The healing power of pine
Fox News, by Sara Altshul

I love walking into people´s homes in December, when the smell of freshly cut Christmas trees hangs in the air and fills me with seasonal joy. When it comes time to buy my favorite Scotch pine, Douglas fir, or Norway spruce, I use my nose to guide me. I want the freshest, most fragrant tree I can get my hands on: I need that aroma to jump-start my holiday spirit. If my apartment were big enough, I might even consider getting two trees this year! Only recently did I discover that it´s not just sentiment

Sara, your point is well taken...Obie and Moochie had to have 54 trees to get them well!

If I can avoid the muscle strain, high blood pressure and, yes, the occasional losing-my-religion utterances, while putting the tree into the stand so that it is straight and stable, I enjoy the smell of a Christmas tree in my house.

I love the fragrance too, but I´m allergic to fresh pine. My eyes get all red-rimmed and swollen. I invested in two high-quality, prelit trees for my home.

For so many years the trees were thrown out the door on the day after because they made the kids sick. I never understood it because we never had a problem on the East Coast with the Charlie Brown balsams. Turn out no matter what kind of tree we got out West the kids got sick- Douglas, Grand, Spruce even Noble. Now we know it was Alder pollen on the trees branches. Oh well, Yankee Candle Mack´s Balsam&Cedar scents and when out West our tree is fake. The scent is important so thanks for the pinesol tip ;) . Merry Christmas.

The Essential oils of Pine, etc. will not create an allergic reaction. Has to be other pollens on the trees.

We always went out into the woods and chose a cedar tree for Christmas when I was a girl. It had to be tall enough to touch the ceiling, but leave enough room for the Christmas star on top. Cedar smells like Christmas to me, along with oranges, apples, peppermint sticks, and mixed nuts. Daddy would bore a hole in a coconut. We all would sample the coconut "milk", and then he would crack it open and cut out yummy pieces of coconut for everyone. Mother would make a bowl full of pomanders from oranges and cloves.
The house smelled wonderful - just like Christmas.

Pomander balls, #9! Brings back wonderful memories. Made a few of them a few years ago (used oranges & cloves); think I´ll make some again this year. Here´s a link, for those who might want to try:

I could write another post about how lawless Obama’s constant re-writing of law without regard for the text of said law is. It is lawless, and it does threaten the foundations of the republic — Charles Krauthammer and Jonathan Turley, one conservative, the other liberal, agree on that. It sets a horrible precedent for future presidents to rule by fiat. It is a violation of the spirit and purpose of the Constitution. Barack Obama is getting away with it because, as I’ve written before, he has hacked the Constitution. I’m not alone in understanding that Obama has hacked the Constitution

As Mary J. Blige got everyone on their feet with the song "One," the French president and the Obamas hit the dance floor together, ending days of speculation among etiquette experts over how the White House would treat the stag Hollande. President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle may not be much for stuffy state dinners — they´ve hosted only six — but when they throw one, they know how to turn it into a party. With Bill and Hillary Clinton, the ultimate symbol of prestige bestowed upon close Hollywood supporters was a sleep-over in the Lincoln bedroom. Now, it´s

More heartbreaking weather began bearing down on the Northeast on the eve of Valentine´s Day - dumping more than a foot of snow on cities, grounding thousands of flights and shutting down Washington, D.C. Already the snowstorm - which pummeled southern states on Wednesday - has canceled more than 5,000 flights nationwide, left more than half a million people without power in the Deep South and killed at least 12. For the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, the heavy weather was the latest in an unending drumbeat of storms that have depleted cities´ salt supplies and caused school systems to run out

According to Reporters Without Borders, America dropped 13 spots on the World Press Freedom Index 2014, designed to rank 180 countries in terms of the freedoms journalists enjoy and the regulations placed on them by government authorities. The Index, published Feb. 11, shows that America now ranks number 46, below countries like South Africa and France. The Index has been published annually since 2002, but the 2014 ranking for America marks one of the most significant declines ever reported. According to Christophe Deloire, the Reporters Without Borders Secretary General, the World Freedom Index is based on seven criteria: the level

The following is not for the faint of heart. Even those with iron constitutions may not be able to stomach these pictures. John McCain has been decrying the carnage in Syria for a long time, lambasting the administration for not doing more to assist the rebels battling the Assad regime. Wednesday, he tried a new tack. McCain used his Twitter account to post close-up pictures of rows of dead children, an infant with its legs badly injured, and naked emaciated corpses laid out on concrete slabs. The photos are a handful of 55,000 smuggled out of Syria documenting Assad’s torture.

