| The US Secretary of State landed in Belfast as part of four-day European trip, just hours after police seized an unexploded bomb from suspected Republican dissidents. #1, Northern Irish Republicans have been so named for decades, probably since before the twenties. IRA means "Irish Republican Army." Whether a majority of the residents of the country of Northern Ireland (as opposed to Eire or Southern Ireland) want to become part of Eire (which referendum after referendum shows they don´t), the IRA, Provos (Provisional IRA), Real IRA, and so on, will continue to bomb and kill and the Loyalists will continue their protests when the government of NI does something stupid that´s guaranteed to inflame, like ban the British flag from flying.

So what will be remembered as the biggest political event of spring 2013? Naturally the death of Lady Thatcher must be the prime candidate. But there is another that has thus far consumed only a tiny proportion of the column inches that have rightly been expended on the passing of the Iron Lady yet may have more pro found and longerlasting consequences. I speak of the rise and rise of Ukip. The Eastleigh by-election, in which Ukip sensationally beat the Conservatives to second place, has of course registered in the national political consciousness.

For what it´s worth I think the BBC has no business censoring the music charts--even if it involves a song as insensitively timed and crassly-chosen as Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead! a) we should do everything we can to discourage this idea the BBC has of itself as a branch of the Nanny State. Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends.
