| “My administration,” President Obama wrote on his first day in office, “is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in government.” Those were strong and hopeful words. Four years later, it is becoming more and more clear that they were just words. On Monday afternoon, open-government advocates assembled in a congressional hearing room to ponder what had become of the Obama administration’s lofty vows of transparency. “It’s been a really tough slog,” said Anne Weismann of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. “The lack of effective leadership in the

Serious question. Re: Obama´s "naughty and nice" comment.
Has there ever been a statement or act by him during the last four years when President Obama did or said anything remotely qualifying as "presidential"?

Liberals continue to be amazed when Obama doesn´t live up to his word. This guy gives smoke and mirrors a bad name.
Poverty, homelessness and the wealth gap have all gotten worse under Obama but instead of him being declared a failure,it gives him a pathway to ask for more porkulus.
Liberals always have and always will have mental scapegoats to explain away their failures.
Liberal historians have brushed away commie infiltrators of the 40´s and 50´s but they´re the birth parents of modern day liberalism

#7, Dana Milbank wouldn´t likely be pleased with your comparing him to Munchkins.
He might prefer the image of Colonel Nicholson from "Bridge on the River Kwai" ... the British officer who delusionally helps the Japanese to build the bridge.
The colonel, when it finally dawns on him what is really going on, utters in stunned shock: "What have I done?"

Mr. Milbank,
The fundamental problem is that liberals wish to control others while conservatives wish to be left alone. In their pursuit of control, liberals will do anything necessary including destroying the very thing they claim to love. Conservatives accept that not all results will be desire able, but also know that the preservation of opportunities is more important than the insurance of equal outcomes. Ultimately, the pursuit of equal outcomes stifles all economic innovation and assures the demise of those who try to assert control over all they survey. Mr. Obama is just the current manifestation of the progressive demigod.

The Obama administration’s high level of opacity...is troubling precisely because the president was so clear about his determination to do things differently. As recently as early last year, some open-government advocates were still hopeful, presenting Obama with an anti-secrecy award at the White House. But even then, there were signs of trouble: The award presentation wasn’t on his schedule and was closed to reporters.
Psst! After 4 years of broken promises and "opacity", you´re just now figuring out that this POTUS and his entire Administration lie through their teeth with zero intentions of keeping any promises they make?
Well, at least Dana is awakening from his diversity-induced slumber, but since he writes "more in pain than in anger", the first move Obama makes to make Dana feel good again will be swallowed without chewing.

FTA: The Obama administration has, to its credit, made progress in a few areas: releasing more of the White House visitor logs, disseminating more information about nuclear weapons, disclosing more about intelligence spending, and declassifying more historical records.
The records of who visited the White House to create Obamacare have not been released nor have the topics listed for their meetings. It also turns out that those small changes made have caused officials to meet outside the White House and use personal E-mail instead of office E-mail. The only real transparency has been with historical documents found that make the Bush administration look bad. And the dissemination of information of nuclear weapons used to be called treason not openness.

The conservative websites (read by conservatives and conservative-haters only) will NOT do the job of educating America on what is going on in our country. I believe that it would be much cheaper to buy local newspapers and TV stations than wait till ALL Americans will find out what the commies/totalitarians mean to our well being. And then again, what might come out of it? Another russia or china, where there are only 2 classes of people: nomenclature bureaucrats and slaves! Now he blames Obama for not living up to his promises. Sorry Dana, the shame is not on Obama. He was just doing what he does – lie – lie about everything. The shame is on you for being gullible and failing to hew to the fundamental duty of the journalist – a healthy skepticism. I´m not convinced the research described is believable with regard to seniors, but it sure does apply to that ´special´ group known as liberals. They routinely fall for any program leftists propose, no matter how outlandish, every time and without reservation. Then when it all goes south they wonder why, but still think it should have worked and just needs to be fixed. You watch, when it finally dawns on these bozos that obamacare cannot possibly work, the libs will not even consider scrapping it. No, they will try to fix it.

