While he now demands that higher tax rates for the wealthy must be part of a “fiscal cliff” deal, President Obama took a very different line just over a year ago in the last major clash with Congress over a long-term budget deal. In comments Republicans on Capitol Hill are highlighting, Mr. Obama argued in the summer of 2011 that the government could raise more than $1 trillion in revenue without increasing tax rates paid by the rich — something the president now contends is mathematically impossible. “What we said was, give us $1.2 trillion in additional revenues Byline corrected.
So, the pols intentionally, knowingly, set up a huge disaster roaring down the road at us. One that would wreck just about everything. Gut the military. Lead to yet another debt downgrade. A huge disaster so hugely bad that, hey, there´s just absolutely n-o-o-o-o possible way ever, no Stanley-Cup-Finals-in-Hell-way, that they´d ever, ever, ever, ever, ever let it get to that.
And which is now a couple weeks of more pointless posturing away.
Wanna help me pluck some chickens? We need feathers. Lots of feathers. Lots. And lots, and lots, and lots, and....
“Let’s broaden the base, let’s reduce the rate,” Jarrett said at a Bloomberg breakfast at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. “That means we are going to close some loopholes, but that’s going to benefit the broader business community.”
From September 4th of this year. Let´s reduce the rates. Valerie Jarrett said it 90 days ago. I can´t take another 4 years of this.
They will do very well if all that opposes them are the current crop of stupid, unprincipled, cowardly Republicans. What do Republicans stand for? The answer is "absolutely nothing." They give us mushy, stand-for-nothing presidential candidates and then wonder why they lose. Republicans still have the House; use it or lose it too.
If Obama said something was possible then but impossible now, it´s not because he is stupid or because he is lying, it´s because he is omniscient. We know this because his court eunuch´s say so, and they too are omniscient.
I´m 68 years old and am finally reaching the point of promising myself to never go to the voting booth again as long as there are only the dhims and dhim-lites to vote for. Both parties make me sick. And especially John ´Tammy Faye´ Boehner and Eric Cantor. Mr. McConnell not far behind. Our leadership sux.
He clearly, consistently and constantly contradicts himself. Earnestly. And the idiots in the LSM and the idiots who voted for him blithely sit there, worshipping him. He is either incompetent or he is a total and complete liar. To them it doth not matter.
The taxes are going up becaause like a bad team in the clutch you know the repubs. will cave. I´m tired of watching my team lose. We need some new coaches. And we need a pr firm that can go up against the propaganda press that the repub. leaders are so afraid of.
Has anyone noticed the lack of coverage of Greece, Spain, etc and how they´re dealing with their fiscal cliff/fiancial crisis? I hear reports of businessmen rummaging through garbage for food, etc, but no pictures.
So I guess to the "average American", aka the idiots who voted for Obama, Europe is doing just swell and all this talk of doom and gloom is nothing. So why worry?
The higher rates Obama demands will be at best a drop in the bucket compared to his spending. He only wants this because he knows that it will be political suicide for the republicans who go along. He is pushing the GOP to betray it´s own base and they are signalling that they will comply! Just imagine if republicans demanded Obama cut support for all dependents on government 10% and betray his base. Would Obama agree to cut his own political throat? You all know the answer to that!
Face it... as long as you keep raising the debt ceiling, Obama doesn´t need a budget from Congress to keep spending money. If they go over the so called fiscal cliff, they own the problem, not Republicans.
I wish I was privy to the discussions that Boehner and McConnell and the rest of the leadership are having like everyone else here apparently is. Limbaugh and Levin must have special listening devices and mind reading skills because they cannot stop trashing Republicans for making deals that haven´t been made . The radio big mouths should stop running their mouths and run for office . Or form a third party that makes them happy instead of complaining about Republicans 24 /7 like they have been doing for decades. McConnell´s move yesterday should have gotten great applause from the complainers , but, it won´t . Sometimes I think Obama is a total moron who has no idea what is going on and is content to frolic with his boyfriends and play golf, while others play the role of Commander in Chief and POTUS. Other times I believe the guy is a devious , hate filled , anti American maniac who is doing everything possible to destroy the military , our economy and our way of life. Most likely both scenarios are true.
#6 is right. Any remnants of the Bush tax rates will expire in just over a year. Closing of loopholes, eliminating deductions, etc will last forever. Far better to go over the cliff and force everyone to pay higher taxes. Obama´s base is going to complain the loudest when the extensions on tax credits, the Payroll Tax Holiday, and the progressive nature of the Bush tax rates disappear. Think of Council women in Detroit. Think of all the ´boyfriends´ who complained when the tax credit checks got delayed during the last debt limit deal fell through.
