One of my top-5 favorite jazz albums of all time is Time Out. Played it till the grooves wore out and then bought it again in every format possible. RIP dear Mr. Brubeck.

Time Out and Time Further Out were staples of my childhood. I´ll always love Dave Brubeck´s music - the man was a genius.

My favorite jazz composer/musician. A giant who studied under Milhaud the early 20th century composer, and brought jazz to the masses via the quartet´s college tours in the 50s and 60s, booked by Dave´s wife.

Got to see quartet(s) three times - college in early 60s, Worcester concert hall in the 90s and at Newport a few summers ago.

Grateful for 70 years of Brubeck!

I had the privilege of seeing the Quartet play in Carnegie Hall back in the early 60´s. They were wonderful. I have the album and every other album ever made by this outstanding musician. I took two of his early albums with me to college in 1958 and I followed his career closely for the next 64 years. His most recent solo piano CDs are among his best material, especially the CD "Private Brubeck Remembers" which contains some of the tunes he played during WW II in Europe. He was the recipient of many awards but the one that he never received was the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was one of the best ambassadors for American jazz music for over 75 years. I understand he was working on yet another solo piano CD when he died. Alas we will never hear it. He will be deeply missed by all his many fans and especially by me as I have struggled with the piano learning curve. Rest in Peace, Dave. You have been an inspiration to so many, especially old codgers like me. May God bless your soul and may God bless your loving family.

I´m so sad to hear of this lovely mans passing. Such beautiful melodies and interesting time signatures were quite an inspiration. His sons are talented musicians in their own rite.

I thought his birthday was today. I learned this 20 years ago when I was exactly half his age.

Saw him in a small, local theater a couple of years ago. His fellow musicians came out first and looked like the Apple Dumpling Gang, straight from the rest home. Then Brubeck shuffled out, looking 90 years old, which he was.
It was sad, except it turned into the BEST CONCERT I´VE EVER WITNESSED. Absolutely fabulous night of great music. These guys could barely walk, but they sure could play!!

Timely suggestion - check out the Brubeck "Christmas" CD (Telarc). His arrangements of classic Christmas carols aren´t particularly improvisational or "jazzy," but more the product of a master showing off his talent developed over a lifetime.

He may be gone - we´ll all be gone someday - but his magic will continue to cheer and inspire.

When Dave was in his prime I was a budding young AF pilot. We listened to him as often as we could. That was back in happier times when we still had a country. Then things got nasty in a small country in southeast Asia and things were never right again. Listening to his music does calm the soul.

"Take Five" probably came to mind first for many of us. Wonderful. It´ll be played for many, many years, and deserve it.

#4: Interesting, thanks. For those not familiar, find Darius Milhaud´s "La Creation du Monde." Interesting, sometimes challenging, definite jazz flavorings.

#12: re aging/aged musicians -- the skills can be astonishing, not to mention rewarding. Brubeck; Rubinstein; Horowitz and more.

#17: Note Mozart too: "Rondo alla turca." Very fine piece.

Thanks for all the links posted here. I have learned for the first time that Mr. Brubeck was at the Battle of the Bulge. He also wrote beautiful choral music and seemed to have become a strong Christian (Roman Catholic). What a dear man and what an interesting life he led. I will definitely search out more of his choral works.

A great American and jazz legend is gone. At Amazon you can preview his Christmas album "A Dave Brubeck Christmas", just him on the piano. It´s beautiful. I´m going to add it to my ever-growing collection of Christmas CDs.

The mid-´50s to the mid-´60s were the Golden Years of jazz for us. ...So many greats, with Brubeck among the very best.
