Church Struck by Crime
Wall Street Journal, by Pervaiz Shallwani and Sharon Adarlo

Newark — For the second Christmas season in a row, a church in this city´s impoverished South Ward has been ravaged by the same culprit: copper thieves. The Clinton Avenue Presbyterian Church closed its popular soup kitchen and moved services from its 98-year-old Gothic sanctuary to its basement after the bandits struck in late October and early November. The modest church was stripped of nearly all of its copper in the incidents, similar to a burglary last year that led the church to cancel its Christmas and choir services. As church members consider how to proceed this holiday season,

The church was not "struck by crime". The church was robbed, vandalized, invaded by criminals. "Crime" is an action performed by "criminals". It is not some vaporous abstraction that descends upon people from outer space. Criminals do bad things to their fellow man.

US investigators think that Malaysian Airlines flight 370 remained airborne for four more hours after vanishing from its last recorded position - raising the startling prospect the plane could have been hijacked. Officials suspect that the plane flew for a total of five hours based on data automatically downloaded from the Boeing 777´s Rolls Royce engines and sent back to the ground as part of a routine monitoring program. US counter-terrorism teams are now pursuing the astonishing possibility that the plane and its 239 passengers were diverted to an undisclosed location ´with the intention of using it later for another

A report issued by investigators inside the Environmental Protection Agency found rampant abuse in employees´ use of the agency´s government credit cards, warning that officials were ignoring a long list of safeguards designed to avoid the waste of taxpayer dollars. The EPA´s Office of Inspector General found $79,254 in ´prohibited, improper or erroneous´ spending in a sample of $152,602 in transactions. And more than 93 per cent of the time the employees used the cards, they ´were not in compliance with EPA policies,´ the IG wrote. Olympia, Wash. — An attempt to fight racism at a community college may have backfired. A group of employees at South Puget Sound Community College sent out an invitation to all 300 staffers. The "Staff, Faculty and Administrators of Color" encouraged employees to reply to the invitation to find out the confidential date and time of what was being called a "happy hour" to "build support and community" for people of color. The invite made it clear white people were not invited. The email read: "If you want to create space for white folks to meet and work on racism, white supremacy,

Trenton — A new effort is underway in the state Legislature to allow unauthorized immigrants to legally drive in New Jersey, setting up what could be the next state debate over immigration policy. Under the measure, New Jersey would be required to issue photo “driving privilege” cards to residents who could not prove that they were in this country legally but were able to show they lived in the state. “It’s about public safety,” said state Sen. Joseph Vitale (D-Middlesex), a sponsor. “Some of the undocumented are driving anyway. This isn’t to excuse the fact that they’re undocumented. But they’re on

The Boston public school system, as it prepared to make condoms available to students at all its high schools last fall, received what seemed like the perfect donation from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health: 40,000 free condoms. But now the system is pulling the donated contraceptives from its schools after some parents raised questions about whether the messages and images on the wrappers are appropriate for teenagers, even as they voiced support for the condom-distribution policy. The wrappers featured such messages as “One lucky lady,” “hump one,” and “tasty one,” which was accompanied by picture of a shark preying

You have probably seen all of the ridiculous speculating about the GOP nomination in 2016. This is still speculating, but my sincere hope is you don’t think it’s ridiculous too. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is laying the foundation for his presidential bid in concrete and steel. First, forget about Jeb Bush unless you want to hand Hillary eight years in the White House. The latest Rasmussen poll shows her leading Jeb in a general election 47 percent to 33. His name is Bush and to the general public the specifics of how smart he is doesn’t matter one iota. This was the precisely the experience Connecticut resident, Navy veteran and former firefighter John Cinque had after commenting on his state’s 2013 violation of the Second Amendment. The law in question criminalizes the sale of magazines holding more than 10 rounds and also certain semi-automatic rifles, and mandates that all grandfathered weapons and magazines must be registered with the state.
