Questions surround $55 million
program to cut violence in Chicago

CNN, by Scott Zamost & Drew Griffin*

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 12/3/2012 7:00:56 PM

Chicago - On a chilly afternoon this fall, teenagers across Chicago´s South Side were busy at work, earning $8.75 an hour to hand out fliers with a message of non-violence. )Snip) A four-month CNN investigation found that not only did the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative (NRI) pay teens to hand out fliers promoting inner peace, it also paid these at-risk teens to take field trips to museums, march in a parade with the governor, and even attend a yoga class to learn how to handle stress. Earlier this year, state legislators passed a resolution demanding the state conduct an audit on the program.

Comments:
* [w/ Elizabeth Nunez.] So, in the city where murder, 0bama, and Emanuel all share a deadly link, the political answer is to pay off the people to "be good." Also, buried here is where teens were paid "to march in a parade for the governor." Hope it wasn´t one of those recent Occupy Wall Street demonstrations. [It ain't working].

Corrupt? Of course. Imbecilic? For sure.

A few public executions would work wonders pour encourager les autres. Handing out flyers and telling everybody to smile and be friends isn´t going to get the needed attention in the absence of the public executions.

It´s too bad we have come to this point, but come to it we have. Gang violence and other urban criminality can only be stopped by swift, vigorous, brutal and highly public examples of what happens to offenders. That is the way it used to be done and the way it is still done in some parts of the world. Of course there is not the slightest chance in the world that such barbaric measures would ever be adopted in America. Even to suggest such a thing horrifies and disgusts our bien pensant. So the killing and the crime goes on, and corrupt politicians pay to hand out flyers against violence and advocating peace, love and joy to all. There is a moral in this. Civilization does not sustain itself. It is not permanent. It can be lost and the law of the jungle can re-emerge as it has done in the slums of Chicago and other blighted inner cities. The existing judicial and penal system is utterly helpless to deal with a state of anarchy and lawlessness and disrespect for authority such as it encounters in such criminal wastelands. So the killing and thieving and drugging and social disintegration will continue and get worse.

Send Michelle in, she´ll straighten things out in no time. No one would dare to argue against her. She speaks for so many that surely this shouldn´t a challenge. Just pass an executive order and wala, change, hope will automatically make its presence and all will be well. Right?

A bipartisan group of senators says they have reached a compromise extending jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed for five months. If the Senate approves the deal, it would break a months-long stalemate over the issue in the chamber between the two parties. Two leaders of the negotiations -- Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island and Republican Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada -- said in a statement that the deal would be retroactive to the end of last year. Since that time, jobless coverage has expired for roughly 2 million people. The proposal would be paid for by extending some customs fees and changing how some

White House: Hunt for missing

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — Authorities searching for a missing Malaysian airliner may extend the hunt hundreds of miles farther west into the Indian Ocean, a U.S. official said Thursday, as the Malaysian government acknowledged it has made little progress in solving the mystery of the vanished plane. The White House cited unspecified “new information” as the basis for expanding the search. Administration officials later said the new information was that the plane’s engines remained running for approximately four hours after it disappeared from radar early Saturday over the Gulf of Thailand.

A bill is now making its way through Congress addressing the growing controversy in Washington over executive authority. The GOP-led House has backed legislation that would require the president to enforce laws passed by Congress. The White House says Obama would veto it if it hits his desk. Appearing on "America´s Newsroom" Thursday, Sen. Rand Paul explained the importance of giving Congress the legal authority to sue the president. "He seems to be writing his own laws whenever he feels like it. The problem is, we can´t sue him, because we don´t have standing in court. So, the legislation that I've introduced in the Senate

The contradicting accounts of what happened to the plane would be farcical if not for the 239 people who are missing. How did Malaysia get this so wrong? Who exactly is coordinating the release of information about the fate of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370? Nobody, it would seem. It depends which source you listen to—the government officials, the airline, or the Malaysian military. For there to be such imprecision in the information and so many contradictions between sources four days into a search would be farcical were it not for the tragedy unfolding and the distress being caused. Malaysia Flight: ´No

Communications satellites picked up a faint ´electronic ping´ from the missing Malaysian aircraft after contact was lost according to a source close to the investigation. The signal was an indication the aircraft´s troubleshooting systems were ready to communicate with satellites if required, but no data was sent because Malaysia Airlines had not subscribed to the full troubleshooting service, the source said. International airlines use a reporting system which collects technical data during each flight so that engineers can identify problems. These reports are broadcast to engineers via VHF radio or satellite during the flight.

Malaysia - Malaysia said today that satellite images of suspected debris from a missing jet were yet another false lead, and debunked a report the plane had flown on for hours after losing contact – leaving the nearly week-old mystery no closer to being solved. China had sparked talk of a breakthrough in the riddle of the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) jet with satellite images of three large floating objects near where flight 370 with 239 people on board lost contact on Saturday, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. But Vietnamese and Malaysian planes that searched the area in the South China Sea today found no sign of wreckage of the

Washington - A street prostitute in Dallas may make as little as $5 per sex act. But pimps can take in $33,000 a week in Atlanta, where the sex business brings in an estimated $290 million per year. It is not nearly as lucrative in Denver, where prostitution and other elements of an underground trade are worth about $40 million. Those are some of the findings of a landmark government-sponsored report on the size and structure of the sex economy, including massage parlors, brothels and expensive escort services. The study also found that four in five pimps elect not to deal drugs and that little money trades hands in the child pornography business.

In contrast to public assertions that it supports the committee’s work, the White House has ignored or rejected offers in multiple meetings and in letters to find ways for the committee to review the records, a McClatchy investigation has found. The significance of the materials couldn’t be learned.
