. Abortion clinic employee Sherry West described an incident which "really freaked (her) out" and related to the jury how she heard a child who was born alive following an abortion scream.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

Annette Funicello, the dark-haired darling of TV´s “The Mickey Mouse Club” in the 1950s who further cemented her status as a pop-culture icon in the ´60s by teaming with Frankie Avalon in a popular series of “beach” movies, died Monday. Chelsea Clinton has raised her profile in the last few days, which sparked the inevitable question about the former first daughter´s future: Will she ever be like Mom and Dad and run for office? Clinton, 33, essentially said "maybe" in an interview that aired Monday on NBC´s Today show. "Right now I´m grateful to live in a city, a state and a country where I strongly support my mayor, my governor, my president and my senators and my representative," said Clinton, whose father, Bill, was president from 1993-2001 and her mother, Hillary

More than 700 Special Operations veterans are urging members of Congress to back a select committee to investigate last year’s Benghazi terrorist attack, according to a letter first obtained by Fox News. The letter from the group, “Special Operations Speaks,” supports the appointment of a special committee tasked with the single mission of investigating the attack that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead, and shut down the CIA operation in an annex of the Benghazi consulate, in the Sept. 11, 2012 attack. “Congress must show some leadership and provide answers to the public

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

The case of a same-sex Connecticut couple accused of repeatedly raping and abusing two of their nine adopted boys is headed for trial. Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors. The men had already pleaded no contest in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor — a reduction from even more serious charges related to sexual assault....

More than six months since Ambassador Christopher Stevens was assassinated by terrorists in Benghazi, the Obama administration is still trying to keep a lid on information about the attack. Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Members of Congress have asked hundreds of questions at hearings conducted by several investigative committees, but many of the most significant have been left unanswered.