Milbank, on the other hand, has a severe "seeing problem" due to a chronic "anal-cranial inversion problem".

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. "The politics has been relentless and that continues," Sebelius said. "There was some hope that once the Supreme Court ruled in July, and then once an election occurred there would be a sense that, ´This is the law of the land, let´s get on board, let´s make this work.´"

President Obama kicked off the week in Connecticut with a rallying cry for new gun control measures hand-in-hand with Sandy Hook parents. This afternoon, Obama sat down in the Oval Office with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel — who, with a military, civilian, and contractor work force on edge about their jobs, is tasked with unveiling what could be a punishing presidential budget for the Pentagon tomorrow. Over at the Senate tonight, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) filed cloture on the motion to proceed to the gun-control package, which means

President Obama will unveil his 2014 spending plan Wednesday, 65 days late and several trillion dollars short, by Republican standards, of effectively reining in the national debt. But the more relevant fact about the White House budget may be the yawning political void into which it is about to fall on Capitol Hill. Administration officials say their plan offers a path to compromise, a centrist course that avoids the extreme spending cuts of the House Republican budget as well as the $1 trillion tax hike endorsed last month by Senate Democrats. The president’s proposal contains the same set of policies

It seems very odd that President Obama has made gun control the signature issue of his second term, so far. He can’t possibly achieve any significant legislation; a few tweaks to the background check system, maybe, but there is no chance of getting any meaningful gun control through the House. The House Democrats aren’t even trying. So it also seems strange that all eyes are on the Senate, where Harry Reid will unveil some sort of gun legislation–no one knows what, exactly–on Thursday. The party’s left-wing base is lining up behind the bill, sight unseen.

In a poll conducted by PoliceOne, a majority of law enforcement personnel said universal background checks, "assault weapons" bans, and "high capacity" magazine bans do not make police safer and will not lower violent crime. Armed citizens, on the other hand, do make a positive difference. In the poll of 15,000 law enforcement professionals, 71% of respondents said an "assault weapons" ban would have zero impact on violent crime. Of those surveyed, 95.7% said the same of a "high capacity" magazine ban, and 79.7% said the same in response to a question on universal background checks.

Margaret Thatcher captured Americans’ hearts and minds in a way few other foreign leaders have done, and much of that was because of the symbiotic relationship she had with President Reagan — a relationship that in many ways mirrored the storied “special” friendship between the two countries. Mrs. Thatcher, who died Monday at age 87, was a tough-talking maverick who was bullish on the promise of the U.S. as a force on the international stage. Those traits appealed to Americans weary of the 1970s malaise and eager to hear reasons to believe in themselves. “She had the perfect balance between

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

Clinton, 33, essentially said "maybe" in an interview that aired Monday on NBC´s Today show. "Right now I´m grateful to live in a city, a state and a country where I strongly support my mayor, my governor, my president and my senators and my representative," said Clinton, whose father, Bill, was president from 1993-2001 and her mother, Hillary

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

On Monday’s broadcast of MSNBC “Morning Joe,” host Joe Scarborough voiced his agreement with Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, who on Sunday’s “Face the Nation” on CBS questioned those Republicans who are threatening a filibuster on pending gun control legislation. Scarborough said such a filibuster would be an example of the GOP putting “rapists’ rights ahead over parents’ rights.” “[I] tell you what, Richard Haass, I saw John McCain there,” Scarborough said. “And I’m hopeful. Because, you know, there are a lot of guys out there in the Senate and they are going out because it’s a free shot.

Margaret Thatcher had more impact on the world than any woman ruler since Catherine the Great of Russia. Not only did she turn around—decisively—the British economy in the 1980s, she also saw her methods copied in more than 50 countries. "Thatcherism" was the most popular and successful way of running a country in the last quarter of the 20th century and into the 21st. Her origins were humble. Born Oct. 13, 1925, she was the daughter of a grocer in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham. Alfred Roberts was no ordinary shopkeeper.