Obama´s Two Americas: The Economy

President Obama is dividing America into two nations—one rich, the other increasingly poor, and both more likely to elect Democrats. Americans growing richer support his policies, and those growing poorer are increasingly dependent on Democratic politicians for government handouts. In this century, the economy has not performed well, and a jobs shortage has driven down the income of most Americans. Obama’s “recovery” has managed only 2.4 percent growth, but George W. Bush’s expansion scored about the same rate and then collapsed altogether. Since 2001, when Bush took office, the U.S. economy has created only 4.7 million jobs—about 30,000 a month

The Boy Scouts of America said Wednesday that it lost 6 percent of its membership after an often-bruising year in which it announced it would accept openly gay boys for the first time, over the objections of some participants who eventually left the organization. The organization´s national leadership voted in May to accept openly gay boys for the first time, while continuing to exclude gay leaders. That policy change, while lauded by gay-rights groups, angered conservatives and some members who consider homosexuality a sin and a violation of Scouting values. BSA spokesman Deron Smith said Wednesday that the 2013 decline could

Comcast has agreed to buy Time Warner Cable for more than $45 billion in stock, a deal that would combine the two largest cable providers in the country, according to people familiar with the matter. The combined company would be a communications juggernaut with far greater influence than any of its peers. It would not only control the “last mile” connections that pump cable and internet services into homes and businesses, but also a huge swath of the content that travel through those pipes since Comcast already owns the entertainment empire of NBC Universal. Some Americans think that America is so good that it´s their moral obligation to let everyone in to share in the joyous holiday of being American. They assume that anyone who becomes American is lucky. Wow, what a big break for a foreigner. Well, maybe it´s no longer so great here. After all, Obama ran on "change." And the country has changed during his administration. It went downhill. Maybe we don´t have to feel guilty for not letting foreigners become Americans. Perhaps they could do better elsewhere. Perhaps Obama´s new America, with its change for change´s sake, is not good

It´s no surprise that Barack Obama´s authoritarian streak is revealing itself at last. It was always there; clearly apparent in his rhetoric (e.g., his envy of Chinese president Xi Jin-ping´s powers), his abuse of executive orders, his threats against Congress, his sultan with fly-whisk attitudes toward his opposition, and even his vacations, which reek more of third-world trash gamboling on the Riviera than any American leader (George W. Bush settled his mind by clearing brush in Texas, Reagan at his ranch in Santa Barbara. Obama unfortunately finds the brush already cleared in Martha´s Vineyard and Hawaii.)

President Obama has repeatedly suspended parts of the Affordable Care Act without the consent of Congress. The latest unilateral action happened Monday night, when the administration announced another delay of the employer mandate, the law´s provision that businesses with more than 50 employees must provide their employees with insurance starting in 2014 or pay large fines. In July, the president decreed the mandate wouldn´t be enforced at all in 2014, and last night administration officials declared that businesses with 50 to 99 employees wouldn´t be penalized in 2015. Michelle Obama´s lust for luxury has always been a bit of a problem for her husband and Democrats in general. Jetting off to five star resorts with a large entourage has too much dissonance with the rhetoric denouncing inequality currently in favor with the left. But the First Lady has now outdone herself, and because a picture is worth a thousand words, the damage may be a bit more serious than the occasional grumble over designer shoes and livin´ large. After all, millions of Americans are mired in unemployment, underemployment, and hopelessness. So in the face of all this, Michelle