I am frothing at my mouth: why the conservatives don´t build our own mainstream media??? Everybody on the left understands the power of propaganda - commies and fascists alike had tons of theoretical books written on that issue. Marx, lenin, hitler, chavez, castro know that, but our repubics DON´T! We will never be able to win anything just because the lefties run things absolutely without conservatives countering them. They dis anything offered by repubics, lie about it, and American public gobbles it up like all the sheeple do! Also, conservative mainstream media could expose the rinos for what damage they do to the country being only concerned about clinging to whatever power is left to them by the leftist commies. Un-f-believable!
Yes, # 20! This is what´s needed! I posted about it yesterday. Set up their own cable station to explain conservative principles, buy a lot of prime time, really promote a conservative magazine, and online, buy a newpaper, buy huge shares of a mainstream media news outfit, so many of these things they could do. Because they need to do a lot of explaining and teaching, and they are blocked in the regular media.
Also, #18, think about this: do you think that the lefties are concerned about ideology? Look at the leftist totalitarian countries - where there is ideology, in n.korea, venezuela, cuba, vietnam, russia, ukraine? They don´t care about masses, never were, the only thing they care about is power. What they do with it is different matter. In our country they want to destroy the opposition, any free thinking people (in our case independent middle class). And they use all the propaganda they can - because they have mainstream media! (look at my previous post #20).
#20 -- Doing nothing to resist the Left´s strangle-hold on the mainstream media offers little hope for improving the credibility of their reporting. But fighting propaganda with counter-propaganda will bring about truth about as effectively as fighting chaos with more chaos will restore order.
For almost 20 years, talk radio HAS BEEN the right´s own ´mainstream media´. Has that brought about any reform or balance to the Leftstream Media?
#24, AM radio is a lot smaller than we think. It is a choir, just like this site. That´s no fault of either, it´s just the fact that liberals are either lazy or they camp out at their sites like PBS, etc. It sure would have been nice to have a counter CNN around the same time ONE man, Ted Turner, started his ´most trusted news´ network, but we didn´t. Now we can´t even mount a show to combat the daily insanity of ´The Daily Show.´
I hope The Blaze can grow, I hope the kid with the camcorder does more muckraking and it would be nice if a few in Hollywood followed Leno´s change of heart and explained Obama´s moves to their audiences, but that still leaves the entire education system and just about every polling place.
It makes no diff what Obie does from this day forward. The msm covers for him and Americans are too ignorant to question what they hear (or dont hear) from the msm, and the public schools go on indoctrinating the young people to become new dims. PO´d yet enough, folks, to do something about it?
Organizers of a rally planned for Washington, D.C. on Saturday in support of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi deny being part of the Muslim Brotherhood, or being Brotherhood supporters. The rally, they said during a news conference Friday, is about justice in Egypt. A long record, in many cases tested in court, says otherwise. The recently-formed Egyptian Americans for Democracy and Human Rights (EADHR) news conference featured Abdul Mawgoud Dardery, a spokesman for the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood´s Freedom and Justice Party.
What does is say about a religion when, if two innocent teenage girls walking down the street are doused with acid by men on motorbikes, everyone assumes the attackers must be Muslims? We let a great many outrages go unremarked, but this one really should be noted. The victims are two British girls, Kirstie Trup and Katie Gee, both 18, who were spending their “gap year” between high school and university volunteering at an orphanage in Zanzibar. Zanzibar is a mostly Muslim place, so they had been warned about the need to fit in:
Stavanger, Norway — The National Review cruise pulled in on Tuesday to this coastal city, which clearly is the center of the country’s fabulously successful oil industry. Outside of Texas, it’s unlikely you would find a Petroleum Museum in the United States like the one that occupies a prominent place on Stavanger’s waterfront. We depend on the oil industry for our daily needs, but then either disparage it or ignore it. Not so Norway. The museum in Stavanger, which opened in 1997, makes obligatory nods toward climate change and alternative fuels. But among the pictures
SANAA, Yemen — The U.S. has sharply escalated its drone war in Yemen, with military officials in the Arab country reporting 34 suspected al-Qaida militants killed in less than two weeks, including three strikes on Thursday alone in which a dozen died. The action against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, as the Yemen branch is known, comes amid a global terror alert issued by Washington. One Mideast official says the uptick is due to its leaders leaving themselves more vulnerable by moving from their normal hideouts toward areas where they could carry out attacks. The U.S. and Britain evacuated
