One of my top-5 favorite jazz albums of all time is Time Out. Played it till the grooves wore out and then bought it again in every format possible. RIP dear Mr. Brubeck.

My favorite jazz composer/musician. A giant who studied under Milhaud the early 20th century composer, and brought jazz to the masses via the quartet´s college tours in the 50s and 60s, booked by Dave´s wife.
Got to see quartet(s) three times - college in early 60s, Worcester concert hall in the 90s and at Newport a few summers ago.
Grateful for 70 years of Brubeck!

I had the privilege of seeing the Quartet play in Carnegie Hall back in the early 60´s. They were wonderful. I have the album and every other album ever made by this outstanding musician. I took two of his early albums with me to college in 1958 and I followed his career closely for the next 64 years. His most recent solo piano CDs are among his best material, especially the CD "Private Brubeck Remembers" which contains some of the tunes he played during WW II in Europe. He was the recipient of many awards but the one that he never received was the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was one of the best ambassadors for American jazz music for over 75 years. I understand he was working on yet another solo piano CD when he died. Alas we will never hear it. He will be deeply missed by all his many fans and especially by me as I have struggled with the piano learning curve. Rest in Peace, Dave. You have been an inspiration to so many, especially old codgers like me. May God bless your soul and may God bless your loving family.

I´m so sad to hear of this lovely mans passing. Such beautiful melodies and interesting time signatures were quite an inspiration. His sons are talented musicians in their own rite.
I thought his birthday was today. I learned this 20 years ago when I was exactly half his age.
Rest in peace, Mr. Brubeck.

Saw him in a small, local theater a couple of years ago. His fellow musicians came out first and looked like the Apple Dumpling Gang, straight from the rest home. Then Brubeck shuffled out, looking 90 years old, which he was. It was sad, except it turned into the BEST CONCERT I´VE EVER WITNESSED. Absolutely fabulous night of great music. These guys could barely walk, but they sure could play!! RIP, Brubeck.

Timely suggestion - check out the Brubeck "Christmas" CD (Telarc). His arrangements of classic Christmas carols aren´t particularly improvisational or "jazzy," but more the product of a master showing off his talent developed over a lifetime.
He may be gone - we´ll all be gone someday - but his magic will continue to cheer and inspire.

One of my favorites of his was ´´It´s a Raggedy Waltz.´´ Combined the waltz and the rag beautifully. One version live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3eimKbIdHU See who is in that clip? Patrick MacGoohan.
Another favorite is, ´´Blue Rondo a la Turk.´´ Name comes from the 9/8 Turkish rhythms as 2+2+2+3 and 3+3+3 which are played consecutively in this piece. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc34Uj8wlmE

When Dave was in his prime I was a budding young AF pilot. We listened to him as often as we could. That was back in happier times when we still had a country. Then things got nasty in a small country in southeast Asia and things were never right again. Listening to his music does calm the soul.

But we´re blessed thrice over -- his creativity; his performance talent; and electronics to record and reproduce the music.
"Take Five" probably came to mind first for many of us. Wonderful. It´ll be played for many, many years, and deserve it.
#4: Interesting, thanks. For those not familiar, find Darius Milhaud´s "La Creation du Monde." Interesting, sometimes challenging, definite jazz flavorings.
#12: re aging/aged musicians -- the skills can be astonishing, not to mention rewarding. Brubeck; Rubinstein; Horowitz and more.
#17: Note Mozart too: "Rondo alla turca." Very fine piece.

He also wrote beautiful choral music and seemed to have become a strong Christian (Roman Catholic). What a dear man and what an interesting life he led. No doubt there are parents who have frank, frequent, open and easy discussions with their teens about sex. I’ve never met any. I do know parents, however, who were stunned to find their 15-year-old’s birth control pills in her pocketbook. Or who came home early to discover junior and a girl they’d never met frantically buttoning up. Or who found out — when their children were grown — what really went on when Meghan said she was sleeping over at Ashley’s. Such sobering tales of teens snookering mom and dad caused mixed emotions in me — a solidly pro-choice

Last fall, Ginnette Powell traveled from her home in Boston´s Dorchester section to her old middle school in South Boston - a journey of just two miles, but one that covered a huge emotional distance. Finally, she was able to leave the painful past behind. Powell endured the explosive battle over desegregation in Boston in the 1970s. Tears come to her eyes when she talks about how it took her decades to return to the place where she never felt safe as an African-American seventh-grader."It was scary because of what you were going into, getting bricks thrown at your bus.

"I don´t understand it," the Arizona Republican said on Sunday of the threat coming from Sen. Rand Paul,Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Mike Lee and nine other Republicans. "The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand.” "What are we afraid of? ... A few years after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Lindalyn Adams was escorting visitors on a bus traveling down Elm Street near Dealey Plaza. “I was pointing out the John Neely Bryan cabin and the Old Red Courthouse, and suddenly I realized the whole bus was leaning towards the right as we were going close to the Texas School Book Depository, and the women [were] pointing and saying, “Is that? Is that? Is that?’” Adams recalled during an oral history interview. She knew, of course, what “that” meant. “That” was where Kennedy had been shot.

The night began like many at Boorda Hall, a five-story barracks at Naval Station Great Lakes, the Navy´s premier training base on the shore of Lake Michigan in Illinois. Somebody announced a party, and the hard drinking and beer pong began. A 21-year-old Marine lance corporal, so drunk on rum and Mountain Dew she was slurring her words, went to look for Kyle Antonacci, a Navy seaman she´d been dating off and on. Antonacci soon texted his friend Mike Pineda to help him deal with her. Both men had sex with her that night. But what distinguished May 8, 2009,

The Keystone XL Pipeline has emerged as a major issue in the Massachusetts special U.S. Senate election, with environmental groups committing nearly one-third of the $1.25 million in outside money already spent on campaigns. The biggest spender so far is the League of Conservation Voters, which has already spent more than $545,000 to help elect Democratic candidate and Rep. Ed Markey, who has a strong pro-environment platform. “Our field campaign is resonating with voters across Massachusetts,” said Navin Nayak, a political specialist for the group. “The people of Massachusetts want climate change champion Ed Markey representing them.”

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

The Obama White House is scrambling to blame Friday’s abysmal March jobs numbers on the sequester’s trimming of the rate of growth in federal budgets that have yet to fully commence. Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank
