KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The estate or guardian of the infant of the Chiefs player who killed her mother before turning a gun on himself will receive more than $1 million under terms of the NFL´s collective-bargaining agreement. Jovan Belcher´s 3-month-old daughter, Zoey, stands to receive $108,000 annually over the next four years, $48,000 in the fifth year and then $52,000 each year until age 18. She´ll continue to receive that amount until age 23 if she attends college.

I agree - this is none of our business. This concerns their own private financial arrangements, and the whole planet should not have access to information regarding the poor girl´s inheritance. She has no ability to deny the press access to this data, so whoever is functioning as the current guardian and/or trustee is IMHO doing a poor job guarding the child’s privacy. Harm will likely come from this, as well as numerous future lawsuits. As if this kid needed more trouble…

This infant is three months old. Some surely don´t sound as though human life matters much to them - including the quality life of a baby born alive but orphaned when she has been in the world such a short time.

These benefits were part of the NFL´s contract with her father. Why are we being so callous about it?

Sometimes I am ashamed of what I see posted here.

I agree that this is a private matter. And I also hope a family court judge will make sure an appropriate trustee is appointed to handle the funds. (That is not a whole lot of money, by the way. And I don´t know what the tax implications will be, but they should enter probate as soon as possible so that the 3 month old will not have to pay because of being rich, under president zero´s definition.)
And it should not be called a ´windfall.´

Apparently his mother and the baby´s mother were close, which would explain his mother´s being there to help with the new baby. An article elsewhere says that permanent guardianship will be up to the court. As will adoption if someone should petition to adopt Zoey.

This is a private matter. Mercifully Zoey is too young to know what happened. I wish her a healthy, happy life among persons who love her and will care well for her.

Now it´s time for us to move on, right?

AMMAN- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry broke from a visit to Italy on Wednesday to try to salvage Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, even as Arab leaders declared they would never meet Israel´s core demand to be recognized as a Jewish state. Kerry flew to Jordan to ask Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to commit to extending the negotiations, just days before Israel is supposed to release a final group of Palestinian prisoners as a confidence-building gesture. Before it releases the prisoners, Israel wants to be assured Abbas won´t abandon the U.S.-brokered talks, which resumed last July after a three-year break. Having initially

As further proof the NFL never is far from the headlines, owners could make plenty of news this week at their spring meetings. They will consider 13 playing rules proposals and seven bylaws. They will discuss expanding the playoff field from 12 to 14 teams, although a vote on such a move is uncertain. Some changes would seem to be slam dunks: extending the height of the goal posts 5 feet to help determine if kicks are good; eliminating overtime in preseason games; placing fixed TV cameras on the goal lines, end lines and sidelines to help with replay reviews.

Prices are rising for a range of food staples, from meat and pork to fruits and vegetables, squeezing consumers still struggling with modest wage gains. Food prices rose 0.4% in February, the most since September 2011, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Tuesday. Beef and veal shoppers were socked with some of the biggest increases, as prices jumped 4% from January. Overall inflation remained tame, as falling gasoline and other energy costs offset the food price increases. The consumer price index ticked up just 0.1% from January and 1.1% in the past year.

That would seem to be the premise behind a Portland bar’s ban on two kinds of cognac – Hennessy and Rémy Martin – as the owners try to convince city officials that they are making the place safer. In a letter to the police department, a lawyer for Sangillo’s Tavern said “the purchase of these liquors was related to detrimental conduct.” Hennessy cognac is heavily marketed to young black drinkers, raising questions about whether the ban has racial overtones.
