Shale gas might just rescue
our economy – but not if
the EU gets its way

Telegraph [UK], by Daniel Hannan

One of the reasons that the language in which you´re reading these words is the most widespread on Earth is that Great Britain happened to be rich in coal deposits. There were plenty of other places that might have industrialised first, from the Netherlands to China. The good fortune of our eighteenth century ancestors was that, just when they needed it, they stumbled upon a cheap source of energy. Coal powered the new mills, releasing millions of employees to do different work and creating a massive consumer class. Britain became the greatest nation in the world. Now, just when we

Vladimir Putin yesterday mocked the West´s sanctions against Russia - as eastern Europe began boosting its defences amid fears of further Kremlin land grabs. Putin dismissively brushed aside concerns raised by Washington, Brussels and London and inked Crimea´s switch to rule by Moscow in defiance of international objections. He also laughed off punishments imposed by the U.S. and EU on his closest friends and their banks. Putin opened an account in blacklisted St Petersburg-based Rossiya Bank, which was singled out for sanctions by America, and ordered that his monthly £4,500 salary be paid into the bank. ´I have ordered the administrative department to transfer

The campaign for greater press regulation in Britain has suffered a devastating, possibly fatal blow with the release to the Guardian of a list of the celebrities who are lending their support to the Leveson Royal Charter proposal. "Wankers. Faarsands of them!" commented one former fan of press regulation on seeing the list: "I used to think the British press had got too intrusive and badly needed reining in. But now that I´ve been made aware of the kind of ocean-going knobs who are in favour of the Leveson Royal Charter, I´ve adjusted my position. In fact I´d like to

Michelle Obama and her daughters charmed China today as they greeted President Xi Jinping on the first day of their week-long trip to the country. The First Lady, who was also accompanied by her mother Marian Robinson, met the President and his wife Peng Liyuan at the Diaoyutai state guesthouse in Beijing. The visit marks the first meeting between Mrs Obama and Ms Peng, whose husbands run the world´s first and second largest economies respectively. And it has been deemed a great success - with Chinese media celebrating a budding relationship between the pair. Today, China News Service has described the First Lady

As aircraft and ships continued to search for debris which might be that of the missing flight MH370 on Friday a Malaysian woman on a flight across the Indian Ocean claimed to have seen an aircraft in the water near the Andaman Islands on the day the jet disappeared. The Kuala Lumpur wife was so convinced about what she saw at 2.30pm on March 8, several hours after MH370 vanished, that she filed an official report with police that very day--a full five days before the search for the plane was expanded to the area around the Andaman Islands.

A senior judge has urged the Church of England to stop being a push-over: that way lies oblivion, said Baroness Hale. If Christians make no demands of our society, they will receive nothing from it. I would apply her wise warning to all Christians: make like the Muslims, I´d tell them, and shout "bigot!" and "human rights abuse!" at every critic. Christians should shake their fist, and stomp their foot. That way lies respect, and not a little awe. Instead of turning the other cheek or bleating about "discrimination", Baroness Hale said, Christians should use the nuclear weapon: human rights

A man in Las Vegas who signed up for a state-approved health insurance plan in November has now been told that he didn’t have coverage for the first two months of this year even though he was paying premiums for that time. Larry Basich’s ordeal that has landed him with $407,000 in hospital bills is the latest example of the problems facing Nevada residents due to the state’s problem-riddled exchange system. On Tuesday, a state panel approved a $1.5million consulting contract in an effort to have a private firm fix the state’s exchange.

In a normal world the US Federal Reserve would barely cause a ripple by tweaking its interest rate forecast a year or two ahead. But we are not in normal world. We are facing a confluence of events somewhat like 1998 when Fed tightening turned the East Asian crisis into a global credit event. We all forget now that Alan Greenspan told emerging markets to drop dead at his Humphrey Hawkins testimony that year--saying he was more concerned about US inflation--and drop dead is exactly what they then did. With New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie stalled by the “Bridgegate” affair, former Florida Gov. (Video) The Obama ladies are in the house — the house of China, that is. First lady Michelle Obama, her two daughters, Malia and Sasha, and her mother touched down Thursday in China for what’s being touted as a weeklong feel-good tourist event, amid increasing murmurs back home about U.S. taxpayers having to foot the bill. Mrs. Obama is supposed to use her visit for soft diplomacy only, and shy from the more controversial topics that plague U.S.-China relations, namely human rights and economics. No reporters accompanied the family on the trip. “The nature of her visit is really quite

“Obamacare” as shorthand for the Affordcable Care Act was first used mostly by critics of the law, but now everyone’s using the moniker and President Obama has long since embraced it. Is Barack Obama simply too busy to be Chief Executive of the United States? Apparently. One of the primary functions of the president is to keep the nation safe, to preserve it from its enemies. To do that effectively, one would actually have to maintain something of a consistent level of attention to the moving pieces that directly influence how future events will unfold. None other than the truly sycophantic thinks for a second that President Obama cares a whit for anything that does not involve fundamentally altering the social composition of this country. Or golf. President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he thinks Massachusetts Gov. The two men have campaigned for each other, with Patrick acting as a surrogate for Obama nationally during the 2012 presidential race. Patrick has said clearly that he intends to return to the private sector when his second term as governor is up at the end of the year and will not run for president in 2016. Black students are more likely to be suspended from U.S. public schools — even as tiny preschoolers. The racial disparities in American education, from access to high-level classes and experienced teachers to discipline, were highlighted in a report released Friday by the Education Department´s civil rights arm. The suspensions — and disparities — begin at the earliest grades. Black children represent about 18 percent of children in preschool programs in schools, but they make up almost half of the preschoolers who are suspended more than once, the report said. Six percent of the nation´s districts with preschools reported suspending at

It’s the Koch brothers.” The article was based on a newly-issued two-page report by the far-left International Forum on Globalization.
