Day 1 of Legal Pot Marred by Deaths
at Alleged Wash. Growing Center

ABC News, by Sarah Parnass

Original Article

Posted By:NorthernDog, 12/7/2012 4:45:11 PM

The first day of legal marijuana use in Washington State was marred by an attempted robbery ending with two deaths at an alleged pot-growing facility just south of Seattle. The possession of pot became legal in the state Thursday after voters passed a measure decriminalizing it in November. Day two kicked off with more celebrations under the Space Needle tower, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported, but the Pierce County Sheriff´s Department investigated an attempted robbery in Puyallup at an alleged growing center foiled by a homeowner who shot two alleged burglars in front of his 9-year-old son.

Comments:
If you are growing it, remember that lots of people out there will want to take it. It´s all about ´´fairness´´.

This behaviour after passing this law is why I will never ever vote for something like this in Oregon. And someone involved in an official level said publically that they now have to figure out how to keep the stuff out of the hands of teens. I would have thought that State leo´s would have insisted on legality for MJ be age related like drinking is.

So as I understand it, if you smoke regular cigarettes, it must be outside; but if it´s pot it must be inside?

OK, you lovers of hemp, be warned. Your "Lord and Savior Obama" is going to open up his can of "regulation whoop a##" on marijuana (from production through retail) to the point where you won´t be able to recognize it. You´ll then pray for the return of the good old days when the stuff was illegal. At which point I´ll say, "welcome to the Republican Party".

The great virtue of our federal system is that states can conduct their own experiments. Experiments can succeed in their goal, or fail. Observers with a trace of sense will learn from the candidly reported results.
It may not be wise to enable populations with two substances that legally relieve the user of reality: ethanol and tetrahydrocannabinol.

Can´t wait to see all the regulations...i think it will go something like this:

1. Pot is legal
2. Pot must now be regulated
3. Pot must now be mass-produced and marketed to the masses
4. Marketing works! Lots of people buy and smoke pot.
5. We *discover* that pot is actually bad for you and causes things like cancer, early-on set dementia, weight-gain and extremely bad driving habits
6. Gov´t begins to raise taxes on pot to try to get consumers not to buy it
6. Gov´t sues BIG POT, BIG WEED
7. Some in gov´t start to call for the illegalization of pot

So, how long do you think all of this will take?

All I can say is that Mexican cartels are not going to give up their iron-grip deadly monopolies on pot to friendly neighborhood hippies who want to go into the pot business for themselves. They don´t tolerate competition - and they behead their gang rivals. Imagine what they will do to unarmed hippies. There´ll be a lot more like this before the year´s up.

Reply 15 - Posted by: geekrunner, 12/7/2012 7:12:49 PM     (No. 9054385)

My question is, if it´s legal to smoke pot in Washington state, why does the report call it an "alleged" growing center? Will it need to be proven in a court of law by a jury of his peers that the "alleged" growing center is in fact a "convicted" growing center? In that vein, they should have included that the "alleged" homeowner shot the "alleged" robbers in front of his "alleged" 9 YO son.

Stupid reporter. Otherwise, good on the homeowner for defending his home and son.

Couldn´t tell from the article if the attempted robbery was due to the grow operation or not. Also, some here are throwing out a red-herring: the robbery would have happened regardless if pot was still illegal or not. So, don´t blame the legalization for the deaths; that was just pure Darwin award material.

Totally misleading and inaccurate headline.
It should read "2 killed in home invasion" No mention that anything happened because of legalized pot. The guy had a few plants in his attic and they call it a "growing center"? Get real people...this is nothing more than an attempt by the media to blame criminal burglary on pot being legalized.

So who do you sue when drivers start having accidents because they are high, and what about other motorized vehicles like air planes, trains, lawnmowers. Imagine all the silly goofs on the streets. And forget about the stench of pot.

I wonder if the ´no smoking´ rules in restaurants and hospitals apply to the potheads.

In Silicon Valley, the employee perks are the stuff of legend. Parents-to-be at Facebook are given a bonus to help with expenses and extensive maternity and paternity leave. Software company Evernote will pay to have their employees apartments cleaned twice every month. And Google — perhaps the most generous when it comes to fringe benefits — lavishes its employees with free concierge service and a cafeteria chock full of gourmet food. While these benefits are partially a product of the intense competition for qualified tech workers, they may also be a way for companies to simply increase compensation

The state health exchanges that are central to the U.S. Affordable Care Act are costing the federal government more than twice its initial budget to complete. The Obama administration expects to have spent $4.4 billion in fiscal 2012 and 2013 on grants to states that are building new marketplaces to sell subsidized health insurance, according to budget proposals released today for 2014. A year ago, the administration had anticipated spending about $2 billion. Including grants the administration expects to make in 2014, costs for the state-run exchanges will reach about $5.7 billion. SAN FRANCISCO — California lawmakers are considering taking some tax exemptions away from youth groups that do not accept gay, transgender or atheist members — a move intended to pressure the Boy Scouts of America to lift its ban on gay Scouts and troop leaders. Some cities have withdrawn free rent and other subsidies from the Boy Scouts over the years, but legislation introduced by state Sen. Ricardo Lara would make California the first state to target the Scouts for its anti-gay policy. The Long Beach Democrat´s bill, SB 323, is scheduled for its first committee hearing on Wednesday.

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.

The state of California is reportedly considering legislation that would force group insurance policies to provide infertility treatment for gay and lesbian couples. Two men who have sex with each other for a year and do not produce a baby would be considered “infertile” under the proposed legislation. So would two women having sex. Since biology does not allow those without a uterus to conceive or those without a penis to impregnate, every year-long gay couple in California would potentially be covered by this new provision of California law.