Security inside Iraq is unraveling at an alarming pace, and al Qaeda terrorists there aren’t just pulling the thread; they’re setting it on fire. More than 1,000 Iraqis were killed in bombings and shootings last month, making July the deadliest month since violence between Sunni and Shiite Muslims peaked from 2006 to 2008, the United Nations says. On Thursday, gunmen stormed a policeman’s home in Tikrit and killed him, his wife and their three children. When neighbors later approached the house, a nearby car bomb exploded and killed eight people — a noted al Qaeda tactic,
Starbucks seems an unlikely dueling ground in the national debate over guns, but the ubiquitous coffee chain Friday will once again find itself squarely in the cross hairs in the battle between gun control and gun rights advocates. More than 2,000 gun rights activists plan to visit their local Starbucks with their sidearms for a national “Starbucks Appreciation Day.” The Seattle-based chain takes no formal position on guns but has a corporate policy of following applicable state gun laws — including “open carry”
It’s time to take off the kid gloves and start going toe-to-toe with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, during an appearance on Fox News. After all, Mr. Putin doesn’t mind causing America angst, Mr. Bolton said. Witness the recent granting of asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden. “I think in order to focus Putin’s thinking, we need to do things that cause him pain as well,” Mr. Bolton said, to Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren. “And while I know that not having a chance to have a bilateral meeting with his buddy Barack Obama
New York ethics regulators have opened a new investigation into the State Assembly after learning that Assembly Democrats withheld documents that were subpoenaed as part of a recent sexual harassment inquiry, according to people with knowledge of the investigation. The new inquiry began after The New York Times revealed last month that a top Assembly lawyer had kept quiet allegations of sexual harassment made against Assemblyman Micah Z. Kellner, a Manhattan Democrat and current City Council candidate, in 2009. The lawyer, Bill Collins, was dismissed amid the revelations. The records related to the Kellner allegations were not turned over
NEW YORK — Cosmo Allegretti, who created and voiced puppet characters like Grandfather Clock and Dancing Bear on the children´s television show "Captain Kangaroo," has died. He was 86. Allegretti, who had homes in Hampton Bays, N.Y., and New River, Ariz., died of emphysema on July 26 in Arizona, his attorney and friend John Munzel said Wednesday. Allegretti had been a puppeteer but was working as a set painter in the early days of "Captain Kangaroo." He volunteered to make a replacement when the show was dissatisfied with a puppet created by a professional. He gave life
When it comes to late-night comedy shows, President Obama is a prolific guest, but taxpayers might not be laughing along with him. Mr. Obama’s televised chat Tuesday on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno in Los Angeles was his 10th appearance on a TV talk show while in office, outpacing all presidents and hosts since the days of John F. Kennedy and Jack Paar in the early 1960s. The goal of these appearances is partly to boost the president’s image and partly to promote his agenda, and taxpayers foot the bill for Mr. Obama’s high-cost travel on Air Force One.
The recent security threat emanating from Yemen has complicated President Obama’s latest push to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, reviving doubts among conservative lawmakers about whether it is safe to return Yemeni detainees to their turbulent home country. More than half of the 166 prisoners being held in Guantanamo are from Yemen, and the transfer of many of them is essential to Obama’s long-promised goal of closing the detention center. But the recent threat involving al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, as the terrorist group’s Yemen-based branch is known, underlines the national security and political obstacles ahead.
The US state department has told citizens and non-emergency government staff to leave Yemen "immediately" due to security threats. It comes after the sudden closure of 20 US embassies and consulates on Sunday. This was prompted by intercepted conversations between two senior al-Qaeda figures, including top leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, US media said. Meanwhile the UK Foreign office says it has withdrawn embassy staff from Yemen and advises against all travel there. The US earlier said the closures in North Africa and the Middle East were "out of an abundance of caution".
The owner of a shop in Zurich where US talk show host Oprah Winfrey says she encountered racism has called the incident a "misunderstanding". Winfrey, one of the world´s richest women, claimed an assistant refused to serve her in an upmarket handbag shop. She was apparently told one of the bags on display was "too expensive" for her. Shop owner Trudie Gotz told the BBC that Winfrey was "absolutely allowed" to look at the $35,000 (£22,500) bag, which was kept behind a screen. "My salesperson wanted to give her the handbag in her hand. But she didn´t want
Nobody tells Oprah she can´t afford a handbag. Oprah Winfrey is one of the richest entertainers in the world, thanks to her willdly successful 25-season run on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and her latest media foray with the newly revitalized Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). The entertainer earned an estimated $77 million from June 2012 to June 2013 alone, according to Forbes, but she says she still experiences racism because she is African American. Take this latest incident in Switzerland, where "The Butler" star went to attend the nuptials of good friend and singer Tina Turner last month.
At a White House press conference Friday afternoon, President Obama said that health insurance plans offered under Obamacare will be "significantly cheaper" than plans currently on the market, but a string of recent reports say that isn´t true. "What happens on October 1, in 53 days, is for the remaining 15 percent of the population that doesn´t have health insurance, they´re going to be able to go on a website or call up a call center and sign up for affordable, quality health insurance at a significantly cheaper rate than what they can get right now on
The Washington Post is a legend in the minds of the Washington elite, so its financial decline has caused quiet panic. As NPR media reporter David Folkenflik put it, “You think of stories like the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, these are all stories where The Washington Post led the nation’s understanding, the world’s understanding of some major issues.” Outside the liberal media, you wonder how long Post fans can wallow in their Nixon-crumbling polyester “glory days” in the early 1970s. But nostalgia ruled as the Graham family sold the Post to Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com.
While media mogul Oprah Winfrey has been promoting her new film, “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” she revealed she was a recent victim of profiling while shopping in a store in Zurich.(Snip)“I was in Zurich the other day at a store, whose name I will not mention,” Winfrey said on “Entertainment Tonight,” “and I didn’t have my eyelashes on, but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear…but obviously, ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ is not shown in Zurich. So this doesn’t happen to me unless somebody obviously doesn’t know that it’s me.” Winfrey went on to explain that she was in Zurich for Tina Turner’s wedding,
Tonight, I went on Lawrence O´Donnell´s show, and Lawrence O´Donnell yelled at me. Or, rather, he O´Reilly´d at me. That O´Donnell interrupted and harangued and mansplained and was generally an angry grandpa at me is not what I take issue with, however. What bothers me is that, look: your producers take the time to find experts to come on the show, answer your questions, and, hopefully, clarify the issue at hand.
“IQ is a metric of such dubiousness that almost no serious educational researcher uses it anymore,” the Guardian’s Ana Marie Cox wrote back in May. It was a breathtakingly ignorant statement. Psychologist Jelte Wicherts noted in response that a search for “IQ test” in Google’s academic database yielded more than 10,000 hits — just for the year 2013. (Snip) There is a large discrepancy between what educated laypeople believe about cognitive science and what experts actually know. Journalists are steeped in the lay wisdom, so they are repeatedly surprised when someone forthrightly discusses the real science of mental ability.
The Clintons have decided to rent a different house in the Hamptons this summer after they only received a small portion of their security deposit back from the home they rented last year. The famous Democrats have been frequent visitors to the expensive summer getaway in Long Island, and rented the same beachfront house in 2011 and 2012. [Snip] When it comes to rentals in the Hamptons, many owners use the security deposits as a way to pay for the utility fees like heat and grounds-keeping charges. It should be little surprise then that the Lily Pond Lane home
Justice: The wife of a Fort Hood survivor claims the Defense Department is "slapping victims with gag orders" and telling family members not to talk to the press following testimony in the trial of Nidal Hasan. One of the great scandals of the Obama administration has been its shameful designation of the Nov. 5, 2009, rampage at the Army base in Killeen, Texas, by Maj. Nidal Hasan as "workplace violence." It has only compounded the pain and suffering of the victims and their families who have now apparently been ordered to shut up about it.
Forty to 50 House Republicans will support immigration reform, Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) predicted Thursday. Gutiérrez said many of the Republicans supportive of immigration reform don’t want to be identified, but he insisted they would support comprehensive immigration reform. “If they ask me today, go find those 40 to 50 Republicans, I’ll tell them I found them. I know where they’re at,” Gutiérrez said in an interview with Ed O’Keefe at The Washington Post.
President Barack Obama announced Friday afternoon that the White House will publicly release a summary of the legal authorities through which the National Security Agency conducts its controversial surveillance programs. ´Given the history of abuse by governments,´ he said, it is important to explain how such a program is managed, and - equally important - what it may not do. He described his working relationship with Vladimir Putin as ´candid´ and ´blunt,´ and seemed to dismiss concerns that the Russian president´s body language indicated a lack of willingness to work with the United States.
Middle and high school students in San Diego, California will be encouraged to vent their frustration that the world lacks justice when they return to school and participate in the “Trayvon Martin dialogues” this fall. The board of San Diego Unified Schools unanimously approved a proposal recently to establish classroom forums to discuss the death of Trayvon Martin, a black teenager who was shot during an altercation with a Hispanic man, George Zimmerman, in Florida last year. A jury recently acquitted Zimmerman, who claimed that Martin struck first and shot him in self-defense.
